    I still don't like how they do weapons. There used to be a priest class in 3.5 and the difference was the weapons one could choose were the same weapons that the Deity would use such as shortbows or longbows for Sehanine, Daggers for Bhaal, and Longswords for Tyr just as a few examples. Priests were restricted to cloth armor however but they were given more spell slots and twice as many cantrips and daily abilities plus bonuses to things like control undead or turn undead.

    Terrific discussion @DD. I agree completely, Shadowdark is NOT merely dungeon delving. Wilderness and city adventures, travel, and variable settings are all wide open with this system. Too much of the initial Kickstarter introduction focused solely on torch timers, darkness, and other dungeon crawl aspects of play, but that ain't what it's all about. It perplexes me how RPG gamers get so hamstrung by the limitations of rules systems/RAW. Shadowdark, 5e, DC20, etc... take what you want/like and make your own system and settings. The games are YOURS! Enjoy! TY @DD.👍

    @@direden For sure. I’m a big fan of SD and feel we need to break this offhand stereotype. As a GM I’m creating my own hierarchy of world setting > campaigns > one-shots. Campfire for overland travel or Into the Wyrd & Wild, city tables from Kelsey/SD and Maze Rats, etc It isn’t that difficult to “get out of the dark dungeon” and adventure in the light of day. SD can work in many RPG genres and flavors. 👍🏼

    If you think about the torch timer as like a “roll for initiative” moment where you light a candle and enter the dungeon. It really more of a buckle your seatbelts moment rather than the whole purpose of the game

    To be fair, the expanded version of I6: Ravenloft occurred in 3.5 with Expedition to Castle Ravenloft. But I agree that modules are largely missing from 5e. We get the anthology books, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

    Again, if this is a medieval setting, the players, after clearing the wizard's tower, can't sell it because it doesn't belong to them, it belongs to the local lord. That would be like me becoming a squatter in an abandoned house, then attempting to sell the house. It isn't mine to sell, just because it is abandoned. There are these pesky things called "laws" that get in the way.

  • @user-cx7kg6ok9b

    If you want to save the world...save the cheerleader. You will most likely not have a thief's guild in a town. Not a large enough population to support the number of professional thieves to require a guild. Also, if you're being realistic and your world is set in a medieval timeline, there will be no general store. In medieval times, most people made what they needed because money wasn't in wide circulation. If they needed something they couldn't make themselves, they bartered for it. There were no large scale manufacturers, no mass-produced goods. What merchants that do exist would be more-or-less specialized. Typically speaking, armor is made for each individual. It's not like there were "small", "medium" and "large" armor types. A warrior would go to the armorer and have his/her measurements taken and then wait a few weeks or months while the armor is created. The problem with too many fantasy games is that the creators don't really understand "medieval". They think of everything as modern, just without the technology. That is completely unrealistic.

    Agreed that smaller, more modular adventures are more fun to run than pre-written, sprawling campaigns. My current Shadowdark campaign is just very loosely based off the old B2 Keep on the Borderlands module. Every session they explore a new cave, some area outside the keep or have an adventure inside the keep itself. So much easier to run and prep for.

  • @direden
    @direden3 күн бұрын

    I am using Shadowdark for 2 long running campaigns and i am enjoying it. If you are scared of lethality of the system i have 2 solutions for you. 1. Use max value of the HP dice when creating 1st lvl character. 2. Make characters from same faction (like adventure guild or fighter guild), so if character dies you can easily bring backup char without having problem how to fit that char to story. "I was sent from guild to help you".

Having played a couple of times already, I really like the torch timer, but I can also see where if you're not in a dungeon you can just enjoy all the rest of the minimalist rules and just save that torch timer for the dungeon to amp up the entensity.

    Ancestry or Lineage would've been a better name imo. Anyways, I agree, the stats should just not be tied to any of that. Just increase the amount you can get through Point Buy or an Array, for example. Like if you're an Acolyte you could be one that follows a faith that may recquire military training but the background in the rules doesn't let you put the bonuses on STR. To me this dratically limits what backgrounds can be used on some characters. The origin feats are nice but there really isn't a net gain imo due to the way the stat bonuses are being handled. But this is from what I can gather from previews and stuff. Reading the actual book will help a lot and may change my thoughts. This will probably not matter on most tables anyways. Most people already do what was said in Tashas so why let backgrounds stop us from just plopping those bonuses wherever we want?

    Different "species" can't interbreed. Maybe they are subtly trying to eliminate those "problematic" half races. You know... the ones which are actually a hopeful sign of equality and harmony, representing different types of beings coming together and loving one another. They seem to think the history of how race was used in the world somehow applies to groups of beings with differing biologies, magical environmental adapations, planar origins, etc. I find the whole matter laughable. If you postulated that orcs have larger amygdylas than humans, denser bones, and more twitch fibers than humans as a reason they tend to be stronger or prone to aggression, would that be racism or is that "the science"? Ultimately, where your pluses come from doesn't matter one whit mechanically, but the path to it in modern D&D is BS. 😛

    My complaint is we have nothing at from the new monster manual it should be released alongside the phb. UA playtesting were against the existing stats blocks where there should have been at least a sample selection of different CR from the new MM. This implies to me that the 5.5 monster manual has minimum changes. My guess is that they are going to fix the problems with challenge rating system and throw in a few new monsters then call it a day.
