Canadian Aussie duo documenting the ups & downs of off-grid life on a small 'no-frills' sailboat, Uintah. No refrigeration, no auto-pilot, hauling our anchor up by hand & adventuring off the beaten path with the purpose of living a more intentional, sustainable, self-sufficient life. Currently exploring the fjords and remote anchorages of the Inside Passage charting a course North to Alaska (slowly)

I’d like to do the flooring on ours too. Looks amazing. How is it holding up for stains? Also did you glue it down?
Allison & James, hi from Calgary. Thanks for that all your episodes in fact. A chill couple sailing a reasonable boat up BC waters taking it ass it comes. More concerned with enjoying each others company, sailing and adventure in the Pacific NW than anything else. The food my gosh kudos to both of you. Time for the 'Cooking w/Allison & James Show'. A part of the world you can get lost on purpose in or lost with a few other boats. But very definitely waters you have to know how to sail its serious water. I've grown tired of those Caribbean waters only channels, yammering on about their new 5M custom built Cat that takes more time for warranty maintenance haul outs than enjoying the sailing. Well done totally enjoyable (Young Cruisers Best New Channel vote yes,)
Actually “ Bobs your Uncle or your Aunt “ can’t judge can’t assume. lol
Or a helicopter pilot living on an off grid island needing to offload his sailboat cause he doesn’t have time to keep fixin it up!
Great video. It looks like you lined your new icebox with something but you skipped over that part. How does this fiberglass frig keep things so cold for so long?
Sorry we skipped over that, the ice box is insulated to r-20 with ridged foam board and the glass is laid directly onto that board. The wooden surround is just the supportive shell to the top loading fridge.
Such a cozy living space, looks amazing!!
You have been busy! And that ice box setup, stroke of genius. I hope to do as well as you on my boat upgrades. Thanks for sharing.
another great video!... small nit: should have attached shop vac to the table saw to reduce the micro-plastic dust spewed out when you cut the f/g box. Cheers
You both are so inspirational and resourceful. I’m so happy to have found you. I’m so excited to see all your beautiful videos and wonderful narration of your upcoming adventures. Thank you for sharing.
Great video I enjoyed it. Good job you 2
Awesome you enjoyed it, thanks so much!
The cushions are popping !!! Also sexy ice box, y’all are living the good life
You seen them in their infantry, glad you can appreciate! Thanks for the support Carly, you’re the best!
Would love to know more details about the cusions -- the kind of materials, the type of foam, etc! Well done, great work
The foam is the original on the boat since the 70’s! Stamped C30, it’s become a little compressed over the years 😅 The fabric was out of the discount bin at Fabricland. The back is vinyl, and the top is chenille we think?! Very budget-end upholstery but does the trick! The videos on the SailRite channel were suuuuper helpful! Highly recommend taking a look at those if you’re looking at doing any sewing on the boat, cheers!
Very good video. Thank you for posting.
Im not one for sailing let alone show interest, but the last one or only one i watched from beginning to the end was a family that sold up their house to be on the ocean traveling and experienced the good and bad that they had committed to was amazing : Zatara / A true sense of reality when most of your life has been on land and this video is humbling to watch , great to have that experience on board by your loved ones to do this together guys safely 🩴🌅
Can you share details on the table? I assume the berth available by dropping the table is out with that modification, but it looks like it opens up the space. Curious about what it is and how it works.
Absolutely! James made it but we just popped it in there without mentioning! We actually took it out of the Airstream we converted - it’s milled cedar, fiberglass and epoxy with a foam core. We have it on the same Lagun table bracket we used in the Airstream. Super handy cause it’s adjustable in all directions and lightweight! It currently doesn’t fit the space to drop down and create an additional sleeping berth, but we have plans to change that and build a rectangular one that does! Just didn’t get there this round of projects. Hope that makes sense, happy to answer any further questions about it!
Upcycling, I could give a TED Talk on that. This video just reminded me of how much of my three boats are things I have upcycled. Off to the Gulf Coast tomorrow for four days and nights of sailing. Stay in trouble, y'all.
Haha I bet! It’s a relatable topic for us budget-friendly average cruiser folks just trying to get by and make it all work! It’s wild how many big new boat builds are on the Tube, but there’s lots to refurbish out there!! Good on ya, mate! Have an absolutely amazing time on your Gulf Coast cruise! Let us know how it all goes, cheers!
You two are so talented and resourceful and o love what you share.
Awww cheers!
I can't wait to see the rugged coastlines & mountainous splendor that you'll capture for all of us to enjoy from afar.
Gosh, hoping we can do them justice. Can’t wait to share! Thank you for the motivational comment to capture it well!
dont forget the cherries
🍒 manhattans on the floor by the fire!
Nice Wombling 🧙🏻♂️😉... you are going to need an adjustable pan cage to keep any pans on your gas hob ... Even at a rocky anchorage you can end up with pans sliding off and spilling. For comfort greeness and safety underfoot indoors or out try cork...
Hahah. Nah, we don’t generally cook much while sailing! Unless we’re motoring or it’s a calm sail downwind. Gotta remember the waters are calm in the inside passage and we’re not doing overnights! We cook/prep food before we leave and just warm it up or eat something that doesn’t require heating! We haven’t had a pot fall off in three seasons of cruising 😉 Cork is a delight and def most sustainable!
Every time I decide that I am going to retire in a off road RV and do some adventuring (a.k.a. Destination Adventure), I see one of your videos and think that maybe I should get a sailboat instead. Your adventures are just as good. I wish I could make up my mind. All the best from Qualicum Beach.
Haha it’s hard to choose! We did the van-life/RV gig for a while and ultimately decided that we’d get into boating because the places we were seeking out were all coastal! We feel that the freedom/adventure afforded by sea is really unmatched by anything else, but it’s a lot more work!!! The other thing that we really love about sailing comparatively is the idea/feeling of moving with the wind! It’s a completely different experience and feel good high than getting around under power. But it’s also, it’s a lot more work! Haha Hope that helps! Qualicum is beautiful, cheers!
I love how you up-cycle materials. You have a new watching subscriber, if you have questions about sailing just ask because the sailing community is always happy to help. I sailed in the North Sea, The Baltic Sea, The North Atlantic, the Med and the Caribbean in the past 25 years. Trust me you'll never stop learning about sailing but that is the fun part. It keeps you fit and agile. I met a couple owning and helming an Oyster 62, just the two of them and they were 84 and 86 still 'running' around the deck. Mostly they would have one deckhand and a qualified captain on board to do passages, whom would leave when the passage was done and the boat secured on a mooring.
I should have known that you'd have a GRAND PLAN (with the wiring, etc.). Real good! Thanks and best wishes as you get on under way.
Cheers Wastinson! Our grand plan still has a few more upgrades but this is all we had time for before cruising season started this year. So far it’s been a riot! Excited to share it soon with you!
nice video now you got me thinking about my propane placement
Anywhere but inside the boat (that’s what we’ve been told at least!)
I don’t comment often but your philosophy on up-cycling whenever you can is hardly seen but so very important in today’s consumerism climate. Keep up the good work! You’re an inspiration. To your continued success! (SV Indigo Oceans on the hard 4 yr refit)
G'day gus. I live on my Columbia 27 sailing boat, SV GEMSTAR. I recived my 300 watt solar panel, so now I am now able to recharge the small battery to recharge my small battery and phone. So this weekend i can make My first vlog on my boat. Gerard.
Hi, great video and projects. What fabrics did you use for the cushions? I am thinking of upgrading them as well on my Catalina, but it is a nightmare to choose without filing it in hands.
Feel this! We waited ages to tackle this project for that exact reason! Unfortunately we can’t provide you a link to buy it anywhere, cause it came out of the budget bin at Fabricland! Not our first pick, but it does the trick! The back is vinyl the top is chenille we think?
@@AllisonandJamesSailing When I bought the boat, I thought the cushions were going to be one of my first projects. But two years later, they are still there, especially after getting the quotes for new foam prices and Sunbrella fabric, which you cannot even see with your own eyes and hands locally anywhere. Could you educate me about vinyl back? My current cushions have it, and it is where water condensates and mold tries to grow from time to time. But when I watched Sailrite videos and all the others, people tried to use the opposite approach with breathable material there. I am confused about what to choose in the future. It could be some local Northwest knowledge that vinyl is better, contrary to more south-minded sailing, but I could not find an explanation on the internet about it anywhere.
Thank you for an inspiring video!!! And thank yo.u for providing the boat foam decking carpet link as well
You’re so welcome!! We hope it works out for you like it has for us!
Allison & James: Hi from Calgary great channel . Great rebuild on a dime looks new. Best of luck going to Alaska I'll be following . Safe sailing.
Wow. Those are some beautiful upgrades! Love the repurposing old shit philosophy.
Thank you, glad you appreciate! Cheers to fixing and repurposing old shit for years to come!
Nice. Do you guys want to drive my boat from everett, Wa to angoon, AK?
Like do a delivery?! Maybe! You can certainly get in touch with us via email with more details! [email protected]
So happy u put out another video. Cheers from Port Hardy
Awe, neighbor! We're stoked about it too!
Awe, neighbor! We're stoked about it too!
The recycled aluminum kitchen countertops are awesome!
They’re awesome! We love the counters, they’re actually stainless steel but aluminium would also work!
@@AllisonandJamesSailing LOL yeah meant to say 'stainless'....
Great idea for the propane mount! I think KZread's caption generator doesn't know the word 'skookum' because it says "pretty skook" and then I guess it thinks the 'um' should be left out 🙂
We could get into calling things ‘skook’, us aussies love shortening everything anyway!
When did you guys do this trip?
This was Aug first 2023!
I hope the cover picture for bating works well :) Thank you for the video anyway!
Bathing suits work great for bathing, cheers!
Great to see solar go in! The installation looks very clean and having charge controllers with temperature sensors in them prevents a very expensive lesson in how lithium battery's really don't like to be changed below freezing.
Cheers mate! The Lithium batteries we went with have built in self-heating mats designed into the batteries, it's pretty cool. Well have more about that in a future video!
My mom was born there :)
Very cool!
nothing like a good careen to check the bottom of your boat
Cheap way to do bottom paint!
The striped prawn is actually a coon stripe shrimp.
Que se maneja solo o tesla ya metió las manos .😅
There’s an autopilot
Hola quedo nuevamente bonito , con el favor de dios 😊 va rápido se ve poderoso. Suerte a disfrutar de mucho trabajo .
Thank you!!
Well done mates! 80 yr old landlubber from Portland, Maine here, scared shyteless for ya all, lol. Thanks for sharing!
Shyted our pants during that big storm! Thanks for writing, cheers!
Thank you for sharing your adventure. It has been my life long dream to be a sea fairer but it may well remain a dream.
Thank you for writing! It’s a great amount of privilege and sacrifice and not always what its chalked up to be, cheers!
you are suposed to add a marchino cherry to a manhattan I love your videos G
I guess that’s why they call it the cherry on top! Cheers Garth, I’ll pick some up went we’re in port next!
Maybe a ice maker and a couple of 5 day coolers would work for you, Amazon has ice makers for 125$ ,makes 26lbs in 24 hrs
Those ice makers are pretty nice and would be handy, but just so I can have my bourbon on ice! We have two separate ice boxes that we made, they’re both more insulated than yeti coolers, they keep ice for well over a week. I’m planning on adding a compressor on board next year and having one ice box as a dedicated deep freeze.
Enjoying the episodes guys!
Cheers Geoffrey! Hope you’re well mate!
On a more serious note, you must check your Alternator - regulator to make it suitable for the Li Batt charging, many boaters using Li Batt use a special regulators that limit the amp output to prevent overheating the Alternator and or damaging the Alt. belt. Please check into this, cheers from Sechelt, BC
Yes! We have a regular internally regulated alternator ~ 35amps (tiny little thing)! Currently I have it still connected to the lead acid starter battery to keep that bank topped up (we can’t change it’s charging profile) I’ve put a dc-dc charger between the lead acid and the lithium to move current between the two banks but that’s more of a ‘back up’ system in case we run our 400amps of lithium down! I do have a balmar regulator and a 70amp externally regulated alternator for our engine but just didn’t have enough time to install it (we have it with us though). So far I’ve been very impressed with the solar, even on a grey day the put out a couple of amps!
@@AllisonandJamesSailing Thats great but I do not have experience with the DC-DC converter , I know it can supply the power for a fixed load example to supply all your Instrument load but I do not know what it will do with supplying a Battery charging load.... do a limited shake down trip to see how everything works and go from there, cheers from Sechelt.
It’s also our first time with one and I defiantly agree that it might not hold a battery charging voltage for long, but we’re very curious to see what it can do! The eventual plan is to have a larger alternators eventually charging off the main power plant.
Love the episode! I won't punish you with any more puns - it seems other folks are much better at them than I am 😀
Hahaha cheers Bob! We do love a good pun! Lay em on us!
