Would a silver dish with a white sock give the same results as a base white dish with or without a sock?

No idea what you are laughing at, as I most certainly know exactly what I am talking about. There is a different in depth of field, but on a clean background and at a wider focal length (ie 50mm) the actual fall of off focus in minimal. Check a depth of field calculator to see it spelled out. Furthermore, yes lenses have different sweet spots of focus, but (a) most new lenses are quite sharp throughout (b) this is not usually an issue unless you are very very very zoomed in. In other words, I didn't say it makes NO DIFFERENCE, but it makes very minimal difference in the final look of the photo, Doctor.

Lindsay, what a great video! I did some tests at home, and the effect I get are continuous lines, not dotted lines like in your image. Can you tell me why these dotted lines appeared in your photo, if the shutter was open the whole time?
