I am Mike Current, 61-years-old, and retired military. I served for over 30 years in the US Army.
After retirement, I opened two small businesses. But after a few years, I sold both businesses because they were taking time away from pursuing personal goals, like hiking and sailing.
I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in 2020 and Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2022. I vlogged (video journaled) my experiences under "Old Man and the PCT" and "Old Man and the AT", respectively.
I sailed around the Chesapeake Bay in my Tayana 37 sailboat over the summer of 2023 and vlogged the experience under the KZread channel "Old Man and the Sea."
I intend to hike the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) in 2024 and will vlog my experience. Follow me under "Old Man and the CDT."
I do not monetize my videos in any manner. However, if you would like to contribute in helping veterans thru-hike as a form of therapy for PTSD, please consider donating to Warrior Expeditions at warriorexpeditions.org/

The desert brings me back to y days at the boys camp outside Ft Bliss in April 1995. No thanks! Yall are doing amazing
Well done the water trail angel.
The red Eft is the reptile/ amphibian symbol of the AT. May I suggest the grey horned toad be the reptile/amphibian symbol of the CDT? Curious how on the AT a hiker avoids cow water at all costs, and the ATC recommends thirst rather than cow pond water - but on the CDT cow ponds are a primary water source marked on FarOut. You need to be tougher and more resourceful on the CDT! The wagon trains in the 1840’s to 1870’s had to make that cutoff by July, or risk being another snowed in cannibalistic Donner Party. Can you imagine walking alongside your ox drawn wagon 15 miles per day max, and dry camping at night? Children crying from thirst, mothers preparing meager rations for the evening meal while the men hunted for ever scarcer game? No FarOut to guide them, no safe destination, no showers and laundry every five or six days. NO CRAFT BEER! We sure had tough ancestors.
hey i'm first! let's do this! Keep going Mike!
Another 33 mile day! 💪 Loving all the cows and wild horses. It's so special to see wild horses.🐎🐎🐎
Wow! Beautiful wide open spaces, pronghorn and wild horses. Excellent!
You seem genuinely happy and grateful to be on trail every day, no matter the circumstances. Attitude is everything. You're doing great, but of course, that's what I expected. 💪👏👏👏
Excellent interview! We met Logman on the CDT at the CO border! Glad you can use your platform to help spread his initiatives. Great video Energizer. -Tacocat
The sky is blue and the CDT exists. Only one of those two things are true. There are so many blind corners and spots where the trail deviates from the well beaten path on the CDT. Don't be too hard on yourself. You eventually figured it out and course corrected. That's really all that matters. Good job Energizer! -Tacocat
33 miles incredible anywhere, any day, any weather! Congratulations! 🎊
I was wondering at the beginning of your video if you had gone past any of the markers or wagon wheel marks from any of the pioneer wagons on their journey to the west coast. And today was the day. Thanks for including the markers. Happy trails ahead!
🤣🤣🤣 Both men let the lady close the gate. Those Mustangs looked good, Nice straight legs and conformation. A lot of times those horses will have one leg that is off. I used to work for a guy that ran his cows out there. Water is your best friend out there and hard to come by at times. Awesome Job!
Woohoo! Happy you had good water sources & clouds! Happy trails!
I so admire perseverance!
Love you guys, love the horses. Keep on keepin on. Peace, Herb
he said "we'll make do"... LOL, more like "doo doo". :)
Those beautiful 🐎 horses

good to see Logman, met him on PCT last year!
Hi Mike ! Glad you had a somewhat cooler day and of course No cow water You guys are really motoring along Stay safe 😊
Wow! Great job! Many blessings for safe travels! ❤❤
You guys are making great time. Pick em up and put em down Brother!
Hi Mike - Really doing great with mileage even with the heat. Glad the wind was able to cool it down for you guys. The area you are traveling, is this private land or government/parks land? So nice to see people do the water caches out there. Thanks for taking the time to get pictures of the animals, even though I don't know what some of them are. Amazing how they blend in with the ground. Be Strong, Be Safe, and thanks for taking us on this Journey.
Great walk. Yeah. Nice miles, good water, friendly animal faces. Thanks as always for taking us along.
Good morning, Mike. Love seeing the wild horses, cows not as much, though. I'm not being negative. You can see cows lots of places, you can't see wild horses just anywhere. I'm sure they are interesting to watch as you walk by. Seems like you can see forever out there, it is truly beautiful country. I never would have believed it before your videos. Glad you had a breeze and overcast skies to give you a slight break from the heat. We're fighting heat here in Missouri (heat indices of 108-112). Of course, I'm not out hiking 33 mile days either. Glad you didn't have to resort to cow water. Take care, Mike. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.
For temperatures we hace two major scales Fahrenheit and Celsius. The conversion isn't so simple. It's similar for CDT days number. July 25 is Day 86 in Energizer scale but Day 84 in Early Bird scale. I'm constantly switching between them. 🙂
Would have thought Knee Deep would stay with the group for company and safety.
Excellent! You found the secret warp tube in the game that cut that extra 2 miles off. We found it too! -tacocat
Great job Mash! - you nailed the essence of Energizer!! - Yeah!!!
Great video once again. Miles on trail days……you cover massive distances, what pace per mile do you average?
What are the temps like, during the day and at night?
Thank you for sharing your journey with us! Love your videos! You're an inspiration ❤
Awesome wildlife moment there! Beautiful landscape you were going through.
Who is the guitarist playing the amazing music in the background?
More horned toads! Topography looks more--Utah-esque? Camp oasis looked wonderful! Great mission!
Reminded by your images of the long road into the distance: Roads Go Ever On Roads go ever ever on, Over rock and under tree, By caves where never sun has shone, By streams that never find the sea; Over snow by winter sown, And through the merry flowers of June, Over grass and over stone, And under mountains in the moon. Roads go ever ever on, Under cloud and under star. Yet feet that wandering have gone Turn at last to home afar. Eyes that fire and sword have seen, And horror in the halls of stone Look at last on meadows green, And trees and hills they long have known. The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way, Where many paths and errands meet. The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with weary feet, Until it joins some larger way, Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say. The Road goes ever on and on Out from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone. Let others follow, if they can! Let them a journey new begin. But I at last with weary feet Will turn towards the lighted inn, My evening-rest and sleep to meet. Still 'round the corner there may wait A new road or secret gate; And though I oft have passed them by, A day will come at last when I Shall take the hidden paths that run West of the Moon, East of the Sun.
JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were great hiking buddies in the UK between the Great Wars. Tolkien penned this poem, if memory serves. As they walked, Tolkien and Lewis conjured up Middle Earth and Narnia from the hills and dales, the billowing clouds and the birdsong. They listened to the trees and the animals and the Great Silences. Energizer and Log Man are not the first soldiers to walk their wars away, nor will they be the last.
Excellent! What a great guy! Unbelievable what he's doing carrying that log. 💯 That custom hoody with the log pattern too. Nice!😎
33 miles is outstanding ❤
Those bikes are on the Great Divide Mtn Bike Route, running from Canada to Mexico, I did it two years ago, great fun! It’s bikepacking!
❤🙏🥾🥾😊
dont you pack a couple of extra water containers when you know water scources are scarce.
Great day. Yeah. Loving the desert and finally antelope. Have family in Lander. Enjoy your time there.
We used to joke there are more Antelope then People in Wyoming. It is great to see all that wide open space is still alive. Awesome Job.
Morning, Mike. Don't know how you hiked that many miles in that heat. You da man. Ya'll are doing great. Like your idea of taking a break and cameling up at each decent water source. Glad to see trail angels out with water where it's needed. Those pronghorn and wild horses were really neat to see. Not something you see every day. Take care of yourself and each other in that heat. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.
Hi Mike. What a hike in the heat and lack of water sources. great to see trail angels with water out there. Unbelievable how remote this area is. Glad to see Early Bird knew her limits with the heat and will go short. you guys are doing great with another big day. Be Strong, Be Safe, and thanks for taking us on this Journey!
Mike, I lived and ran and hiked long distances in the Chihuahuan Desert for 25 years. After losing water accidently from a punctured water bottle on occasion, I always carried a grapefruit. They have the electrolytes you need and will take you a long ways without drinking water if the necessity happens to arise. Oranges won't cut it in high heat. You are intrepid. Thanks for your videos!
Alright, I have to ask. The landscape looks a little barren, no cover… what do the ladies do when they need to go to the bathroom?
There is a lot of nothing and nobody, you have an hour at a time before somebody comes along pretty often.
Coffee time with Mike! 33 miles you are motoring along ! Stay safe❤
I believe 5 August is your AT competition Anniversary? It’s coming up soon! Thank you for continuing to share all of these videos. I’m retiring from the Army in Feb. I plan on hiking the AT either this coming May or May 2026. I look forward to rewatching your train up videos and packing videos to assist me in my preparation. Thank you again Mike!
Lovely looking hike my friend! This was soothing and inspiring presentation! Love it
