Dionisio Aguado - Lesson No. 19 (Arr. Pujol) - Gut & Silk Strings - Classical Guitar

Музыка

Aguado’s 19th lesson comes from his method book. Emilio Pujol arranged this theme and several variation on it as part of his own method book. I’m playing gut strings tuned to 435Hz and using nails, like Aguado advocated.

Great job, Josh! Pujol's variations on this theme are challenging (no surprise there haha). You are a brave soul for tuning gut to 435 and playing with nails. Many people did that in times past, though, so no reason why we can't today. It's just that gut is now more expensive and hard to come by for us that it's sad when the strings break haha. I'd love to hear more!

Thanks, Tate! Glad you dropped by, I actually performed this one with you in mind. I remembered you previously saying that Pujol advocated using 435Hz, and although he didn't recommend using nails, Aguado did, so I figured it fit. I've also been playing with no thumb nail, so it's interesting to learn Aguago did that too. I prefer a warmer tone for the bass and find having a thumbnail brings out a brassy sound. Thanks for stopping by and for your continued efforts towards authentic performances.

Thanks, Justin! Yes, I chose to implement rubato and lean into the darker, dramatic side of this piece rather than ripping arpeggios as fast as possible like I did last time. The garage acoustics seemed to compliment this interpretation quite well, though some of the volume dynamics were overwhelmed.

Thanks, Mette! The garage acoustics worked well for this piece because I wanted to achieve a pensive, almost meditative sound and really highlight the emotion. Also, I only used the garage light and I think it almost worked better than when I used external lighting.

Great work Josh! I am really enjoying how you are leaning into tunings other than the standard lately. The combo of the tuning and these strings is giving you a unique approach we don't hear as often these days. Hopefully you plan on doing more this way!

Thanks, Wyatt! Yes indeed, I hope I sound like I came out of the past, minus the vinyl crackle, ha ha. You're spot on, I've been matching the tunings to the time period to try and create an authentic performance. For this one, there was no evidence about which pitch Aguado used (that I found, at least), so I went with what Pujol recommended because he was the arranger. Interestingly, when I first started using alternate tunings four years ago, I was faced with a lot of criticism and pushback; now, folks like Brandon Acker, Rob M., and even Tate Harmann (pinned comment) have done a lot to normalize historical tunings within the community. Thanks for sticking around since then, by the way.

Thanks, Todd! Sure, I can see that. I leaned into the slower, dark elements of the piece this time, utilizing rubato, rather than just ripping into quick arpeggios like last time. Also, it could be that I recorded at night and used only the garage light for lighting; I liked the contrast between the cool color of the wall and the eerily warm glow. So yes, I could see this in a horror movie for sure, perhaps coming off of an AM radio or 78RPM record, ha ha.

I love this my friend! Those gut strings actually sound AMAZING pushed to the 435hz. Do you know if the lifespan is much affected by the 435 rather than 415? If they still last as long I might have to take the plunge and just not tell my wife how much I paid for strings. 🤣 Love and blessings as always! P.S. Do you know if the silk basses would be most period correct or common from about 1900-1950? The mystery sound I'm kind of seeking out is the Raymond and Carlos Montoya one.

Thanks, Kris! Good to see you in the comments section again. As for lifespan, I just recently changed the basses after about 6 months, so it seems to have lasted about as long as at 415Hz. I think the trick is to get them up to pitch initially. I started using this set at 432Hz right away, and then it wasn't too much more to go three hertz higher (LOL). A few years ago I did snap a silk string when going from 426Hz to 432Hz, but if you get them there in the beginning you have more of a chance of keeping them there. Yes, silk basses are period correct for pre-1950 strings. Give it a try! The basses are only $15, so you could try the basses and then use even regular nylon strings for trebles; just keep in mind to tune at 435Hz or below.
