This box is not badly designed but the size of its pans looks like they are made with the sole purpose of ruining the points of our ( rather expensive) travel brushes. This will not happen as long as the paints in the pans are still soft out of the tube but when they dry. I can't see a way to load even the smaller brush with paint without having to scrub the paint with the point of your brush even if you prewet them ( spray them with water) in advance. The bixoux boxes loaded with some extra colours in the middle raw look as a better option to me as you can attach them on the smaller of sketchbooks with a magnetic clip.

Hi Alan. The Cobalt and the Cerulean are supposed to be opaque. Now the Gansai Tambi colours (and probably their imitations) are not made with gum Arabic but with some kind of glue, that's the Japanese recipe of making watercolors. This makes the colors literally stick on the paper but it also creates some serious mixing problems. When you mix such kind of colors you get muddy results. The trick with the paper towel as I have mentioned on other comments on your channel, shows only how much binder the paint contains and not if it contains chalk. What makes the pigment stick to the paper is the binder even if that pigment is loaded with chalk. Good quality gouache paint sticks on the paper although gouache is full of chalk in order to give opaque and mat final results. The pigment left on your paper towel indicates that these colors don't contain an adequate amount of binder in order to stick on the paper you used. BUT ( and pay attention on this) the Gansai colours are not made for painting on western papers, in other words papers with hard sizing on their surface. They are made to paint on Chinese or Japanese type of papers like Washi Kozo and such things that don't have sizing and as such are more absorbent. I assume that these paints get absorbed and stick very well on these types of paper.

Hiii.. thank you for sharing this information. 🙏 Genuine cobalts (PB28, PG50, etc) are usually semi opaque, but not very opaque. The ones that come in this set contain obviously white pigment because they're very opaque. It's understandable because these are hues (imitations of the original cobalts). I am aware that cobalts are on the opaque side, and I need to describe them with emphasis for the review, not that I'm surprised. The term "chalky" has multiple meanings if searched by definition. It could mean it contains chalk and could also mean to appear as "like having chalk" or matte. Chalky as an adjective resembles as if it contains chalk. During the tissue trick, i have mentioned that it will indicate how well the paints adhere on paper. And yes, this measures how balanced the % of binder is present to pigment. Also, as mentioned "can", just can, "can" be an indication of chalkiness. The cleanaing wàter may also be an imdication of chalk contents. Actually, these paints only look like the gansai paints at first because of their glossy appearance on pans and the size of pans. But the moment you use them, they feel more like usual student grade watercolors that include some opaque colors. 😊

@@AllanJayQuesada I have no objection on the quality of these paints. But if they are made with glue instead of gum Arabic then they are probably more suitable for use on Japanese/Chinese type of papers than regular watercolor ones. I assume that it is probably impossible to know what is the binder that are made with. lol

Wow! I have some 60ml tubes of their white gouache (because it's a great white and was a good deal on Amazon) but had no idea they had that size of watercolor! I remember Oto Kano talking about how cheap Holbein watercolor is in Japan, she was not kidding. I miss her, I hope she's ok. Also, LOL, you would take a trip to Japan just to complete your collection, wouldn't you!! 🤣

Yes, it's crazy that there's 60ml of watercolors. It's crazy because we dont normally consume watercolors in volumes like how we do for oils or acrylics, so the 60mls would last a lifetime and reincarnation. 🤣 Yes, been wondering too why Oto Kano hasn't uploaded yet for a while. Hope she's fine. Regarding the Japan trip, actually I just did it on March. Haha. I already completed the 48 60mls and other brands there, too, like Kusakabe and Turners. Can't really find the time to collate all the videos there for me to share and make a Japan Vlog. But I'm really planning to really post this on July for world watercolor month. 😇

Great review, Allan. I love the unique and thorough way you progress through each stage, and the different stages are brilliant. I have not seen anyone provide the kind of side-by-side comparison that you do with so many different brands. My only suggestion, would be to add just a bit more commentary when you get to the most popular brands (for instance, at the end with nearly all of the semi-pro and pro brands). I realize you are wanting to keep the pace up, but it is SO helpful to hear a few more detailed comments/comparisons. So well done...thank you!

Asian brands po like Holbein, Paul Rubens are some pro grades na good and affordable po. Transparency not only depends sa brand. But on the pigment selection. So depende po yun sa kulay (pigment). Kasi kahit Daniel Smith pa or Schmincke pa yan, meron parin sa selection nila ang opaque and semi opaque. This is why in my reviews, i put the black line.. some pigments are most of the time transparent like mga PB15 and PV19. Some pigments are often opaque like PW6, PB28 and PG50, PY35 and PR108. So if transparency ang consideration niyo po, you need to study the pigments and probably handpick your colors.. kasi pag sets, they're usually mixed with some opaque colors

I came across such huge tubes in Kyoto recently but chose granulating Harmony watercolors instead.

Such a little goes a long way. I have three sets and one dupe across them Quin Magenta 🎉 a color that is not bad to have more of. The sets were well thought out and they are my permanent palette. Thanks for the review.

Thanks too. Qor is great and exciting to use. Now, I'm also curious about their new granulating colors. 😊
