CHARLIE STARR | Single Pickup Guitars & The Southern Rock Sound
Музыка
Charlie Starr and his band Blackberry Smoke are working to keep the Southern Rock sound alive and well. Charlie has a deep understanding of the sounds and traditions that make up the classic guitar sounds of those great bands. In this interview we talk about Charlie's upbringing in Alabama and how he started playing guitar and writing, as well as what it takes to keep a band going in these modern times, his love of single pickup Gibson guitars and how he goes about writing new material.

Charlie should have his own KZread channel. He's great to listen to and probably has incredible insights to share.

Good idea, but the guys kinda busy for the last 15 plus years with like 300 shows a year. But i agree, he’d be fantastic with his own show talking and teaching music.

Blackberry Smoke is the best band to come out in the last 20 years. Great stage show. Always fun!
Blackberry Smoke and Big Wreck are the GREATEST BEST KEPT SECRET in music... The world needs to hear about these bands. Thanks for the video Rhett. IMMEDIATELY picked up my guitar whilst watching this video.
The stereo thing reminds me of what my dad in 1972 to our old gramophone player, it was valve driven and he sacrificed everyone's music in the house for me he, turned it into a tube amp. After about a week he . Went ok, you cant stand in the living room doing this. So he made me a tiny 1 x 12 ax7 amp with a 6 inch speaker with the guts of the old Gramophone player. I still think I had one of the best distorted tones for the early 70's because of that. He would sit and listen to Aqualung with me and try and tune it to get than solo tone on this tiny little unit. He was an electrical genius

So glad Charlie is getting the recognition he deserves. BBS is the hardest working band ever. Being from Atlanta, I've been lucky enough to see them from the beginning. Hell, they'd play the grand opening of a library if it meant getting to play music. Thank you for restoring my faith in music, Charlie.

@@Ken-le9hh Go Steelers! I lived in Fox Chapel back in the early 70's when I was a kid and have been back to visit numerous times over the years. Carnegie of Homestead....beautiful place. What a great venue to see a good band. If I'm not mistaken, Stevie Ray Vaughan played there back in the 80's.
I loved this. Blackberry Smoke is one of my favorite bands. I’m one of the many you guys were talking about who’ve discovered the guitar recently. I’m 43 and I’ve always wanted to play guitar. But thought I didn’t have the talent. Combine my teenage nephew becoming a really good player in his first couple of years playing, my Grandfather passing and leaving me his vintage 59 Gibson LG2, and being stuck at home for so long, I started learning in early 2021. It’s become a passion like I never thought it would. I have no expectations of being a great player. But being able to make music, and especially to be able to play some basic rhythm to Blackberry Smoke songs, has literally changed my life.

Charlie Starr is the reason I now tend to write short catchy songs. Amazing writer and guitarist. Humble and deserving of all the best in his career with Blackberry Smoke!
A good one for sure. Charlie is just such a wholesome individual. We need more Charlies.
Charlie's a gem. Goes from bluegrass to Sabbath to GnR to Black Crowes to Black Keys to Nine Inch Nails. A true Renaissance Man. That Gilmour quote was epic! Gear talk begins at 34:30

Outstanding! Charlie is one of the last guys to come along that has “it”. So talented....like Geddy Lee talented. He plays, sings and writes like no other. Blackberry Smoke is one of my all time favorites.

Blackberry Smoke should be a large headliner.... But thank god they stayed in the smaller venue to keep there sound, tones and talent closer to the audience.... Thanks Rhett for interviewing Charlie!!
I'm so glad you interviewed Charlie Starr. Now I'm going to sit back and listen and learn.🤘
Charlie is so cool and humble. Great conversation, thanks Rhett!
Thanks to you both, Charlie and Rhett. To take the time to do this is a great gift to Blackberry Smoke fans and those about to be!
You hit a homerun this time!!! @CharlieStarr is my favorite for the last 10 yrs...Blackberry Smoke rules!!!
I've seen em' twice , met Charlie and the guys by accident in a back stage hall way after a sound check before a show in Jacksonville . These guys are the real deal and Charlie is one of the greatest writers of our time
Been a fan of Charlie for many years! Awesome musician!!
Awesome that you found Charlie to do this interview with! Thank you!
Life's a little sweeter with some music from BBS. Their music never gets old. Charlie's voice is as smooth as honey🥰🎶🎙🎸 Rock on 🤩✌✌
One of the great singers out there today. Phenomenal voice.
Great show fellas. Charlie, can’t wait to see y’all play again.
Charlie is such a gracious person. Love to hear him give interviews. Love to watch him play and sing.
I have played guitar for years but stopped for a long time. BBS reignited my passion for playing again. Great band
Charlie is a one of kind. My favorite artist. Their shows are so much fun.
Love Blackberry Smoke.... Thank you for the interview!!!
Love Blackberry Smoke!!! Saw them in concert a few years ago, 10 feet from the stage, and one of the absolute best concerts I’ve ever seen!
Man, did I enjoy this. This conversation was like pure pleasure.
Rhett great interview. Love BBS. Charlie is so humble. He is such a great songwriter and guitarist. Love the hooks he put in his music lyrically as well as musically. They have not had a bad album yet. Not to mention seeing them live is always so fun. I have seen them back to back several dates in a row and the setlist is always different and you never know what covers they may throw-in. Thanks again
I always enjoy interviews with Charlie Starr. Thanks for this
Very excited for this one, love our local boys Charlie and BBS. Always a great live show!
Outstanding interview! I’m going to checkout his music right now.
Thanks Rhett, thanks Charlie. Enjoyed the interview. Can't wait for live music to get back to some semblance of normalcy. Have been fortunate to see BBS in both the Tabernacle and the Ryman, both great venues for a great band.
That was a terrific interview. Thank you so much, I really enjoyed all of it and learned a lot.
Rhett... I can’t thank you enough for doing this. Charlie and BBS are one of my favorites and his standard sound of single P-90s in a half stack is just what I love, even though I recently bought a Helix to try and evolve a bit and try stuff out. Another thing he said I really relate to is I have a 16 year old son that tried guitar at 13 and took lessons and seemed to like it, then it was back to skateboards. But about a week ago he came down and grabbed on of mine and disappeared upstairs. Yesterday I heard playing up there and my wife mentioned it. I left the house and she called and said not only was it my 16 year old but my 18 year old was getting in on the action.
great interview - I'm new to listening to Blackberry Smoke and can't get enough. Love This!! from Houston Texas - Southern Rock!!
Glad to see you feature Charlie, BBS is one of the best touring out there. Their covers are great, homage to the bands before them, original songs coming along and their welcoming of other acts on the bill to share the stage is fantastic.
Watched these guys in 2005-06 ( can't really remember) at the big pig jig in Vienna ga for 8$. It was 28° and sleeting rain. Needless to say they were awesome. 2 months later on tour with zz-top and currently rocking the world over again. If you ever get a chance and you like southern rock, then watch these guys. You won't regret it.
Cool interview. Charlie's one of those rare talents who combine raw talent with just plain everyday decency. Makes me appreciate his music even more. Thanks Rhett!
I really love Charlie and Blackberry Smoke, and I really love your channels Rhett, so this was always going to be a winner for me. But it exceded even my high expectations. This is partly because Charlie comes across as such a great and generous guy, but also because it was less of an interview and more of a conversation between two musicians who are in love with music. Joyful. Thank you.
Really enjoyed that! Fun interview
What a great interview! Charlie is a great dude for sure.
Really cool that you interviewed Charlie! He's a good guy. I'm High School friends with Brandon (BBS Keys Player) and have got to meet Charlie a few times. Hell of a guitar player.
Very very impressive Rhett, that was a great interview, love your work and Charlie was fantastic. many thanks from down under.
Thanks for this.. Much appreciated! Quality stuff. ✌🏻
Being from lagrange and hanging out in the local bars and listening to you guys play and to see the awesome band you have become....thanks for being a part of my growing up and the influence y'all had on me to play guitar.....thank you
I’ve met the band, Charlie, and been backstage multiple times, Charlie and the band are one of a kind, super cool. Great interview.
Thx Rhett, really enjoyed it. Thx for sharing.
Great interview! Love those guys!
Great show! Charlie is such a great player and awesome person - love BBS!
Charlie Starr-- what a cool guy. . . thanks for letting us eavesdrop on a fascinating conversation. Rhett; you've got the makings of an excellent interviewer. More, please !
Great interview. I'd love to sit down and have a beer - or several - with Charlie...what a great and humble guy!
Every conversation I have seen with Charlie Starr has been educational and great. His insights are always helpful. He is one of the best artists out there and his band really kicks. Thanks for the great content Rhett and keep it coming.
That was awesome, BlackBerry Smoke is one of my favorites. I grew up playing the southern rock songs along with everything else but when I discovered Blackberry Smoke it was revolutionary for me because I had stepped away from the southern rock and moved down different paths. Anyway, thanks Rhett, as usual great to see you and really great to see you hangin out with Charlie Star. 🎸🤓🎸☮️🇺🇸
Grinnin’ ear to ear this whole interview.
What he said. Outstanding interview Rhett. Well done!
What a great way to start your day with a cup of coffee and Charlie Starr!!! Thanks Rhett and keep these coming.......been watching since you started years ago.
I don't always enjoy songs I hear on the radio but when I do, it's these guys.
Rhett! This was one of my favorite shows. Because of you and Charlie’s background, it felt like I was listening to old friends talks about where I came from. Love you dudes.
Great interview. Rhett does a good job of letting Charlie speak without interrupting, but both he and Charlie Starr are real music and guitar lovers, so it's more like a conversation. I finally got to see BBS live last month, what a great show!
Yessssssssssssss! ! My Fav modern band. Met him in 2018, down to earth humble guy. Cheers 🍻🇨🇦
I could listen to this guy the whole day long. Very nice man indeed and for me as a non native english tongue pretty good to understand. Thanks a lot for this great chat. Cheers from germany.
Fantastic interview.
Love the volume, great job just perfect.
Great conversation. Thanks!
Blackberry Smoke is a fantastic band. They have it all and Charlie is so cool. Thanks Rhett great interview!
What a nice flowing interview! Great job Rhett! I discovered Charlie on recently while looking for guitarists who play single P90 guitars. I'm going to check out some Blackberry Smoke now.
Great interview with my favorite musician ever Charlie Starr! He’s so talented and interesting!!!
Gr8 chat! We loved every minute. Can't wait for BBS to come back to Sweden!
Great interview. Thank you!
Great interview! As someone from Alabama I really connect with the stuff about being from the south.
Awesome job. Great interview
Thanks Rhett! Seein Charlie and hearin him just be himself is just kool! What a true talent! Him & Smoke are legend fur sure. My kids, 5, 6, and 12 (who think they're rock stars), love yur stuff
Great interview. The quality of conversation is way better when the interviewer is a musician and not just an interviewer, it’s a kindred spirit thing. Good wok Rhett and bless you Charlie for your awesome music.
Maybe just because Im such a Blackberry Smoke and Charlie Starr fan but ...that was the finest and most riveting interview I have ever witnessed. Had it all! BBS history Early influences Songwriting strategies Gear tips tricks Road stories +more..! Great job and thank you Rhett for the great questions and interaction ..and thank you Charlie for bring so forthcoming and genuine. Cheers guys! and..p.s. ..gonna give Isbell one more try 'cause of you two
I could watch this for days!✌️
Living in Northern Michigan, it’s nearly impossible to discover new bands without serious effort. One good thing came from Covid-19, I discovered Blackberry Smoke on KZread and became an immediate fan. Charlie frickin’ rocks!
Dude amazing! HUGE Charlie and blackberry fan. Anything you get with Charlie on it, post it! Thanks Rhett, this was great!
Thanks Rhett! Blackberry Smoke is life!
What a great interview. I enjoyed it. Also learned about a band I've never heard of as a Northeaster. Brought up a few of their songs earlier on a pause-break and they have a great sound and good lyrics. Love it.
Great interview! Charlie’s a cool dude to talk with. Great job Rhett as usual
Loved his playing and singing on “Hey, Delilah” at the AXS Tv guitar heroes 3 show! And That’s what turned me in to him for the first time!
Charlie is the man!! Great guy, great band!! Looking forward to June in NJ, hopefully!!
Great interview!
Charlie is cool and loved hearing his thoughts . Kudos to the interviewer I thought this was an excellent interview.
Yes!!! Charlie Starr is absolutely amazing. I have seen BBS now twice, and both time I have blown away by their sound and genuine approach to performing. Once tours are back on, I'll be seeing them again. Thanks @rhettshull for making this interview.
Great job Rhett! Charlie is such a good interview. Once you guys got going, it was awesome.
Thanks so much for keeping southern rock alive and well! Just played some BBS (badly) on my guitar a couple hours ago. This is awesome!
Great interview! My wife and I just went to a Blackberry Smoke Concert in Ormond Beach , FL . They never disappoint!
Charlie is such a killer player. BBS is a fantastic live band. I have seen them multiple times and they kill it every time!!! Good job getting Charlie on the channel.
Did not know Bubba sold him his first electric... Bubba was/is a dear friend, and one hell of a guitarist, all by ear... I remember us figuring out the stereo "amp" trick... good days. Rock on Charlie!!!
Seen them open for ZZ Top in Knoxville in 2016. They were SO LOUD and SO GOOD!

Charlie, you guys BBS, are fantastic to say the least, but I am a 60 yr. old drummer in a cover band "Mama Tryde" in Arkansas, and we love your band big time. I personally, want to say you guys touch my heart. It would be an honor to just meet and talk to you in person, if you had the time. Southern Rock is who we are too! ... WPS.. Charlie Hilton
Love this! Thanks, Rhett!
Such a great interview.
Awesome, Rhett. This was so insightful. And thanks to Charlie.
....great to see Charlie....my excitement when I first heard BBS - was mind blowing and have been in love with the band....waiting to see more from BBS!
So I was jamming with a buddy at his place and he played me BlackBerry Smoke for the first time. Then I caught some of their stuff on you tube. Now I'm gonna buy some of their albums. Thanks Rhett.
Brilliant work mate! I’ve been enjoying your latest videos tremendously!
That was fun...love Southern Rock, but frankly hadn't heard of Charlie Starr. Can't wait to give a listen to their music! Thanks Rhett!
