I read an article, aging is the accumulation of small defects until some critical system fails.

Being 70, lifelong learning, understanding, observation, experience and re-examination 24/7 365. The biggest problem I have with the comment 'we, the people' is that those who are the creators of these 'cults' (for want of a better word) are not alien to that same description 'we, the people'. They are people and are either themselves deluded, and are spreading the delusion through their own collective ignorance, or deliberately setting out to create other proto civilisations that as our own recent history shows, can and does end in either total collapse from the inside or lead to total destruction of the cult and its followers by much more powerful external forces. I will say this, it is easier now, to indoctrinate innocently ignorant collectives since the more powerful platforms of media have become increasingly integral to a vast majority of the present collective of innocently ignorant conscious cognosentient beings on a global scale. Over the past 30 years I have witnessed such phenomena evolve a diaspora of apathetic collectives into jibbering mobs of raging maniacs who would aplaud something so ridiculous when the order went viral that before the birth of social media the thought of such an order would have been treated as preposterous at best. Psychological inducement by social media alone is as easy as believing that there exists an invisible white bearded almighty powerful being that created everything in six days, then went to the pub to turn wine into water. That last bit was made up by the Vatican.

Hmpf, I think Curtis' conclusions have been long dismissed. Even Eileen Barker, whom Curtis appears to parrot, appears to have walked-back her dismissal of Brainwashing.

(3:07) "Instead of creating a few throoughul worked-over pieces, the aesthlete produces a constant stream of work and social media to ride atop the wave of viewers' newsfeeds... The tacit agreement between the aesthelete and the viewer is to be mutually indifferent towards quality -- understood as slick production value -- over fine craft. For aesthelete, the point of their work is not only what it expresses but the speed at which it is expressed."

I have long been an admirer of Adam Curtis. I’ve watched many of his documentaries over the decades and relied upon his ability as a researcher. Occasionally, my own research has led me to different conclusions, but I was genuinely shocked by the many errors of fact in this talk about 'New Religious Movements', in particular his bizarre statement that the only harm caused by these groups has come about when members were kidnapped and deprogrammed. I’ve communicated with more than a thousand members and former members of New Religious Movements that are actually authoritarian cults - only a handful of whom were kidnapped or deprogrammed, however, hundreds of them have described the harm caused to them by such groups. That harm has included physical damage, substantial monetary loss and the destruction of relationships. I’m going to give my objections and point to the blatant errors in his talk. The important point - which I’ve made frequently over the years - is that we should always check facts and never believe that any one source will be completely accurate. Even the most objective researcher can fall victim to their beliefs. Adam Curtis managed to convince himself that it was unnecessary to research his beliefs. He was wrong. You can find many examples of harm on my You Tube channel through interviews with former members of Scientology and groups such as NXIVM (where female followers were branded), New Kadampa Tradition, the Jehovah's Witnesses. To see such a fine researcher gulled into credulous beliefs is nothing short of gobsmacking. This video has been up for ten years. Time he apologised and did proper research.

I also find his conclusion "memories can't be implanted therefore brainwashing doesn't exist" problematic. Like vulnerable people can't get their worldview, their behaviors and believes turned upside down after being exposed to a group environment where all kinds of manipulation techniques are systematically employed.

YOu are obviously right with regard to Harm. Just anecdotally we come across numerous moments in recent history where damage has been inflicted on willing participants in cults. Yet despite the various techniques of manipulation presented in such groups there is no evidence of 'Brain Washing' as anything more than a generalized notion of convincing someone to accept a different method of perceiving things. If it could be shown to exist there should be some scientific means of measuring it.
