    Wow, finally a spot on demonstration of both methods that I've seen by various people /channels! Great job sir! Interestingly there's a guy that has a full shop set up with multiple sharpening systems and he obviously sharpens for a living, but he uses the method that you used on the red handled knife which produces a different angle on the belly and tip. I find it kind of baffling that he never bothered to consult tormek on the correct technique given that he has such an elaborate shop setup! So thank you for the education and the great video!

    Thanks. This was really useful for my model year 2019 Volvo XC60 T5 Inscription (UK model, made in Sweden). I have the 320mm rear discs/rotors and your tip about the 7mm Allen key (i.e. hex) was spot on. The brake pad kit for the rear brakes was Volvo part 32379535 (this may change by model year I guess - Volvo don't want to share part number info). 302mm/ discs uses a different brake pad - possibly kit 32287430. I didn't separate the electronic parking brake. I used a OBD2 to ethernet cable to my PC and VDASH software to put the brakes into service mode. It worked really well and meant I didn't risk damaging a seal. Thanks again

    Thanks very much for the kind words. This video is an unusual one for me in the context of the rest of my channel, but I thought it might help someone at least shortcut a bit of troubleshooting. By coincidence I’m planning to do the front pads this month, and hopefully that goes smoothly, without the emergency brake in the way. Thanks again - I really appreciate the comment.

    With the new KS-123 knife angle setting jig, the point becomes moot regarding getting precise blade angles with the tormek stones that reduce in diameter with wear. They equally useful and fast with CBN or Tormek diamond stones.

    One thing I’ll add before watching the video…this is essentially a slack belt system giving a convex edge. So angle isn’t going to be super exact just based off that. I love this setup though for getting damaged edges cleaned up.

    Nice honest opinion 👍 I have a Tormek T8 coming and the next order is going to be the rotating base, the machine cover and the MB-102 Multibase, which is the part you are talking about. Yes, it's purely for home use and the extended family. I already have the "Edge Pro" Professional Kit that I have been using for around 10 years now. It is an excellent product which will give you razor sharp edges to splitting hair if that is what you desire. It's only downfall is that if the knife edge is badly damaged then it takes a large amount of labour/time and stone material to get them back profiled. It also can't really do bigger items like axes/mower blades etc. Also the honing strop on the Tormek T8 will come really handy as its easy to give the knifes a quick touch up with the honing wheel.

    One thing that still puzzles me is that you use the same wheel for course and fine sharpening by re-profiling the wheel with the profiling stone. Doesn’t that excessively wears the wheel if keep changing it from course/fine multiple times a day ? What am I missing?

  • @greatedgeltd
    @greatedgeltd4 ай бұрын

    Intuitively it would seem so, but in practice very little material is removed, and as long as you have a way to accurately measure wheel diameter you can use it for a long time. I would guess more knives than a CBN wheel but I don’t have data to support that.

  • @ToreDL87
    @ToreDL872 ай бұрын

    One thing you could do is get two wheels, one for fine sharpening and one for course, simply swap between the two. Or even two Tormek's, one lower grade 100-200 dollar one used for course, and a new higher grade one for fine precision work.

I have a 12" brisket knife, and one of the only units I have found that can handle that is a wicked edge. I'd rather not spend the $$ on that one. This unit looks great for a home/hobby usee.

    Question for you, if you have the time. Your lift technique worked perfectly. I'm able to lift a burr for most of the blade, but as I approach the hilt, the burr decreases or disappears altogether. I've already learned (on crappy knives) that a slight delay near the hilt creates an uneven bevel. Do I then keep sharpening the entire blade until the burr appears near the hilt? Perhaps I've already answered my question! Thanks again.

  • @greatedgeltd
    @greatedgeltd6 ай бұрын

    That part of the blade is tricky to get just because it has less contact time. If it is the only part not to have a burr, what I do is dwell on that part - moving the knife slowly - and then once I’m clear of it I move much faster. That allows to not over grind the part of the knife that already has a burr, but also keep it smoothly blended in with the part you are having to apply extra time to… I hope that makes sense. It can sometimes help to apply a bit of marker to the blade as well, just so you can see where the area of focus is.

    Question: how do you determine where to place the jig on the knife, eg. large sweeping curve (like a skinning knife)? Or a deboning knife? I've watched the Tormek 'How to' videos and refer to the manual, but as a visual learner, was just wondering what you do. Thanks!
