Building a Nest Box for Eastern Screech Owl
Eastern Screech Owls are fairly common but suitable habitat is always shrinking and there is always strong competition for available nest holes among several species. They easily take to manmade structures like a nest box. Building one is a great way you can help out. And... how cool is it to have an owl nesting in your backyard!? It's easy to do and it can be a fun family activity as well. I've had great success with a project I've been working on for the past two years- building and installing the boxes. My next video will talk about choosing a location and going over all the factors you need to consider. Thank you for watching!

Thank you for a greatly executed video.
Family of Screech Owls (Missouri) living nearby. Young one outside the window, screeching. Or at least trying to. It was hilarious to hear. My brother keeps telling me to take down the old, dead trees. Nope. Birds and other critters live in them.

Good for you! And great news :-)
Hey loved it building it next week end
this is an excellent tutorial video...clear...concise...thank you
Great video, and really nice workshop.
I just built one very similar. Not as clean but it should be a good box. Great work
Very cool, thanks Mike. Think I'll build one of these myself.
Good stuff. Simple build. I like it!

Much appreciated! I hope you get some owl action in one of your boxes!
👍
Thanks for putting this video together. Wondering how to select a site to put the box. What kind of tree, how high up, general habitat, etc. Thanks.

Hopefully I'll have that video ready in a day or two. It should answer all those questions.
Two questions... how far off the ground should these be mounted? I'm considering putting it on my 8.5 ft tall shed. Second, would you recommend sealing the pine with anything? Thank you for the awesome video!
Hi Mike Really enjoyed this video, however I am a bit confused. Didn't you need to rip down the front and floor of the 1 X 10 to fit inside ???? Thanks

Yes indeed. A step I probably should have been more clear about.

Yes Mike..... I have been a carpenter for 47 years.... LOL could not help but notice by the way you have your laps, your front and bottom need to be ripped 1-1/2 inch. Not being disrespectful, in fact, I built three nest boxes today for our yard. Once again, thank you. @@bnatural2
Great video, But what keeps squirrels from using this?

Great question! They can be an issue for sure. My property is loaded with squirrels but I've been lucky with them not bothering with my two boxes. If squirrels have been roosting over the winter, the most important thing is to get it cleaned out in February and put fresh shavings back in it. Sometimes you have to stay diligent with booting them out if they keep trying. They will actually get discouraged with trying and move on if you keep at it. Other people have had success with installing a pole, with a predator guard, near the edge of some woods. A lone tree might work with one too. It just can't be an easy squirrel leaping spot from the crown of another tree.
If you’re trying to put this together and having issues, it’s not you. There’s a geometric flaw in the design that’s not mentioned in the video. Since all pieces are made from the same 10” wide board, if the sides of the box are installed on the face of the backplate, then the front door would have to be narrower than 10”. Cut 3/4” off each side of the door. These cuts aren’t shown in the video. Also, the floor of the box will need to be shortened by 3/4” in order for the door to close fully. The design drawing that this is built from also doesn’t mention these additional cuts. With those additional steps, everything goes together correctly.

Yes, the front and floor need to be ripped a little to fit between the sides. It’s not a flaw in the design. I’ve been making the same box for 20 years. I’ve had a lot of great success with them. It was a flaw in me presenting the directions. I should have been more clear on that step. It’s simple to do. Thank you.

Also, I showed a graphic in the video that has the original plan. Following that plan works just fine. But I do mention that I make a couple of modifications for the front to swing open instead of having it full size on the outside of the side walls. I didn’t get into details I just mentioned that the measurements are different for that modification. It’s a simple adjustment, as you mentioned.
I have a quick question. How far from the bottom is the center of the entrance hole? Is it 9 inches from the bottom as seen in the schematic picture? I only ask because in the picture it shows 9 from the bottom and 3 from the top but that only equals 12. But the front piece is 15.5.
could you put this on the side of a building?
Hello, I’m in the process of making an owl box according to your video. I am not a Carpenter in anyway whatsoever. I am finding problems when attaching the front. It seems like it should be cut smaller to fit between the sides. Am I missing anything here?

You are correct. See my comment below regarding the additional cuts that are necessary to make this fit together correctly.
Have you seen owls in these before
