It's so hard to beat a classic aluminum canoe, I love my old Michi-craft and I have my eye on another! Pool noodles are also great for thwarts and gunnels and they are dirt cheap at the end of summer.

Two questions... how far off the ground should these be mounted? I'm considering putting it on my 8.5 ft tall shed. Second, would you recommend sealing the pine with anything? Thank you for the awesome video!

I always find this behavior fascinating to watch. They can stop on a dime and their ground speed is zero but their airspeed matches the wind exactly. The wind has to be sufficiently strong for them to do it. Many little adjustments of tail and wings are made quickly as if computer controlled. Awesome flight skills! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mike Really enjoyed this video, however I am a bit confused. Didn't you need to rip down the front and floor of the 1 X 10 to fit inside ???? Thanks

  • @bnatural2

Yes indeed. A step I probably should have been more clear about.

Yes Mike..... I have been a carpenter for 47 years.... LOL could not help but notice by the way you have your laps, your front and bottom need to be ripped 1-1/2 inch. Not being disrespectful, in fact, I built three nest boxes today for our yard. Once again, thank you. @@bnatural2

If you’re trying to put this together and having issues, it’s not you. There’s a geometric flaw in the design that’s not mentioned in the video. Since all pieces are made from the same 10” wide board, if the sides of the box are installed on the face of the backplate, then the front door would have to be narrower than 10”. Cut 3/4” off each side of the door. These cuts aren’t shown in the video. Also, the floor of the box will need to be shortened by 3/4” in order for the door to close fully. The design drawing that this is built from also doesn’t mention these additional cuts. With those additional steps, everything goes together correctly.

  • @bnatural2

Yes, the front and floor need to be ripped a little to fit between the sides. It’s not a flaw in the design. I’ve been making the same box for 20 years. I’ve had a lot of great success with them. It was a flaw in me presenting the directions. I should have been more clear on that step. It’s simple to do. Thank you.

Also, I showed a graphic in the video that has the original plan. Following that plan works just fine. But I do mention that I make a couple of modifications for the front to swing open instead of having it full size on the outside of the side walls. I didn’t get into details I just mentioned that the measurements are different for that modification. It’s a simple adjustment, as you mentioned.

Hello, I’m in the process of making an owl box according to your video. I am not a Carpenter in anyway whatsoever. I am finding problems when attaching the front. It seems like it should be cut smaller to fit between the sides. Am I missing anything here?

  • @wallemon06
    @wallemon067 ай бұрын

You are correct. See my comment below regarding the additional cuts that are necessary to make this fit together correctly.

I have a quick question. How far from the bottom is the center of the entrance hole? Is it 9 inches from the bottom as seen in the schematic picture? I only ask because in the picture it shows 9 from the bottom and 3 from the top but that only equals 12. But the front piece is 15.5.

We saw grasshopper sparrows in Katama on the island. There’s a huge field similar to the one at Crane. It’s one of our favorite places to go. It’s a great mix of birds because it’s just yards from the ocean. It used to be called The Farm Institute but it changed hands and is now known as Katama Farm. Have you ever been there?

Hi Mike, Great Video. I am restoring our 1952 13 foot grumman. It's not in as nice of shape yours, It's broken a lot of ice when duck hunting. LOL . I'm going to paint it in a camo pattern. Your sound deadening ideas are great. Is the rubber mat glue down or do you remove it when you have it on the car? Take care, John

Thanks. Getting ready to start similar work on a 17' Grumman Eagle. Wondering if the thwarts will come off easily. Thinking about using pool noodles rather than pipe insulation. Slip on over the thwart so no tape is needed. Should add buoyancy too. What do you think?

I love this subject. I spent 20 years allowing and nurturing natural plants on a small property in Ohio. My yard is alive. While others sprayed and worked for green grass I worked to allow life to thrive and was rewarded many times over. One thing I did every year was allow a large area of Dandelion to flower and go to seed....the Finches loved it.

  • @bnatural2

There is a lot written on this kind of flock behavior. One advantage to staying in large flocks is that there are more eyes to spot predators. It’s difficult for a falcon, for example, to single out one bird. A strength in numbers sort of thing. Additionally, there are also more eyes to find food. As far as their movements in a flock, I can’t begin to understand those dynamics. I just know it is beautiful to watch!
