4:02 An example of unsuccessful "explaining" instead of "showing." They should've left it alone. We inferred her suffering within the bear right away. This was unnecessary.

This mental masturbation is just too much. I can sit here and watch someone tell me why a bear is scary.

Uh, yes, YES, this THING is one of the most disturbing creature in cinema I've ever seen. I remember the feeling when I realized what this is and what it actually is NOT. I was shocked, my brain was on fire realizing what I'm seeing and hearing. I would die right there from terror if I would ever meet something like this in real life.

It is NOT the scariest movie monster. Just watched the movie because of this statement, cause I've wanted to find out for myself and now I can confirm that it was in fact NOT the scariest monster of all time. It had barely any screentime, it only appeared in two scenes, and it wasnt all that scary, the whole alien thing scared me more by itself.

The ritual monster is scarier for me. I think the main reason this bear creature is scary to most people is because we are familiar with the fear of a bear. It's like how a horror game creates some familiarity to make the player relate to the situation in the game. like humanoid creatures or animal like monsters etc. of course sound has a good chunk to do with it, but it's because an actual bear can approach us as the monster one can which makes it more closer to reality. that's my opinion anyway.

This entire movie was so bizarre and eerie. The ending remaining so absurd and unexplained is somehow perfect. Still one of my favorite movies.

The dead are to living, what the living are to the dead. The bear will forever symbolize that without an end, the living can not continue. I think that was the bear symbolizes with the most, the inability to accept death as an outcome instead of an obstacle to overcome and avoid. Without death we can not live, without life we can not die, with neither there is nothing. I see the bear as a manifestation of the human psyche being unable to accept death since we never really want to die. For the fear of death to lessen its impact on the human mind, we must come to terms early on.

The worst part is I've just watched this video and I've been shook to my very marrow and it'll slip away, disappear into my history under music videos and short stories and I'll lose it again. But I also believe we are changed by all interactions no matter how minimal. What an incredible thing that the actions of one can reach to far, brush the soul of another and have such an effect. That this just happened to show up in my recommended videos 3 years after it's upload, on such an ordinary Friday. Thank you. You've made something very beautiful here.

Genuinely the Alien from the thing is the most terrifying. The fact that it can assimilate and imitate a human to a T is terrifying and creates doubt among a group of a uninformed majory vs a informed minority. Like the game werewolf where you as villagers have to decide within a group who the werewolf is and pick who you kill off. The forms it takes on are so fucked too lol

  • @GiantsHunt

Gene Wolfe came up with this concept and called the creature the Alzabo in The Book of the New Sun. The series came out in the early 80s. I’ve always wondered if Vandermeer came up with it independently or borrowed it from Wolfe.

Big scary monster is one thing, but a monster that mimics human voices is uncanny as hell, hearing a strange fake sound with the voice of your best friend must be something horrible

I think that at each stage of our lives what scares us changes. When I was a kid I was afraid of ghosts and mirrors. Now as a dad I'm scared of someone trying to kidnap my little girl. Literally nothing else in movies spooks me like the terrifying reality that there are people out there who kidnap children and do unspeakable things to them.

I saw this movie 5 times in the theater when it came out, it struck a chord deep within me, I love the themes that the story explores; self destruction, life, love, loss & mental illness. Annihilation really hits home, and highlights how beauty & horror walk the same line.

The movie in General was a bit shitty, but to be fair, this mutated bear is one of the most scary montsers, If Not the most scary ever. And the explanation why Isnt really some mumbo Jumbo philosophical bullshit about Afterlife or our deepest psychological fear of existence, its simple. Its an uncanny Valley bear. We all know bears, we all know speach or Sounds Humans make, this bear does Speak, so our brain doesnt expect it to do so, thats why our brain is so irritated and confused about how to react. And as usual when our brain encounters Something that Isnt quite the way it should be, WE react with fear. Imagine you enter a room and all the furniture is in the ceiling. You wouldnt be standing there asking yourself "oh thats quite unusual" No, you would get Out If There as fast as possible cause its freakin uncanny. Thats our genetic consciousness or awareness Programmed into US from Times when WE werent in top of the food Chain, anything that seemed uncanny could have meant death, a Trap, a Predator hunting US or similar, so our brain got conditioned by Evolution to react with fear and caution in such situations. We might have evolved but we still pretty much run on intincts, even nowadays. Our sixth Sense is Just our subconcious Picking some Sounds or smells or literally anything connected to danger and gives us this strange gut Feeling, it basically prepares us for Fight or flight, we're that simple honestly. Nothing supernatural, nothing philosophic, nothing Spiritual, No nonsense Like that. We're biological Machines Programmed by millions of years of Evolution and that explains pretty much any human behavior. Like being affraid of a bear doing Something Hes Not suppose to be capable of. Nobody sits there and is Like "oh thats cool, this bear has evolved to speak and Mimik human voices" No you freaking Run If you hear that Shit.
