    The best way to save money with Schmincke's 45 super-granulation colors, is to go only for their primary equivalents: the Galaxy set of 5, Volcano Yellow, Volcano Red, Forest Green, and Glacier Blue. Basically, you get the equivalents of the cool and warm primaries, and a payne's gray, a purple, and a green. These 9 colors can mix most of the rest of their colors. Price comes at just $63 online as of this writing, compared to hundreds of dollars if you get all their sets. Just mix the right colors, and save!

    Hey Allan! So good to see you. I know this way of swatching is your longtime format, but it would have been nice to see larger swatches for these colors. Granulation happens best when pigments flow across wet paper freely (on a slant), and then are left untouched -- which is easier in bigger swatches. The more you move the paint with your brush, the less they will granulate -- because as they are trying to clump, you are smoothing them back out.

  • @AllanJayQuesada

    @AllanJayQuesada

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's true and I agree. But i cant go away with the format. So I am actually considering of doing a separate swatching and sampling for each of the super granulation set.. to show more of the effect. There I'd probably make bigger swatches. 😊

    I have one set, the tundra, and while they are beautiful they aren't very useful. I wound up putting together a palette of single pigment granulating pigments commonly used in the collection and appreciate it so much more. Not only can you mix similar colors, you can mix a ton of others by simply experimenting, some even more beautiful. You also have the individual pigments to use on their own or in combination with a basic palette. These supergranulating combinations are much better off used as an accent or special effect in a limited area of a painting. One use I did find is in a faux stained glass painting, they are quite lovely as individual panes of glass and the black lines give the needed separation. They also make beautiful backgrounds. They do not mix well, almost everything combines into a murky grey or brown. The two exceptions are the single pigment volcano red and yellow, however the texture of those two is really not pleasant, gummy and gritty.

    100% agree with your comments! Why does Schmincke want to take all my fun away; why would I not want to be able to play with the mix? Schmincke is the Daniel Smith of Europe -- super extra with a bloated line!

Those were my first Schmincke and I am surprised how much work they need to reactivate (in comparaison with D Smith or Rembrandt or Sennelier I own). I put a drop of water on each and it seem to make the pigments separate in the pan. I will have to learn to appreciate them...

    Hello sir!! Thank you for the very informative video, really appreciate that you let us see these paints in action. I just have a small inquiry; I noticed you mentioned PR108 does not granulate in other brands, but I have a Cadmium Red Deep PR108 from holbein that does? and I checked some other brands' Cad. Red (making sure they all used PR108), like M. Graham, and Qor, W&N, Da Vinci through online color charts and those granulate too. I was under the impression that almost all versions of this pigment DO granulate, so I was surprised to find you say otherwise. Do you mind clearing that up?

  • @AllanJayQuesada

    @AllanJayQuesada

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hiii. Thank you Amanda. I appreciate your observation, really. While it's true that PR108 may really granulate, it does not in my opinion usually granulate to the "level" that Schmincke calls "super" granulating. Also, most PR108s that I use are from the warms to mids (Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Scarlet) don't have the granulation I can compare to PR233 or PBr6. In the deeper versions of PR108 like Cadmium Red Deep, the texture is probably more visible as it's a deeper color and is more i contrast with the paper. I have the PR108s in Qor and W&N but only the warm and mid. In Mgraham, i have all the PR108s and theyre beautifully opaque with only very soft granulation making me enticed to use them in portraits. 😊

    It's true that other cads can granulate a bit, although I find it to be a bit different than say the cobalt pigments. It's my belief that Schmincke just puts granulation medium into Cad Red Light and calls it Volcano Red. In other words, we could do it ourselves.

    Please consider locking your white balance on your camera. Every time you move your hand, the colors shift, as the white balance of the camera changes. It's very difficult to understand how a color actually looks like if the WB keeps jumping. Every camera allows you to set and then lock the WB, and even if you shoot with your phone, there are third party video recording apps that can do that (e.g. Filmic Pro).

    I still dont understand why granulation and premade separating colors are so popular right now..... watercolor is known for smooth,transparent, luminous colors. Have a few single pigment colors that granulated is nice to have like ultramarine blue or cobalts, etc. And using themnin mixes to get beautiful, unpredictable effects is awesome and fun. But paying a premium for just a few pigments mixed with other in diff combinations and trying to sale it to us just makes no sense to me! When with about 5 colors added to your palette.....a few you prob already have....you can make any amd all colors you see here....

  • @AllanJayQuesada

    @AllanJayQuesada

    Жыл бұрын

    You are actually right and on point. But the way I see it, the reason why some people patronise these marketed mixes is simply because of 3 things; 1. They are too lazy to mix. 2. They don't want to experiment. 3. They have no idea about pigments and the codes and formula at all. It may seem simple, but to some, it is not. Like baking bread. If mixing the colors we need is the key, we only need Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow and maybe black. If our printers can maximize those 4, we possibly can too. But again, not easy for all.

    Hi. Yes, i purchased all with my own money. most of these are from Jackson's Art in UK. I buy online. They can prove it. If there are instances companies give me paints, i always mention it. And i also have a store of paints here in the Philippines.

    And as i have said in this video, i also re sell these paints by pouring them in pans. So there is nothing impossible here. I am a paint collector myself, and this Schmincke paints aren't even the only ones i have.
