How long does a set last?
@Josh.Vanjani24 күн бұрын
A set will usually last me about six months in the winter and three months in the summer. The gut will usually last longer than the silk basses. Occasionally, you'll get a defective gut string or one that doesn't last as long as the others, usually the high e, but I've had it happen on a B too. You can almost always tell if a string is "off" because there will either be a variation in color or texture. These strings are very susceptible to changes in weather, so I'd recommend keeping the guitar in a properly humidified case when not in use. I got lazy one night last month and left the Ramirez on the stand and woke up to the silk D string breaking in the middle of the night (sounded like something out of a horror movie, especially in the dark). While this set does require more maintenance than nylon, the organic sound quality and depth of feeling you can get out of your music makes it worthwhile. Hope this helps!

Do you have any trouble seeing the black strings? My classical has a black fretboard and I’m thinking that the black strings may be hard to see. I just ordered a set of LaBella 830 folk strings. I figured if it’s good enough for Willie Nelson, it should be good for me. Just hoping I can see the black strings
@Josh.Vanjani26 күн бұрын
Well, the Martin M160 set has clear nylon trebles, not black. Did you mean to comment on my Ernie Ball Black Nylon review? In any case, on that set I didn't have any issue seeing the strings and I likewise had an ebony fingerboard. Interestingly enough, I have a set of LaBella 830 on hand as well, I just keep skipping it over. I'm hoping to find a sort of crossover guitar that I could potentially put them on. Let me know your thoughts on them, because no one else has reviewed them and Willie uses them in a unique way with a pickup system, so it probably won't sound the same for us laypeople, ha ha.

I love this my friend! Those gut strings actually sound AMAZING pushed to the 435hz. Do you know if the lifespan is much affected by the 435 rather than 415? If they still last as long I might have to take the plunge and just not tell my wife how much I paid for strings. 🤣 Love and blessings as always! P.S. Do you know if the silk basses would be most period correct or common from about 1900-1950? The mystery sound I'm kind of seeking out is the Raymond and Carlos Montoya one.
@Josh.Vanjani26 күн бұрын
Thanks, Kris! Good to see you in the comments section again. As for lifespan, I just recently changed the basses after about 6 months, so it seems to have lasted about as long as at 415Hz. I think the trick is to get them up to pitch initially. I started using this set at 432Hz right away, and then it wasn't too much more to go three hertz higher (LOL). A few years ago I did snap a silk string when going from 426Hz to 432Hz, but if you get them there in the beginning you have more of a chance of keeping them there. Yes, silk basses are period correct for pre-1950 strings. Give it a try! The basses are only $15, so you could try the basses and then use even regular nylon strings for trebles; just keep in mind to tune at 435Hz or below.

It's a touchy subject for sure! Segovia playing unamplified in 2000 seat halls was a bit ridiculous. And modern amplification can be remarkably faithful to the original sound. One day I'll try it. I was struck by how easily your seemed to carry it all, Josh -- I would have thought it would be very heavy?
@Josh.VanjaniАй бұрын
Thanks, Steven! The base to the unit is probably between 10 - 15 pounds (4 - 6 Kilos), so around the weight of carrying a duffel bag or suitcase. Travelling with gear can be difficult, but not impossible. I recently went to North Carolina with my guitar hard shell case and propped it up vertically against my suitcase handle when I was on the subway (Underground, as it's known in the UK). I utilized the elevators where possible and took breaks as needed. Sometime I'll take this Bose system out on public transport as a test too, but this is how I carried it in from the car to the library, when I played there in October.

Great information and review it made me wonder what is more important the amp or the microphone you use.
@Josh.VanjaniАй бұрын
Thanks, Todd! Good question. The microphone I used is fairly lower end, so I'd imagine it could only sound better with a high fidelity mic.
@Toddlane43Ай бұрын
@@Josh.Vanjani which would sound better a $100 mic with $1,000 amp or a $1,000 mic with a $100 amp?
@Josh.VanjaniАй бұрын
@@Toddlane43 That's essentially the same question as when people ask me if a $6000 guitar with cheap strings or a cheap guitar with $60 strings will sound better. While expensive strings will most certainly make even a Yamaha C-40 sound better, you'll consistently get better performance out of a luthier made instrument strung up with D'Addario EJ27 student nylon. I'd venture the same is true for amps, that a better quality amp will produce better sound with a cheaper mic.

Thanks, Conrad! Sure, you can definitely use a bass on this system too because it uses the same quarter inch cable. Given the fact that this has a fairly impressive lower end, I'd bet a bass would sound great on this system. You'll have t come over and try it out, ha ha! As for busking, you'd need a power source, but if you were able to plug in somewhere or use portable power, it would work well.

Anytime! Glad you enjoyed!
That is a cool system, it looks versatile. Something like that would be great even for busking. I wonder if it could do other instruments like a bass perhaps
