I work at a big tech company. I’m fully remote, but not allowed to travel outside the country. This same method should allow me to connect to my home network so I can be in London for example but my work laptop would be showing im still home in the states right?

What a great video. Thank you for all the information and the step-by-step instructions. So if I did, this, and I used my travel router in, for example, Mexico, would my Internet traffic from Mexico appear as if I’m actually back home in the US? Also, do I have to use the GLI net brand of router at home, or can I use my existing Netgear for the VPN server part?

Great video. I've got a GL.iNet Slate Plus which connects back to my Unifi Dream Machine Pro. I take this with me whenever staying away, and therefore get to connect to the internet securely from my home IP address wherever I am in the world. 🙂

European here - I'm using one UAP-Lite and it can't even reach to next room. Need to mention 55cm brickwall so... At least two if not three will be needed for single apartment.

Thx for this video, UCG-Ultra & U6+ are on the way. I'll wait for the switch, the one I'm using works fine (plus I need link aggregation and don't find if Unifi switches has it)

Hello, I followed all the instructions (which were terrific) for my GL AX-1800 Slate 1 and the GL-A1300 Slate Plus (travel router). I'm using Wireguard and have green lights on both sides, yet, on the travel router I have no internet while on the VPN. Upon disabling the VPN on the travel router I have interent. Any guidance appreciated. Tx.

The mine needs glass fiber and decent power, period. Perhaps in town I would use fiber to interconnect the different houses. Not sure how Brent feels about cables, but if you want a stable and fast network, use cables!! But yeah, a lot more work, and probably a lot more expensive.

I live in Chicago, where a lot of brick homes have been expanded, often leaving masonry that used to be the exterior walls hidden inside interior walls. These create rooms, and sometimes whole sections of the house, that are wi-fi dead spots. The best way to fully cover such houses is to have my low-voltage subcontractor pull Ethernet cables from wherever the Internet service comes in (which is usually also where any other network equipment is) to the additions on the wrong side of the hidden masonry and install access points there. In such cases, it can take 3 or more access points for full coverage. Unfortunately, this can get quite expensive, which is why whenever I pass by one of these build-outs in progress, I'll try to find out who the owner is and plant a bug in his ear about having Ethernet cable run during the construction, when it's much cheaper to do so. It's amazing to me that even after years of proliferation of home networking, it's still an afterthought to architects, interior designers and contractors. For the budget-constrained, I will try a TP-Link Deco PX50 kit, which can connect an access point on the wrong side of the hidden masonry using powerline networking. I've had good results with that, but it may not work if the electrical wiring isn't up to snuff, if the electrical system is divided across multiple breaker panels or if the house has multiple electrical feeds from the utility pole. A UniFi solution is always preferable if the client is willing to pay for it.

One small correction about multi-gigabit gateways. Their ports may be 2.5 gigabit, the connection back to the cpu is still limited to 1 Gbps.

Great Idea to use Flint to provide Wireguard server. I have a problem in that my internet provider also provides my TV service and that means the primary router is theirs, and my flint is a secondary router that provides my original "old network ID 192.168.2.0". So how do I set up my DDS go thru to my secondary flint router. Doug

Great video! I just subscribed. Question for you. We are early in the build building a 2 story stretched out 6000 sq ft house. I want to use the ceiling mounted APs. My question is whether they radiate up or only down (or if power radiating up is significantly less). I’ve assumed they radiate mainly down, so I’m thinking of 3 on the top floor and two on the lower floor. If they are omnidirectional then I probably don’t need three on the top floor. Thanks!

the 2.5g port on my UDM-SE died recently, managed to get it RMA'd but even on a replacement it's very unreliable when there's high bandwidth utilisation, it'll literally just drop out at times. I've had to opt for an SFP RJ45 Transceiver just to mitigate this issue. If I recall correctly the ethernet controller used is a Realtek 8125 which is notorious for being unreliable. Hope it's different in this model.

I got annoyed about the ISP "quality" router that wasnt able to handle all the clients (ca 20 that is not massive considering IoT and a family where everyone has phone and comp) so 1st thing I tried was EOL enterprise firewall that makes my home network now. Then I got annoyed about the wifi coverage and got 2 U6+ APs to mesh the house and yard around it. At first planned to use them as a standalone but then found that its possible to add unify controller to my NAS via docker. Next steps are at some point to retire the FW and get the unify gateway and preferably switch to separate IoT network from general network.

I currently have a UDM (so the one before the UDR) and just got upgraded to 10Gbps (thank you, Sonic!) which puts me in an interesting place. I don’t want the form factor of a UDMPro or UDM SE (I am in a small apartment, I can’t fit a rack) but both the UX and the UCGUltra are capped at 1Gbps, which means I don’t gain anything by moving upwards even if it is two generations. Hopefully the next iteration of the UD is at least 5Gbps, or if a more powerful UCG comes out I can combine it with a mesh AP
