Would like to see it in real life, since this is how big titanic would look, pretty similar size, heightwise and width, but ss united states is only little bit longer and 15% more gross tonnage.

Only way to get funds for restoration is to open it up to the public via disclaimer for exploration. Picture stands with write ups explaining each area and how it used to look would feed people imaginations along with tour guides would make the ship a great day out. With good marketing this ship could be able to pay for its own eventual restoration and visitors will come back over time to see the restoration progress so its not a one time visit. Market it right and she'll pull the crowds in.

How is it truly abandoned, if there's a whole (sham) conservancy taking countless dollars to keep it from going to the breakers, for some unknown reason?

It's January 2024 and I'll bet that it's still tied up at the dock in Philadelphia. Sorry but tow it out to sea and give her a decent ending. Rusting at a dock is no way for a grand lady. Sitting decaying is sad.

It's sad that this once great nation couldn't even take care of this ship, they could of made it into a museum / Hotel and rented out the room. I guess they could always use it right now the way it sits for all the illegal immigrants our Dumb President Biden has allowed into our Nation.

I came all the way to Philli to see this beautiful ship. I stood at the gate and cried, it is so amazing and such a history to be left to sit. You would think with all the money in the world, this ship would be preserved or at least be used as a floating museum. I agree with Ms. Gibbs, I would sink it to before seeing my family's legacy stripped apart. People pass by it every day; we should all support this cause because it is the last. I hope on my next visit I can run into to someone that would allow me a closer look. I'm sure there are more people that would love to tour.

If the ship weren't gutted, bringing it back as a relic of the 1950s (sort of a version of a classic Cadillac with tail fins or a 1950's TV show like I Love Lucy) might work. But the Queen Elizabeth 2 in Dubai since 2008 as a relic of the 1970s & the Queen Mary in Calif since 1971 as a relic of the 1930s have had a mixed record of profit & loss. When the SSUS in the 1990s was taken to Ukraine for asbestos removal, that sealed its fate. Don't know what the ship's inspection reports showed before then, but if material made of asbestos is kept intact, it isn't necessarily a health hazard. Building supplies that contained asbestos were used during the renovation of the QM in the early 1970s, so the SSUS's interior may not have needed to be stripped bare.

I've seen her in person I hope restoration for her does happen. We don't have too many ocean liners left and we have even fewer large ones and even less of the notable ones. This ship made history and its held its record longer than any other liner. Its deserving of a restoration it deserves its second chance at the fame and glory it once had. I hope to one day visit her again in a much better state.

Once powerful and an image of speed and progress, now sits abbandoned by those who claim to treasure it. Everything that isn't bolted down taken away and sold. The structure that keeps it all afloat slowly being corroded. It will not be a huge breach that does her in, like many of her type through history. But the slow and sure ingress seeping through unnatended gaps and joints. What a sad end for an once great nation. The ship? Yeah, also sad it's in this state.

I think it's an absolute disgrace that this ship was allowed to fall into such a sorry state of disrepair, and decay. We need to do better at preserving our historical landmarks. I would love to have visited this ship when it was still in one piece. The conservancy needs to find a way to get back as many of the artifacts which were gutted from this ship as humanly possible, and return them to their original locations and conditions within the ship. Absolutely disgraceful.

I was watching this video, saw the plaque that it was designed by Gibbs & Cox, and thought "that name sounds really familiar". My father started his career as a naval architect, and I know he had worked on the USS Allen M Sumpter (he designed the gun turrets and part of the bridge). My husband and I immediately started searching online, and sure enough - Gibbs & Cox was the design firm for the USS Sumpter too! Small world. (My father would be in tears, if he saw the condition the US United States is currently in.)

The ship should have been scrapped long ago Battle ships with rich history have a hard time getting funding to stay afloat as it is An ocean liner couldn’t possibly hope to survive unless it was returned to service and took good money to ferry people along from Europe and USA And even then it would probably be cheaper to build a clone of it than to restore this hunk of rust
