Nekkid Watchmaker

Nekkid Watchmaker

Greetings and a warm welcome to you all.
The mission of The Nekkid Watchmaker is to strip away all the BS and snobbery in watchmaking and to encourage a new generation of watchmakers in to this wonderful art. In essence we are all Nekkid watchmakers.
My name is Joe and I'm a watchmaker specialising in service and restorations. I am a bit late to the youtube party but I thought I would start this channel for any watch lovers out there looking for some help, advice or just a discussion about watches. I have many years at the bench and also handle many watches each day, so I thought it would be a good idea to talk about some of the watches that pass through my hands. I will be doing reviews and tutorials on the subject.

It's so enjoyable seeing a son taking an interest in his father's profession. At 10 years old if he continues to enjoy it, he will be a master at a very young age. 👍

A quick question. Is it possible to repair the fixed strap links on a solid gold 1920's Omega Trench Watch ? It is the cushion shaped watch and one of the strap links which are a permanent part of the case has snapped away from the case edge. The case looks rather thin so I imagine that gold soldering would be difficult.

Back in the 1920's, I think I recall that people started apprenticeships at 14. Seems crazy to us now. Apparently, in Victorian times, most kids worked in cotton mills, chimney sweeps, etc as young as 10 years of age. How times change, it would terrify me now if we were expected to send our young kids out to work. Beautiful to see your little 'uns keeping Daddy company as you repair these beautiful timepieces.

As an everyday grocery getter I think it’s great. I know it’s just preference but that bezel dates the watch to the 90s. I would have considered modding the bezel. Maybe deleting the raise indices. As always great work

This turned out very nicely! I wonder now, the complaint you made at the beginning about the watchband, could that be the reason there was such terrible wear on the back of the case? It should have had the type of band you put on it to keep it from touching skin?

Joe - your videos are always instructive, entertaining and most of all full of humanity. which is in short supply these days. There are many so called watchmakers on the internet who are nothing of the sort, unlike you. They've just invested in very expensive equipment (mandated by manufacturers ?) and been on the right training courses so they get the "approved" stamp from the likes of Omega and Rolex to service their watches and so are able to get spares. They would never be able to resurrect anything like this. It's their business model I guess, so no criticism on that account, and I'm sure there was no value in this one from the point of view of the the watch itself unless it had family emotional connection for someone. I guess your youtube channel is a big plus for you, but you put a lot of time an effort into everything you publish - this watch is worth next to nothing - but your followers will appreciate it. I'm only a few milea away from you, and It's good to know that the JQ still has individuals and companies like you that still demonstrate and support real skills.

Nice job Joe! I did a restoration one one of these a few months ago, brand was Misalla, no calendar though. Same base movement exactly! I had all your problems plus a bent main plate horse shoe shaped pin pallet (fork) none jewel hole, and a bent pin pallet pivot (obviously)! I oiled the main so prong barrel as you did, thanks for the strip down and assembly of it! I like different movements, but not a big fan of low jewel count and pin pallets. Saying that, I’ve got it running well and still have it, it looks cool even if not technically excellent 😁looking forwforward to more different watches, movements, problems and especially fixes! Ta.
