I always wanted to try out Onimusha on the PS2, but never did. Don't even know why, too many great games in the PS2 era.

Absolutely banger video. Man, I genuinely remembered LOVING Onimusha 2 but when you started going over the back half of the game I suddenly remembered how jarring an experience that was. Also, I never played Dawn of Dreams cause I felt like 3 had been pretty conclusive, but I feel like I kind of slept on a solid game, which is a shame. Great job as always man, always look forward to your content and definitely good luck with your current battle

In case someone doesn't know. Mamoru Samuragochi turned out to be a fraud who had an ghostwriter compose his music. This is why Samanosuke's theme was changed in the newer release.

It's kinda funny: I remember finding Onimusha - Dawn of Dreams challenging, but not that hard. I do not know why as I remember that I did complete it on the "normal" difficulty. It wasn't easy. But I did manage to defeat all the bosses and complete the game with not too much trouble. I do remember that I did indeed lose to the bosses in the final chapter several times and wanted to rage quit at the time. But I liked the game too much to rage quit and just stopped playing and started again the next day, and that day I had beaten them all (and most not even with the same strategies that you explained). I remember cheering so loudly when I did it, that my mom heard me from upstairs and I was so happy that I was able to beat it that I cried. But then again, that was me when I was still 17 years old, I wonder if I would be able to beat the game nowadays while I have more the doubled my age since back then. xD lol But anyway: I really loved the game and it made me want more of the games (even if unfortunately that Onimusha game was the only one released in my country and I could not find any of the other ones in the toy stores and gaming stores at the time....)

Onimusha 3 was probably the favourite game of my youth. To this day, beating that final boss rush with no healing items is my crowning video gaming achievement. Beat the first boss and used it all up, not realising what was to come, was taken out by the next one and sent back to the start. I don't know if i was just a dumb kid, but wasn't able to get more healing items, so just continued through. Still the only Onimusha game I managed to beat!

Very interesting. I never really knew the deep history behind this franchise or the games themselves but now, I know all there is to know about Onimusha. I'm not sure what you will tackle next. I understand you still have an ongoing battle of your own to deal with but I would love to see another Capcom franchise deeply examined. Resident evil for example, now I understand that's a beast in itself but hey, you never know. Could just do it on the side while focusing on smaller retrospectives.

PSA for everyone who still wants to play Dawn of Dreams but scared of the difficulty: the Japanese version included the English text and dub! Just go get that instead and have a good time! How to change the language: go to Options by using the Circle button, and change the first two options once

I really just love the way you talk about the real life story of every game and what things were going on in the gaming industry at that time, it really provides some additional interest for people (like me) who really don't know anything about the games you're covering Really i tend to almost zone out a bit when it comes to the actual reviews depending on the game ofcourse, but it's allways extremely fun hearing about the history behind the games

I love Onimucha and while its combat is good, it doesn't hold a candle to Devil May Cry's. It wasn't nearly as unique.

So, onimusha 2's back half. It sounds a lit like its been hit by the cinematic hammer. In tgat it works like a movie - a japanese movie specifically - where after a poibt its jyst all action and mininal plot until the ending. Not great for a video game, but when you look at it from a japanese action movie perspective, it's understandable.

I've tried to olay onimisha tactics like 4 times in my life, it sucks so bad, the dev team had NO idea how to make a good TRPG when it could have been a great TRPG.

I think a frequent drawback of the long video essay format is losing track of the point of the whole thing, but the narrative you lead the viewer through feels remarkably coherent, despite the twists and turns and "sub-plots" of the various games described within the context of the development and reception of each release. Given my own prior biases, I was unsurprised to see you lay some blame for the franchise's failure at the feet of Inafune himself, and the structure of the video doesn't make that seem like a complete left-field twist at all. Great video!

2:35:35 I haven't checked, but I'm really sure that LOD (Level of Detail) rendering was not invented for this game. Usually developers will have to make their own LOD to fit the game's needs, and it's definitely impressive to work big battles like this into the game - but super Mario 64, one of the first 3d platformers, also had LOD models for Mario, for when the camera was far away.

So glad that you got this out! Onimusha is a series I really wanted to flourish. I had only played and beaten the first and third, but I loved them both dearly. The sections in three where you played as Jean Reno's partner were a real highlight for me. Blasting genma with a high powered rifle was so satisfying after all the complicated swordplay. I rented the Smash clone but only played enough to unlock Mega Man (if you can't tell, I'm a big fan). The Netflix show was also pretty good, I thought.

The Duane Incident Report segment made me wonder if you read the manual before playing, because I never encountered such an issue in the game. I also remember having a spread of weapons for different enemies, and knowing it was necessary.

Your note @3:00 should say when you choose to be too cheap or lazy to find or hire a speaker of the other language who can help you get the pronunciation correct. You definitely can have access and aren’t doing your best, you just are doing the little you feel like doing.

@@IFinishedAVideoGame I don’t know what you mean by that, but it is better to not address something than to lie and say “I have genuinely done my best” when you did absolutely nothing. You could have found and employed someone who speaks Japanese and English to help you with pronunciation, if you were concerned by it at all but you clearly were not but just wanted to pretend you were at the start of your video.

Another brilliant video 🥳 Onimusha is a game i picked up ages ago that i never beat it but fell in love with. This video brought me closure and now i want to experience the whole series myself lmao. P.s Dont sweat the videos taking a bit longer (easier said than done), just focus on getting better. I think I speak for everyone when I say we do not mind waiting for your videos and think your health is priority #1. Feel better brother!

Feel like I woke up in a different universe when you talk about the difficulty of dawn of dreams. I never had to grind to beat it and it certainly wasn't as hard as it's contemporaries. Granted I finish the dark realm before going into the end sequence, but I wouldn't call that mandatory grinding as opposed to just doing all the content.

I had no idea just how influential this series of games was, considering I'd barely heard of it. It looks like I probably would've loved the 3rd one if I'd had the chance to play it. It's a real shame now that they didn't get the attention they deserve even with the strange development they had. An extra tinge of sadness when learning of your cancer diagnosis, I'm hoping that further treatment will prove successful! I've watched all your videos, your work is very high quality and I wish you all the best!
