I'm looking forward to a review of the new SVS Ultra Evolution Towers. Not the Pinnacles or the Titans, but just the entry level Evolution Towers. The Titans and Pinnacles are getting all the attention for now, but I think they are priced well out of reach for most home theatre enthusiasts. I would love to see a review of the Evolution Towers vs the previous Prime Pinnacles. Just a thought.

In my experience, speaker placement is the single most important aspect of stereo sound. It is challenging, time consuming but worth every bit of time and effort to get one's speakers dialed in. Once set up properly, I forget about the speakers, the cables, the amp and the source. All that it left is me and the music.

None of them as there is no headphone input for late night sessions but if the Marantz had the headphone input that’s the one I would buy. Also heos need some improvement like let me just skip to the next track with out a bunch of options popping up

BTW.. who am I to be the Simon Cowell of home theater judging? 😅. I was very impressed with Pauls theater. We only spent like 10 mins demoing before we rushed out to go to lunch. Actually I wanted more time to hang out at Pauls house but everyone was hungy so we went to lunch. Paul's subs were very well blended. The bass and volume were exactly how I like to watch movies (about 10-15 below reference). Near field subs were not overpowering and did not take your attention away from the movie. Paul's home theater was on the same level as all of the theaters I heard at Mwave. Very well calibrated and just the right amount of volume and bass. Additionally, I really liked the scene lighting that Paul has around the whole room.

@@DailyHiFi I was watching this video from Acoustic Fields ''Don't set your subwoofer in the corner'' and a few others. After reading your comment, I did more research and found that you might be right about the corner placement of the subwoofer. It seems that opinions are mixed but generally in favor of corner placement

@@DailyHiFi This one is interesting first answer is from gemini AI Avoid corners and walls: Putting your subwoofer in a corner or right up against a wall can make the bass boomy and uneven. This is because bass waves build up in corners. Second answer is from ChatGPT Corner Placement: Placing the subwoofer in a corner can amplify its output because the sound waves reflect off the walls, creating a louder and more robust bass response. However, this might also lead to "boomy" bass or uneven sound distribution. My point is if you don't have IQ on the sub you can't compensate. Yes i know it will be a cheap sub. Means not very good, but you want to squeeze as much as you can from it.

Joe here. The best research on subwoofer placement has been done by Todd Welti at Harman. He has a paper which you can find online. To summarize, the corners offer the most room gain which can help with subwoofers with limited output, but they have worse seat to seat consistency. Mid-wall placement offers the best seat to seat consistency, but has less boundary gain than corners. More subwoofers are better for smoothing out room modes, with significant diminishing returns after 4 subwoofers. I would be weary of acoustics advice from AI chat bots. They're often wrong as they're scraping info from forums which can contain often repeated myths about audio. The output you've shown from AI seems to refer to common advice about speaker placement. If you ask it again if the same advice applies specifically to subwoofers, not main speakers, it might come up with a different answer.

Also. The bigger the subs the more the null becomes apparent and you’ll be able to hear it. It’s best to have more 12”-15” subs spread out and calibrated together than two big 18” subs. Smaller subs are also easier to position

  • @ryankramer

Not really but that was more a limitation of the venue vs the vendors trying to push an agenda. It's tricky as I would prefer the room is too big vs too small hotel rooms. I feel the SVS room got the closest to approximating what you're describing.

In terms of only audio at Mwave.... the Ascendo room was the least loud and therefore not a favorite of mine. My favorite was the loudest room, JTR, but I will say the Grimani was the best Atmos experience even when sitting on the side of the room. SVS Room was only (I think) 5.2.4 and they also were playing well under refence, but they cranked it up on request and then it sounded a lot more like the other rooms. The RBH room was great too. Seems like it's hard for everyone to compare due to difference in preferred listening level and of course there was only a little overlap in source content played.

Waiting for the special rich people estate sale that didn’t like it at all if I’m so lucky. Only certain movies have that code to match for the seats. I think Jurassic Park and 9 use it. With JP getting 3D and motion sounds amazing in theory. You more or less have 4D at that point.

Yes joe the subwoofer can cause sbir. It will cause a cancelation with the walls at the frequency with 1/4 wavelength distance. Mathew Poes just did a presentation on this that can be found on KZread. I believe 3 feet is the max. That's why you should place in a corner and if the box is too big you'll get a cancelation no matter what.

Something about that guy's demeanor that rubs me the wrong way, but he sometimes has good information. I can't get past the serious but sad look. I know I can be petty at times. For context, I've talked with him on the phone and talked to him over text and he wasn't all that cool towards me. So there's that.

I tried the Dune but connecting via network to the drives weren't working well, especially on 4k remux through Plex or Dune HD. I have plenty of bandwidth but neither direct Ethernet or wifi connection was able to get to the high bit rate needed and regularly would stutter. Unfortunately returned it and stuck with the shield, which just works. Only way I got it to work on Dune was by using an external SSD with the file loaded and then plugged direct into the Dune.

Hard to say without hearing the KEF. However when the Klipsch might be $2000 retail, they actually sell for like $800... so in that case Klipsch all day. I can say they aren't the super bright type Klipsch. They are very good speakers. And those KEF just aren't going to have the output or be reference capable. Then add the Klipsch are sealed boxes which I find desirable for in-walls.

I politely disagree. The question is can you do it without a "miniDSP" the answer is yes you can. Because a lot of pro amps like the Crown XTI have DSP built into the amplifier where you can play around with time alignment and filters and such. I think the real question is can you do it without "DSP" in general.
