Worked just as described, also on search in Finder! MacBook Pro M3, mac OS Sonoma 14.4.1
Please, Remove the lens from the camera first. Why strain the bayonet like that.
In most cases, all you have to do is push the filter towards the lens with your fingers while turning it.
Technique? The computer did all the work. I would hesitate to even call it a trick, because that’s exactly what generative AI tools are for. It’s like calling a spark plug socket an ‘easy trick to never drop a spark plug ever again’. Cool photo though.
Are you kidding me?!? I wish I saw this weeks ago😅I just got my lens back from repair and it is always a pain with filters, so I used som anti-seize on the threads. These are great suggestions! Thank you.
Oh no! i feel your pain 😭 ah well, u r ready for next time 😉
Thanks i just got into photography a couple months ago and my nd filter has been stuck on one of my lenses, didnt want to risk damaging it so at least i know how to get it off now thanks
awesome! glad it was so timely 😄
genius!
cheers! 👌🏻
all my filters that get stuck are variable nds and cpls so they just turn...
The best way is to apply a couple drops of wd40, works every time
Who twists their filter that hard on....
all it takes is a dropped lens and things get jammed quick!
In England the “hose clamp” is called a “jubilee clip”.
this made my day 💯
Sucks balls that the cloud product doesn't support smart collections..
lr cc classic definitely does! but yeah, would be great if lr cc did too!
Practical tips if threads are not stripped. Good one with the hose clamp, Ryan. Jar opener from kitchenware aisle should also work. Careful use of large mouth vice-grip around rubber band, also. New sponsor: Ace Hardware 😊.
ive seen those before, never tried it though! ace hardware for the sponsor win 😉
And this is why I don't use a UV filter, but only the lens hood. 😊
if you only use a lens hood, you're leaving so much on the table, definitely not doing the best job you could. sorry, but not something i would brag about if i were you.
@jkstudio131 Not if otherwise you indent to use a UV filter. Only exception if you have environmental conditions that are harsh, like sand. Other filters, like polarisation filters, are a different story. That's why I limited my statement to UV filters.
im with u here! uv filters arent my jam either, i prefer the hood :) BUT i also have a CPL and Black Mist on my lenses 24/7 so sadly dont get to use the hoods anymore!
This happened to me recently, dam CPL filters are the worse b/c they just spin and are really really thin. The trick that worked for me was to use a wooden spoon and just keep tapping it all around. It loosened the threads from lock. I have moved to magnetic filters LOL
wooden spoon for the win! never heard of that one 😉 haha. magnetic cpls are definitely awesome!
When buying filters one should also Google for “ filter removal tools “ . There are plenty to choose from and very easy to use. Good luck.
If it happens during a job where you don't have any of those tools at hand, just use the sole of your shoe. It has saved me during several jobs. 😂
WOAH 🤯🤯🤯 I never EVER would have thought of that, but actually in a desperate situation that is so smart! Hopefully u can find somewhere nobody is watching though when u take off your shoe lol
Gr8 tips Ryan thanks for sharing those
You bet! Cheers Steve
I was wondering why your filters were unscrewing in the opposite direction as usual. Then realized your video is mirrored XD
DANNGIT - stupid selfie mode lol! Yeah u are correct. That or I have custom reverse threaded filters 🖖😄
You'd have to be a gorilla to either cross thread or over tighten a filter that can't come off without tooling. If this happens to you with any reputable filter brand then I'll gladly take your equipment from you.
its honestly super easy! if u drop a camera or lens the filter can crack and the threads no longer spin off easily. or the thread is just hard to grip. whole reason for making this is precisely because ive had it happen 3 or 4 times! 😅 but sure, maybe im a gorilla 🦍
I keep a couple of wide rubber bands in one of the pockets of my fishing/photography vest. They save me routinely when using a CPL filter.
That's a great idea!
Get a filter wrench
definitely handy! this is more of a “what to do when u dont have time to wait for your filter wrench to get delivered” situation ;)
I would be careful IF using the back of a knife that folds. If it closes suddenly you might get a bad cut
💯! i would never use a folding knife for this job - im way too clumsy 😂🖖
They also sell thin rubber sheets about 6-8 inch diameter at hardware stores or on amazon for help removing jar lids with a better grip that will work in place of the mouse pad and they are more flexible than a mouse pad. The hose clamp would slide right over those rubber sheets.
Now THAT is an amazing suggestion! I'm going to check that out!
I was surprised the first time I had a filter get stuck. The rubber band trick worked, thankfully.
It's funny - I seem to be able to screw mine on MUCH tighter than I can ever screw them OFF haha. Glad u got yours off ;)
What is YOUR go-to method for removing stubborn lens filters?!
To much blurry foreground in the second image. I prefer the first one.
For sure! This was more about showing the tool than building the perfect photo :) I agree
well explained and straight to the point, thank you
U bet! Glad it helped
YES works! Thanks !!!
You're welcome!
Excellent explanation !!! GREAT JOB !!!
Glad it helped!
What exact package was used?
Hi Natalia! I think this one was Clean & Classic V2!
YES!!!! It worked!
Hurray!
Quite shocked how well this worked as I thought it would only be useful for landscape with its low complexity. However, I was able to extend a poorly cropped shot of my friend with the British Parliament buildings behind her. Thanks!!
The only issue is I found is using a screenshot gives you a very low res photo. In my case, about 865kb. Instead, I exported my processed NEF file as a proper jpg (eg 9meg) and opened it up in paint. I was able to expand the white background on the one edge requiring filling. I then reimported the modified file and used the same process described by you. The only difference is that it had a white background instead of your grey. The same process worked great and now I have a high res file to boot.
awesome! yes exporting definitely is the best for increasing resolution :) For printing, heading into photoshop is probably better but hey, this is easy!
The idea for social networks is good, this process does not work to print photos with good quality.
in general u are probably right roberto! although the files ive been getting have been looking pretty good :) tempted to give printing a shot!
What about Lr mobile app?
it works exactly the same! you just need to screenshot your zoomed out photo on your phone and follow the same process to use this trick in Lr Mobile!
@@SignatureEdits Thanks 🙏
@@sohailchaudry Good luck!
Please dont do this if you use raw or dont want to loose resolutions... a screenshot vs a raw or evek a full size jpeg from a dslr/mirrorless you loose a lot... just go straight to photoshop
All depends what you're trying to do! For sharing on social media, this method is 100% A-Okay :) But if you're printing a 36 inch canvas, sure, photoshop will work better for you! You can always resize the jpg so that the generated file is larger too :)
@SignatureEdits of course, nowadays everyone is on their phone so yeah your point make sense lol!! Maybe it's just me but I find that generative ai and the remove tool are much more performant on photoshop than on LR.
@@Digit0wL Yeah definitely not just you! I think they Lr one is either intentionally "dummed down" to make photoshop more appealing, OR to make it faster in order to be more efficient for batch editing. Knowing adobe it might be both lol.
It's a brave new world and for LR users, just the beginning!
things are progressing quickly!
Very good idea, but would have loved it if he had slowed down a bit
Noted! Thanks for the feedback Simon :)
Never heard of this! Thank you!!!
You bet Frank! I found it messing around by accident!
The resolution of a screenshot is not anywhere close to the resolution of even a 24 MP sensor let a loan a higher MP sensor. You're going to end up with tiny unprintable pics only good for online viewing.
Hi Mark! Actually the workaround is super easy. You can screenshot the image like this and upscale the resolution before importing back into lightroom. Takes 5 secs in preview on a mac. Ofc the resolution of your screen will make a big difference in how high res the initial screenshot is, and there are definitely limitations there. On my retina mac I'm finding it more than enough, but I don't normally print my work, only share online!
@@SignatureEdits Sorry but if you believe that an upscaled screenshot will have the same resolution as an image from 24mp sensor then I'm not sure what to say. Yes this would be great for Facebook or Instagram but nothing else.
@@artdawggy It all depends on use case. There are 16mp photos printed onto billboards and they look fine. The retina display on a mac is about 254ppi, so a screenshot upscaled would probably be just fine as a print under 16" or so. But for sure, if your goal is a 4ft print, open it in photoshop!
This is great. I have been looking for a editing solution like this . So thank you
Glad you liked it!
Wow, really going outside the box, so woiuldn't work n an exported JPeg, because one needs the space for generative fill?
Thanks! Yes it would work, but you would need to take a screenshot of the exported jpg to extend the frame beyond just the image... Generative AI in lightroom only works within the frame of the photo, so that's the trick that let's you work "outside" of your image to expand the shot!
@@SignatureEdits So a screenshot needs to be taken in any case🤔
@@kapilbhallafoto Not necessarily! You could export the jpg and paste it onto a larger canvas using Paint, Photoshop or Canva etc... Then save that out at a higher resolution and import back into Lr. But at that point it probably makes a lot more sense just to head into photoshop, as you're no longer saving a lot of time!
Intriguing post, Ryan. Will have to give this a try, just for fun, if nothing else. So, the image resolution of the Gen AI fill is less than the resolution for the rest of the pic? When exporting, what resolution applies? Can new pic be upscaled? BTW, general Q for you about pinned YT comments: noticed that your own pinned comment has a love icon - viewers can’t do that, I understand, so you “love” your own comment? Kinda brash😊,
Hey Paul! So the resolution of the new photo is going to be whatever the size of the screenshot is you upload into lightroom. BUT you can easily fix this by opening the screenshot and resizing it before importing into lightroom... In theory, you could actually use this method to create a HIGHER res file from your original photo (or w/e res you want) On a mac it's super easy - Open the screenshot in preview, then go to tools > resize and select your preferred resolution. And yeah, YT algorithm is weird and goes by how much engagement a post has. If there isn't a pinned comment, you get docked. If there isn't a hearted comment, you get docked... So even though it makes zero sense, I generally just do it on my comment when I first post the video to please the YT overlords 😅
Sounds like he’s talking to a four year old
Darn... I was aiming for 3 y.o ;)
I shall definitely use this. Usually I fix framing and composition errors by cropping but now I can correct images where the framing is too tight. Cool...
Great to hear! Glad u enjoyed it Alastair!
Very clever. What a Fantastic workaround and Hack Ryan. Its like its big brother Photoshop but is only useful for screen or photos for social media, which is great. As long as you dont try printing. If you want to print there are a couple of guys on YT offerring a free workaround to get better resolution, so I`d probably go that route. But clearly if youve found this, it cant be long before Adobe will pick up on it and include it soon in an update. Cheers Ryan love your stuff.
Cheers Steve! I think you are absolutely right. Im not sure if adobe is planning to add this, or if they intentionally held it back so that photoshop doesn’t lose all its features! Time will tell :)
@@SignatureEdits You might be right. Drip drip LOL!
@@stevejarvis186 😅
Awesome idea for a quick fix to share on social media. Probably not good enough for a portfolio print.
Hmmm now im wondering! Maybe ill print one just to see 😅 Comparing the Lr and Ps versions together I honestly havent noticed much difference which is super interesting!
This is honestly so sad. We should not be celebrating and championing this ability to create false worlds at the expense of our real one
Fair points!
This is art, not creating a false world. Photography is no longer about reality
@@erikajolley6767So what is it about, now? Are YOU not taking photos of reality? This is AI use in the video, has nothing to do with photography.
@@CrawfordHeisz Interestingly enough, edits like this have been going on for decades... It's just that they were done by photoshop artists for campaigns with big budgets and took hours per photo to pull off. AI isn't doing anything new here... It's just making that process extremely easy, fast & available to everyone. So ironically enough, the hot topic debate is over AI... when really at it's core, it's the same debate since photoshop first came out :)
Boooooo generative ai is burning the world. It uses so much energy!!!
You're not wrong that AI uses a lot of energy! That said, the USA first computer the ENIAC, weighing 30 tons, used 200 KILOWATTS of electric power and contained over 18,000 vacuum tubes, 1,500 relays, and hundreds of thousands of resistors, capacitors, and inductors. All this for less compute than you get today from a dollar store calculator. So yes, all technology is massively energy dependent at first, and either grows in efficiency over time, or is abandoned for more efficient technology that replaces it. The whole reason we use machines at ALL is because by their nature, they allow us to do more with less... Not to discount the many valid criticisms of AI, but I like to think like an optimist and search for the good where possible. After all - AI is here and will continue to become more and more of a player in every arena, whether we like it or not.
Maybe it's faster because it's working with a smaller file, but I don't really know if file size is relevant for AI stuff
Could be! All I know is it is about 10x the speed :)
