Many years ago I read a blog about clarity in legal writing, based in the UK. The fellow mentioned a lease that used 334 words to define "building". He took a stab at it and got it down to about 160, then tried it again and got it down to around 30, but the best thing was when he said, "...and I drove by the place. There is one structure on the entire lot - why in the hell are they even defining 'building'?"

I'm reminded of something that Gene Roddenberry supposedly did when a big name sci-fi writer turned in a script. It had Kirk giving substantial technical detail to Sulu about a maneuver. Roddenberry cut it all out and replaced it with "Reverse course!"

Can anyone provide a citation for the quote "there is no such thing as good writing, only good rewriting," attributed here to Louis Brandeis? The same quote is frequently attributed to Robert Graves. However, I cannot seem to find the original source of the quote from either.

This man is one of the most intelligent humans--near asymptotic on his own half-bell curve graph. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing someone with this kind of talent making videos to a few thousand views. It reminds me of the Daniel Quinn quote “Secret teachings aren't ones that teachers keep to themselves. Secret teachings are ones that teachers have a hard time giving away.”

This man is a total ass. I took one of his English lit courses at UT in the late 90s. He’s extremely arrogant and got off on humiliating and shaming students. He is hands down the worst professor I ever had. 👎 👎

I'm a first-year paralega student looking forward to putting your wisdom into practice (and heart). I wish you a continued blessed career and journey along life's windy path. Sincerely, Keysha

It is about the tyranny of mediocracy, to go beyond, to have faith in yourself, to not allow the ordinary experience of others, at any level, to limit what you understand, so your truth can find expression in a court of law.

Your thoughts felt like lightning thrusts, energizing my body and my mind, I cannot overstate the impact of your words. It is as though all of my work as a self-litigant, trying to understand and explain my case, coalesced into this wonderful path forward. Who as a self-litigant experiences such excitement?

I had the distinct privilege of being a law student of this great jurist 45 years ago and have never heard him utter a word with which I did not wholeheartedly agree. We occasionally ran across each other in practice and I later had his second wife as a student of mine. I would categorize him as one of the greatest lawyers I have ever known. Words of wisdom, thanks, Bill.
