I had a 688 that I purchased because a friend of mine in college had one as the heart of his studio and he recorded about 40 maxell xlIIs cassettes worth of music. He died in the late '90s but our friend Kenny had all of the cassettes and kept them safe this whole time. When I heard about that, I put up a GoFundMe in order to buy a 688 and get all that music onto my hard drive. It was funded within hours of me posting the project, we went to a music college so so many people were actually on those tapes and stepped up with cash. I had so much fun working on that project but unfortunately, I had really no use for a 688, let alone the space when I was living in an apartment, they're pretty big units lol, so I sold it on reverb and put the money into Bitcoin for my friend's son. The best part about this whole project is that he died when his son was very young, I think maybe 2 years old or so, so this gave me the opportunity to show him how incredible of an engineer his father was. Old gear is so much more to some people, in this case it was the heart and soul of my friends legacy.

Try alnico blue in modern, remove the 330k from master and you can deafen yourself. Remember 30Watts is RMS (peak can be much higher) and the no negative feedback design characteristics of AC30 mean lots of top end. Power is proportional to frequency .... Making it really really really loud.

Reminds of a 68 mahogany thinline with PAFs I made for a friend. Except it had a maple rosewood neck stained darker to match the body and a walnut top. That was a beautiful guitar. Probably the best I have ever played. But similar to yours with the semi hollow mahogany. Like that setup better than a Spanish style semi / hollow body. Because it is solid wood, not plywood. Has more of a pure solid body nature, but it also has a lot of resonance and semi hollow body vibe going on. Yeah, I need to build another one. Like one of those things I was doing it for a friend, something I wouldn't do for myself, I fell in love with it instantly, but had to give it to her. 😢 A few weeks after I got it together. It is ok I'll build another someday. Get so involved with so many different guitars. It is like 4 builds away. Still trying to finish the ones I have started.

As these are rare as hens teeth, Tascam still make digital portastudios, and although not that sought after tape sound, the workflow and commitment levels would still be quite similar. A much more pragmatic solution perhaps? Would be good to see a comparison and what you think of them?

I knew that loop was Darren King when I first heard it in the Jazzmaster video. It’s such a signature sound for him, and it really makes me miss 2000’s Mutemath. Honestly your whole backing mix there is very Mutemath. The bass tone screams Roy Mitchell-Cárdenas.

When I was young and just starting on my musical journey, I was given Hi Fi gear, speakers, fx pedals etc. I made use of them until I destroyed them or they crapped out. People may think I'm an idiot, I have never sold anything.... I have given away, guitars, pedals, monitor speakers, digital recording systems, patch bays, eq's, compressors, anything to people who are going to use it and benefit from those things. The only thing I never passed on was my Tascam Porta 1.... used it until it died. It was such a fantastic tool which allowed me to experiment, learn, expand , play and generally gave me so many years of creative fulfillment that I can honestly say that it was the one piece of equipment that totally transformed my life.

I have always liked vintage Teac/Tascam recorders & mixers, going back to when I was teen in 1979, and the Teac A-3440 was new (with the matching 2A mixer & MB-20 meter bridge). The 388 does appeal to many folks who are still into analog recording, but from an overhaul/repair perspective, it might be better for others to achieve the same result by separating the recorder from the mixer, for example, a Tascam M-308 with a Tascam 38.

As a PortaOne Studio owner since 1987, this video makes me smile. Somewhere there are a handful of cassettes that are degraded beyond recognition. I still have the unit, but a drummer i worked with broke it by plugging a power amp into it (I think). Id still like to get it repaired. I also have my dad's TEAC stereo reel-to-reel that needs some TLC, and a box of reel-to-reel tapes id love to hear again. Thanks, Rhett 🙏🏻🤘

This is quite powerful if integrated using an Apple Aggregate (Audio) Device implementation (look up if you haven’t heard about it). I have 24 I/O with Focusrite Clarett/Clarett+ 3x interfaces which I have paired with the Big Six. It means I have 40 I/O, heaps of preamps, and using inserts/patchbays, many ways I can bring in outboard gear of which I have quite a bit. I also have a Solid State Logic Six mixer which with the Big Six gives me 14 analog stereo busses at mix down…I use the Six as my FX line mixer with all effects generated in the box and push these back into the Big Six using the “SUM INPUT TO MAIN BUSS” function. With this set up I don’t have to print the mix to a track within the DAW, and just use the standard Logic real-time mix down print to an external WAV file. I hope that’s helpful for those seriously considering a purchase.

There is no reason why you could not integrate the 388 with a DAW at the same time. Send signals over to it, run them through that mixer of that time, onto tape and back. Advance tracks to compensate for any delays etc.. Mid Fi is a great way to describe it too. I worked with a mixer of that some period and design and the A3440 reel to reel. I had Dolby C noise reduction on the 4 tracks. That was starting to get into Hi Fi. A level up again from the 388. There certainly is something about that Tascam mixer sound too from that period.

I love analog. Never left it. Worth mentioning that there's a thought process in just the rewind-time that happens, and there's a compulsion to just get it right and not have digital crutches to lean in in post. I love taking care of it too, not a disposable quality. I love the tactile function of having my hands on a real board, no digital visual fireworks to distract me, just level checking and sound. I do like digital mastering as it's cheaper and everything is digital in the end. Digital tries to sound like analog as best it can, analog sounds like analog. There's a soul to it.
