The project I'm working on are all the sets of the Shining.
And lately started to reconstruct the Elstree Studios around 1980 from old photos and videos.
At the same time trying to fit the already existing sets into the stages, workshops and offices.

Smaller projects include the AIC briefing room in Sicario and the barracks in Full Metal Jacket.

Working on, but not yet published, Bill and Alice's impossible bedroom in Eyes Wide Shut.
In addition, the drawings by Jörg Müller - The Changing City to be built in 3D.

    I think the many Exit signs in The Shining are referencing the right-to-die/assisted suicide organisation that began in Scotland in 1980 of the same name. Although it formally began in the same year The Shining was released, it had been around for a long time prior to that. Suicide is effectively one of the themes of the movie since Jack Torrance is drinking himself to death and Grady took his own life. Many of the exit doors clearly lead nowhere and there may even be significance regarding whether the characters come in or go out under the Exit signs as it relates to the story.

    I already talked about the two panels ripped off the door of The Shining, and in Doctor Sleep movie, there is only one. I saw a video of the film's production, and it shows the set with the two panels missing. I don't know why they changed that. But in the universe of The Shining/Doctor Sleep, does the Overlook Hotel distort things and elements of the past? For exemple, the 'redrum' broken door has changed, the entrance to room 237 is different, the 1921 Ball plays music from the 1930s, etc.

  • @deltabuilder
    @deltabuilder8 күн бұрын

    Mike Flanagan may have recorded two versions with the door, where Ewan McGregor looks through the hole in the door. He probably chose this version because it most resembles the famous shot with Jack Nicholson. I don't know if the Overlook universe twists things, but I noticed the entrance to Room 237 right away. Why Mike Flanagan had it built this way is beyond me. The spaces in the Boiler room also don't seem quite right. Mike Flanagan could easily have measured the original space in the Enigma building at Elstree Studios. The building is still there.

    Hello deltabuilder. I was thinking about theories about The Shining. I think a lot about two theories: The Wendy Theory, that the climax of the film was Wendy's hallucinations and she dragged Jack into the maze and ran away with Danny. And the other theory more disturbing than the abuse theory: Jack strangled and abused Danny on Monday chapter and that the bear symbolizes Jack. I don't believe these theories. What do you think of them?

  • @deltabuilder
    @deltabuilder29 күн бұрын

    Well, I'm more of an analyst of spaces and architecture and not into story analysis. Although I have had to analyze plays in the past in preparation for directing. I start from the story itself, in this case the film and not the book. What is not seen or said in the film may not have happened. In any case, we don't know and it is therefore speculation. But, just to drop a theory about the story... It is very well possible that Jack abused Danny, because the first clue is the story about Jack that Wendy tells the doctor, confirmed by Jack with Lloyd. The second clue is when Danny goes to the bedroom where Jack is sitting on the bed. He asks Danny to sit on his lap. This is a very tense scene, where you expect Jack might abuse Danny. The third clue, of course, is when Danny enters the Colorado Lounge with a torn sweater and abrasions on his neck just after this scene.

    I think that all three of them went crazy because of traumas and/or what they did. I think they are in sanatorium and not in The Overlook Hotel. Remember the green corridor? Totally like hospital. And remember when Wendy sees Jack's "novel" conisting only of thousands same sentences? She is terrified not only because she realizes Jack is crazy but because she realizes all three of them are crazy. I think they are letting some gasses through vents to make the three of them hallucinate and examine their behavious. I mean, The Overlook hotel is spatially impossible, most rooms, many windows... I wonder if this is why the set burned down

  • @deltabuilder
    @deltabuilderАй бұрын

    I have a theory about it. There is a story about the actor (Norman Gay) who, with blood on his head, encounters Wendy during her flight. This actor is only seen in 1 scene and not on the set of the Colorado Lounge, but on the set of the Lobby. During the fire he sought shelter with the crew because paramedics wanted to take him away. This means that the Colorado Lounge set was not used. So the heat from the lamps was not the cause that day. I think the cause was an ordinary electrical short circuit. I personally experienced it in a theater where an electrical connection had become too hot for weeks without anyone noticing. Everything worked without any problems.

  • @mesapysch
    @mesapyschАй бұрын

    Agreed. I used to work with 4000 watt Mole-Richardson lights. Any plastic near the front would melt immediately. Then between the Lobby and the kitchen the stairwell of the Caretaker's apartment. In this version the double door would be one floor too high. Hi Herman, no kitchen in the apartment. The apartment consists of Danny's bedroom, the hall, the living room, Jack and Wendy's bedroom and the bathroom. there is nothing more. What is strange, and has been noted by many analysts, is that there are windows on two sides of the apartment; the long side, which borders all rooms and the famous bathroom window. Only the bathroom window can be seen from the outside and the other windows should be on the inside of the hotel. I haven't made a video of the apartment yet. It's a good idea to follow Wendy's route when she delivers breakfast. There are many color differences throughout the film. Jack's jacket also changes color during the interview. The tennis ball and the gray service hall are also examples. I suspect that the use of different cameras, lenses and film stock is the cause of this. What surprises me is that when transferring film to DVD, Bluray and 4K versions, no attempt was made to correct the color differences. But perhaps they thought it was too much of an infringement on Stanley Kubrick's vision. I also think it's a shame that they didn't perform a stabilization correction on the tripod shots during the interview scene. It is clear that sometimes the image floats due to sprocket instability. This can easily be corrected digitally

    Wendy in the boiler room (from 1:07 onwards), and then going upstairs to 'the kitchen’, was shot in a completely separate building, away from Stage 3 (Colorado Lounge), namely in the Art/Drapes department (now called the Enigma Building). The ‘kitchen’ is what later became Vivian’s cutting room in 1980, next door to the room that Stanley used for completing the cutting of The Shining in the spring of 1980 - so that we called the building at the time ‘Stanley’s cutting-room block’.

    Thanks for the explanation, Gordon! Jun'ichi Yaoi's documentary was also a great help.

    Hi deltabuilder. Was Jack Torrance a good man or was already mean to his family before the Overlook Hotel?

  • @deltabuilder
    @deltabuilder3 ай бұрын

    That's difficult to say. I have had to analyze stage plays in the past to better understand the background of the characters. In Jack's case, the most is revealed during Wendy's conversation with the doctor. It turns out that alcohol and Danny's abuse gives an idea of what Jack is like.

    Question - when people say the Gold Room could not fit inside the hotel we see in early part of the film, do you agree? The only thing I wonder about is why there are no windows?

  • @deltabuilder
    @deltabuilder3 ай бұрын

    Answer - The Goldroom set measures 43.78 x 24.68 meters and is 9.20 meters high (without the Red Bathroom). The Timberline Lodge is approximately 126 meters long, but is a narrow building with several kinks. The building is nowhere wider than 12 meters, so the Goldroom set would not fit anywhere. The window problem is simple; Not only the Goldroom set was built on Stage 5, but also the Boulder set. Given the dimensions of Stage 5, there will have been no room left for lighting to illuminate windows from the outside, such as with the Lobby set or the Colorado Lounge set.

    I love that psychedelic poster in the little room in the movie. It looks like one would have to walk through that little room to get to Ullman's office? I thought the radio was in Ullman's office!

    Yes, it is a special poster. Never found that poster on the internet. It would be a poster of the basketball player Julius Erving. If you go through this door you will arrive at the office of accountant Henry Callahan. You can see this office when Danny rides through the Green Service Hall on his trike.

    I put a little bathroom for the receptionist back there on mine. Sims are devastated when they wet themselves.

    Its really coming along. I may post some stills from the "set" soon. You have really inspired me. This is getting to be an obsession. I want to do a separate video about all the hotels Stanley picked and why. I am so obsessed. At first this was just a little fun project. But now I see this is a science! Sooooooooooooo much to study! What a can of worms I opened. I am now trying to get simulated art that matches the real art as close as possible, lol. The story is finished pretty much. So far it looks like it will be about a half hour long at least!

    Hi deltabuilder. Today I saw photos of a deleted scene from The Shining. The deleted scene from the film is based of the Stephen King's book. Wendy sees balloons in the lobby elevator and she calls Jack. Jack checks the elevator but tells her it's normal and tells her she's imagining things.

    Thank you very much Neusa Maria! I had never seen these photos. They also seem to me to have been put on the internet very recently. Thanks for the tip! Maybe I can customize the sets with new points of view and details.
