    Wow, what a sweet ride. I owned a 69 Amx back in 1990. Same set up, built it from ground up with help from a retired mechanic friend at a cost of around $35 g. It was a Swiss cheese of a car full of vdo gaufes, lol. I've had many sixties cars from 67 Chevelle, 70 1/2 burnt orange, split grill camaro, 68, 383 and 69 Chargers R/T. Heck, even a 68 fastback Torino and a 69 cougar. although I wasn't much of a Ford enthusiasts. Now I wanted to be different so Amx it was. Felt good to be different and better to kick ass with that power to weight ratio. .

    That's very useful info , I've seen alot of camshaft / lifter failure in the last few years . Being that flat you could run a roller on that lobe lol . Knock on wood the roller lifter gods has been good to me .

    Would it be possible to use a straight edge and go across 2 journals then see if the slope is present on the lobes? Do you think 3 thousands would be visible under a straight edge, shining a light from behind it? I would imagine that the slopes are going to be all in the same direction? Have you found that the cams that are correct have the high part to the front of the cam or to the back or that its not consistent. Thank You for your work and sharing with the videos!

    0.002"-0.003" ... are you sure? A dressed grinding wheel leaves angle all the way around - at the base circle as well as the nose. Example: I mic'd a known good cam pulled after 3500 miles [heads were changed] and side to side difference was typically 0.0033". But if I measured as shown in this video [or better yet used an inspection plate]... that number gets cut in half, and gauge resolution becomes a problem - need tenths.

  • @dancurtis3425
    @dancurtis34252 ай бұрын

    That gauge goes to .0001 not .001. Each small line is 1/10 of .001 which means that surface is basically flat.

    Try using a .0001 indicator. .001 is showing indicator error. It’s just a guess with a.001 indicator. I speak from experience. 35 years Master Aerospace tool maker.

    That cam was ground in a machine setup to grind a roller cam. Whether it was the setup person, the operator, or whomever at fault, it's obvious this cam was not inspected after being ground. Unfortunately this is all too common with cams that are mass produced. When you buy a cam from smaller, independent cam companies they do check cams, multiple times. And yes, they cost a few bucks more. But you get a far better cam.

    General motors got busted for failure to properly heat treat number 5 exhaust on all of the small block Chevys covered by this recall instigated by the Federal trade commission. So all small block Chevys manufactured from July 1969 if I remember correctly all the way up to January 1982. General motors did this deliberately so the camshaft would go flat anywhere between 75 and 125,000 mi in most cases design failure to induce you to buy a new car

    the lifter is off to one side of the lobe, thats what makes it spin.

  • @dancurtis3425
    @dancurtis34253 ай бұрын

    Not exactly. With the slight slope, it rides more heavily on one side than the other which is what causes the spin

    Crane used to make their cams in Wisconsin and Lunati in Tennessee , has that changed?

  • @dancurtis3425
    @dancurtis34253 ай бұрын

    Crane no longer exists and I am of the understanding that Lunati now buys there cams from a third party, perhaps the same supplier as this one

    What does a good cam measure out at? Can you show a good cam as well? Does the cam lobe measure flat all the way around or just at peak lift? What brand of cam? Lots of questions!

  • @dancurtis3425
    @dancurtis34253 ай бұрын

    here are the specs. We did not need to check the rest of the lobe as this is the highest point of stress on the cam and the lack of slope at this location is the kiss of death when combined with flat lifters with no crown which is the othe half of the equation. who did the camshafts to begin with ?

  • @dancurtis3425

    it is a house brand for an online parts supplier. The same company that makes these cams for the online parts supplier makes cams for most other retailers as well. It is not limited to one brand cam.

    Dan Curtis, I'm dong a 401 now, 11-10-23, having fun building it and learning. What slugs would you recommend? I have too much info to decide currently. The hypereutectic type with 5/64th rings? Im starting to realize a 4032 is probably good enough for my app, not needing the extra % silicon for a daily driver.
