You should definitely 3d print some things things to etch into some metal!

Now I freaking want one! Just think, you can 3D print something in 2:1 scale then create a copy in metal!

I just went thru this same clean up and service of a 57-year old Hercules Ajax 1460 I just acquired. took me 3 partial days to clean it. made by Mazak I'm told. looks very similar in design to your lathe.

As an electrician... using fluro lighting around machinary causes a stroboscopic effect. We counter it using lights on different phases or just using led light to negate the effect altogether. Im sure itll help on your vids with the shutter effect of the camera too

I've been looking for the function of this tool for years, specifically the 3D capabilities. But I really want to know if it can be set up to cut the negative space of an object. To create casting molds of objects.

So are you getting any jobs yet? Local businesses provide lots of opportunities. Our shop bid on jobs from out of State. We won a bid from Dryersburg Tennessee. Aluminum hydraulic cylinders for lifting the drive. Government work, too, made square knockouts, for square switches. We under bid, Greenlee I guess. But remember government work is full of paperwork and testing, and you get your check, in four months. I like the variable three phase inverters, to use for speed control. Good luck, from Southern Indiana.

I worked at Irish Tool briefly, and they used theirs, to copy big wheel seats. He had sheet metal in one building, and machining in the other. He was a lot like Wolfe, from American Pickers. Really into risking his life on those dangerous bikes. Thirty years ago, I wonder if they are still in Hartford City? I don't think shops would use them much, except for special shapes and engraving. They work great on two color name tags, labels, and signs.

OK, still not a machinist but I’ve done some reading. The problem is the stress induced deformation of the sides of the clamp. If you want to keep the current design as much as possible, you might make a clamp piece that is wider and then offset the slot. If the slot is closer to one edge than the other, then the distortion will be asymmetrical with most of the distortion happening on the narrow side. If you then use the wider side as the clamping surface, that change in shape will be less than the narrow side. Of course if doing that, then it might be just as good to simply widen the overall size. Testing will tell you how much more material you need on either side of the slot to reduce your distortion to less than your 0.001” target along the clamp.

I come from the time of drafting tables and slide rules. I also used a Southbend lathe that was driven with a 2inch wide leather belt. It’s surprising what you can do with a manuel lathe. It’s a dying art.
