Instead of giving Fréchette the 9.7 she wanted to give her, the Brazilian mistyped her score and gave her an 8.7 instead. As soon as she realised her mistake, the Brazilian judge wanted to correct her score but the official in charge at that time, an American, who probably wanted to favor Brabb-Sprague, would have none of it. Had it not been for that blunder, and the dishonesty of the American official, Fréchette would have won the gold medal. Later, the IOC recognised its mistake and the unfairness of the situation and ended up awarding Sylvie Fréchette the gold medal in an official ceremony in Montreal 16 months later. Bragg-Sprague was still allowed to keep her gold medal though.
