On Honing - a first look. Where true sharpness is achieved.

A brief look at the approach to honing in the Great Edge workshop. This is a beginning primer, not getting into compounds etc, but I welcome comments about that..
Nod to @🔪 Findon Knife Sharpening for a tip I learned from him that is shown here..

Well worth the thumbs up, and also looking forward to seeing your stropping protocols. I'd like to see a start to finish in real time of a dull kitchen knife done on CBN, then honed, then stropped. Watching the time spent on different aspects & how you progress would be informative. Well done! 👍

Thanks for the kind words. I have been hesitant up to now to do a ‘start-to finish’ video with the Tormek because others have done so many of them, and also I imagine it being several minutes just watching a knife going back and forth ;). But I guess I can always make the the video, and if it gets 0 views then so be it…

Another good video, thanks! Bear with me on this. Anyone can go mad with a chainsaw and cut down trees. It’s the clearing up that’s important. So with sharpening, it’s relatively easy to grind to an apex, but it’s the cleanup (honing) that’s more important for a sharp, long lasting edge. Looking forward to your fusion protocol.

My standard method is to sharpen on Tormek and hone on the Ken Onion with leather belts. And the key IS the leather belts, which I find far superior to WS' cloth belts. For typical kitchen knives, I generally do 1-2 passes using 1 micron diamond compound at 1.5 - 2° higher than the sharpening angle, and then two passes at the sharpening angle using Tormek PA-70 paste. I sharpen at 15 dps and this method consistently delivers sub-100 BESS scores.

Very good info - thanks. I really do need to get my hands on the WS leather belts..

Lot of good useful information as always! I had a question though in regards to the initial sharpening stages. When reaching the belly/tip of the knife Tormek's live stream videos and manual say that a lifting motion is required and not to "swing" or pull the knife when towards the tip. do you find your technique follows the lifting motion only or more of a "hybrid" where you lift and pull? Hopefully that question makes sense, thanks!

Thanks for tuning in. It can be difficult to show clearly on camera, but I lift only - no pivoting (at least with the standard jig).

Great video! Im looking at purchasing a FVB for fixed angle honing. Im curious if youve tried Tormaks multibase? Ive only found one company that makes a FVB and they are currently out of stock. What are your thoughts?

Greetings from Canada! My T8 arrives this week. Where did you source your FVB? And have a great day.

Thanks for tuning in! Although living in the UK, it’s a canadian accent you hear on these videos ;) I bought my FVB from the late Vadim Kraichuk of Knife Grinders…. Once upon a time I had a second one, but I sold it recently. However there are other sellers nowadays.

Welche Paste benutzen Sie zum Feinabzug / Honing? Die von Tormek? Siliziumoxyd? Diamantemulsion? .....

I just use the standard Tormek paste… i have experimented with others, but I find diminishing returns in working too much with different pastes. A future video will address that. Thank you for tuning in.

I need to do more work with my cloth belts on the WorkSharp… for now I haven’t had impressive results, but I also haven’t put any work in to try to optimise their performance… I will get started on that soon!

We use a cloth wheel with honing compound, I don’t know if this differs from the cloth belts on the work sharp?, or a hard felt wheel? Thank you for your reply and your KZread information. Regards
