The Video Games that made me love Video Games

Ойындар

The world can be a cold and cruel place, so sometimes it's nice to just talk about the things you love isn't it?
Here I'm simply going to talk about five of my favourite games of all time. No big analysis or critique - just gushing praise about some games that I love.
Don't even try telling me any of these are rubbish - I won't hear a word of it!

Pathologic 2 is the most miserable thing ever created - and I mean that lovingly. The devs had an exactly perfect vision and executed it more masterfully than anything else I've ever played. Playing it is the most frustrating and confusing experience I've had in games, but I'm amazed to this day by its meticulously crafted experience.

I also really enjoy hearing people going on about things they love. Thanks for sharing! Your enthusiasm is palpable, just like in your retrospectives. I've been meaning to play Chrono Trigger for ages, so I'll take your advice soon. Something interesting to me is that of my top 5 favorite games--Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Medal of Honor, Hollow Knight, Ocarina of Time, and Metal Gear Solid 2--I played 3 of them for the first time in the past year! Ocarina of Time felt timeless playing it in 2022, and I honestly have no idea how playing stealth games will go ever again after playing the MGS games this year. Hollow Knight introduced me to Metroidvanias, which introduced me to Symphony of the Night and your first video... While I've only played them recently, I can easily rank those games next to my favorite 3D platformer (Crash) and favorite FPS (MoH). Keep up the great content!

Of these games, I've only played Planescape Torment. I thought it was pretty cool, but I never ended up finishing it. Planescape torment had a profound impact on my preconceived notion regarding good writing in games, before that I'd only played Disco elysium and considered it to be one of the best CRPG ever made but after going through planescape I realized that although both are different, planescape is the greater predecessor against Disco elysium. If planescape hadn't existed the world may not have seen disco. If only there are games with writing and story as good as it, I want to play games that are more personal in their stories like the one about the nameless one. There are too many games that ask you to save the world in the end, with your friends and girlfriend by your side, space adventures or revenge tales that end with you never facing the brunt of justice or not empathizing to the pain your character feels when receiving such punishment. There is an innate pain that should be addressed in every character, their highest and lowest moments felt, their raison d'etre felt even if there is none. Set out to do that one task and don't fail, that's what planescape did perfectly.

Absolutely agree with you 100%. Along with Silent Hill 2, I think it is the most profound experience I've ever had while playing a video game. I'm considering putting together a really in-depth look at the game as I don't believe anyone's ever done one that tries to tie together the game's fantastic nuances.

  • @Somebody374-bv8cd

Planescape torment is incredible. Out of all the black isle/bioware infinity engine titles, it was the only one I actually completed it in its entirety when I first got it (I did eventually go back to finish BG1 and BG2 - including expansions - years later, which were great games in their own right, as well as icewind dale) because the story, the player character and the world was so captivating and unique, and the party members you get were so memorable and unique. I don't think any game I've played actually came as close to it ever since in terms of the narrative - not even its spiritual successor, torment: tides of numenera

I find it fascinating how there's a generation, several in fact, who state they came to love gaming through obtuse yer rewarding difficulty through the Souls games. I garnered satisfaction in a similar regard through Hidden & Dangerous 1 & 2 and the OG Commandos games on PC.

I'm not sure what generation you think I am? I played both Commandos and Beyond the call of duty when they released and they're a completely different type of challenge to the souls games. 100% agree with you on Bloodborne. One thing that I adore about it is the insight system. The way some enemies change and some become visible after you gain insight is so cool. There are not many games that use the medium to their full potential but Bloodborne is one of them. You wouldn't be able to do an insight system in a book, movie or show. It's only possible in gaming. Same goes for Nier: Automata :)

I like these games you mentioned except for one. Chrono Trigger is a game I love. Like you, i emulated it at 13 years old. I went through a “rebellious” phase with games where I told myself the new games weren’t able to capture the same “game” feel. It’s true, but to think modern games couldn’t create anything interesting was silly. Chrono sucked me in and never let me go until I finished it. I never replayed it as I was going through a deep catalogue of classics. Legendary addition to any top games list.

I think I never really left that phase and will always have a particularly large love for the pre-HD era.

The 5 games that really impacted my life as a gamer: 1. Starcraft Broodwar. It got me into competitive RTS, I've also made real life friends on a forum back in the day. And they're still my friends. No other game did that for me. 2. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (and all other DLC): The best game design I've ever seen. Just so well thought out. All the systems interact in a meaningful way. Endless fun. 3. Assetto Corsa: Get a wheel and a VR headset. Sit down, start AC and prepare for your mind to be blown. If you're into cars this is peak gaming. 4. The Witcher 3: The first game that showed my what "next gen" is about. Immersive and just so incredibly detailed. Memorable characters, great voice acting, fantastic side quests. 5. Commander Keen 4: The first real game I got back in the 90s. I got instantly hooked. And it's still a really good platformer today. Close but no cigar: Thief 1, Mafia 1, Microprose F1 Grand Prix, Might and Magic 3: Isles of Terra, Pathologic 1/2, Skyrim (espcially with hundreds of mods)

I really struggle to pick my favourite games simply because I haven't played too many. I'd say the most important ones for me are AC Black Flag, Destiny 2, Far Cry 5 (I'd say 6 but I haven't finished it yet), fallout New Vegas, and this wonderful little point and click games called Machinarium. I know most of them are pretty mainstream, but they really helped me get into video games. There's other ones that did help (things like overwatch, Star Wars BF 2, and Jedi fallen order), but they're not quite as influencial. Unfortunately I just don't have that much time or money, so I really struggle to get into gaming, or even keep up with it. As a result most of the games I do have I haven't finished, even New Vegas, and the live service ones I've basically abandoned because it got too much, especially D2. Which is a shame because I do love gaming, and channels like yours only help make that love greater. Learning about games that I'll probably never play makes me realise haw vast of an industry it is and how every aspect of creativity can be incorporated into it.

Oh man I have to say I also absolutely love Machinarium! I got it from the humble bundle about a decade ago when it used to be donation based and just loved everything about it! I've always been fascinated with point and click games and the art and aesthetic of that game is just great! I still listen to the soundtrack all the time! Also my dude I would absolutely say that there is nothing wrong at all with just engaging with the medium through videos! There are some games that I feel like I know intimately because of the sort of second hand experience I get through a long essay! I own a copy of Tokimeki Memorial which is in Japanese, which I cannot speak, solely because I watched the Action Button six hour review of it and the video had a profound effect on me! So yeah enjoy it however you want - even if that means not even playing them! That's totally cool!

Excellent call on Golden Sun, a real masterpiece! If you like that, I would highly recommend Shining Force 3 on the Saturn. It was Camelot's magnum opus that they worked on right before Golden Sun. Split into 3 games; "scenarios" with a fourth bonus game after that. You carry over your save data just like GS from game to game, and all of the characters come together at the end, again just like in GS. I think it's the best SRPG ever, just a phenomenal experience!

  • @atmatey

    @atmatey

    Жыл бұрын

@@IFinishedAVideoGame I agree that they are somewhat underrated. The one thing that could be improved on would be the normal random battles; they are often pretty trivial and often disrupt the puzzle solving. That is a pretty common problem in JRPGs though. Otherwise the visuals, story, music, Djinn system, psynergy, weapons and dungeons are all really good. The battle system also really shines in boss fights. I often think what a 3D Golden Sun game could be like if proper love and thought was given to it. The Lighthouses and dungeons could take inspiration from 3D Zelda (but still keep it distinctly Golden Sun with psynergy and Djinn). The battle system could maybe take some inspiration from Final Fantasy XIII in the sense that it is skill-based and dynamic, but emphasizes co-operation within party members and djinn usage. I think the game could lose some of the JRPG elements, for instance it could be interesting if the player is not allowed to grind, so that the challenge remains high and easier to keep consistent. Golden Sun is a very special series for me and it shouldn't be afraid to question conventions and innovate in areas where it is needed. Sadly I don't think this will ever happen since Nintendo doesn't really have any interest in the series anymore, but maybe a similar sort of game inspired by Golden Sun will emerge one day.

God Of War hit at the right time for me since the game dealt with fatherhood so much and I had just had a daughter when I played the game. BOTW I wish I could remove from my mind and experience again. Such an amazing world that game has. The Witcher 3 is flawed but I spent months with that game. When I finally finished the game I almost felt empty inside after having to say goodbye to that story. Oblivion is flawed but my nostalgia keeps it beautiful in my mind. Before some spoilers for planescape torment: Check out Tunic if you haven't already. I'm an old videogame veteran and I love non-standard games that can surprise me. Tunic was one that initially looked by the numbers, but the more i played the more often it threw my expectations over again and again. Ohter games that really did it for me were Papers Please, Return of the Obra Dinn, Outer Wilds, Hollow Knight, Factorio, Undertale and Into the Breach. Wether it was gameplay or story, these are some of my favorite games of all time. SPOILERS FOR PLANESCAPE You said the game has answers for all the questions you might have about the nameless one, but that is not entirely true. Iirc it is never explicitly stated what heinous crime against existence he committed. I think the going theory is that he was the one to start the endless war in the hells, but there is no clear event given what he is trying to atone for.

Never played any of these games. I confess I don't get the appeal of hard games and extremely long games. Guess I'm too old for this 😅 Cool video anyway, it's cool to see other people talk about their passion

It's really because it adds a journey aspect (either overcoming the game or finally seeing the end) that's separate from the game itself. I've always been a fan of super long things (give me some prog rock and Stephen king anyday) so it suits me perfectly!

An absolute classic of the genre and easily the best handheld JRPG of all time imo!

I accidentally skipped from this video to your IJ video and was REALLY CONFUSED!! I was sat here thinking “I know you love Indiana Jones, but I could SWEAR I heard some Earthbound music at some point!! MOVE ON!!!” 。・゚・(ノ∀`)・゚・。

Celeste is definitely my favourite game of all time, and I don't even like platformers all that much.

I really need to check it out. I love a good platformer and I've heard Celeste is one of the best modern ones ever made!
