As a Sens fan, I stopped making expectations for this team but with the all changes settled down from last year, I hope this year can be the year they make the playoffs.

Because of the Hawks early connection with Levshunov, I made it a point to watch Michigan State. I thought he was outstanding. Three leagues in three years with what he accomplished in his freshman season was very impressive. And as far as the mistakes go, he drove the offense and constantly had the puck. You're going to make mistakes and they'll be glaring at times. But the collective effort to poo-poo his game in the month or so leading to the draft, was insane. Then on the flip, you got Demidov, who I actually wanted, being anointed the best Russian prospect ever. The guy played in a league scouts couldn't even attend. All the while, absolutely slaying bums in a trash league. He couldn't sniff the KHL and by those clips of him bum-slaying in the MHL, experts have penciled in as a star. We all seen how Bedards flashy tricks worked against men. They didn't. And I'm sorry, but Demidov is not in a Bedard category. Or a Celebrini category for that matter.

As a Capitals fan, I would have preferred Hage or Solberg, but Parascak wasn't a bad pick. I would have liked to have heard about the Russian Kantserov. There is a kid by the name of Savoie that I think is going to the AHL that fans are already endeared to because of his personality and toughness. My favorite drafted player this year is Sacha Boisvert. This kid reminds me of the leadership qualities of Toews or Seabrook. He is one to watch. Vanacker and Spellacy could make the team 3-4 years down the road. Mustard intrigues me too. Kaiser on D is another one you could have mentioned. He was up and down last year between the Hawks and the AHL.

You gotta remember that the other "bad teams" from last year are improving. I think we will end up 5 to 10 in the draft order unless we win the lottery again. Whenyou make this many changes, you still need time to gel as a team. Maybe by Thanksgiving they can gain some consistency.

The Sharks have had huge success with drafting European goalies in their early years. I wish they'd pull that rabbit out of their hat instead of trying to just fill in with stop-gaps and band-aids. It's possible other teams were a bit worried about the drop-off in his offensive production from the MHL (Russia's equivalent to the major-juniors in North America) to the KHL. He was almost exactly a point-a-game in the MHL, but only has 4 goals and a single assist in 39 career KHL games. His draft stock might have been significantly higher had he played for Dynamo St. Petersburg in the VHL (Dynamo Moscow's minor league affiliate), but I don't know the rules for call-ups from the MHL. Perhaps they're like North America's, and a major-junior player is only allowed to play in the top professional league.

What are your thoughts on Jack Thompson? Seems like no one talks about him when mentioning the prospect pool. He was in the AHL all-star game, but what is his potential for the NHL? Could he be a top 4 pairing? He shoots right so that helps avoid the abundance of LHD that the sharks have.

Hey Sebastion, Thanks for the interesting dive into the Sharks cupboard which no longer looks like a bachelor pad cupboard! I have been a Sharks fan since their first play off appearance against the Red Wings back in the day and in all that time we have never really had much in the cupboard until now. In general building a team the old school way from within via draft and trade gives a team the potential to have the Avalanche/Red Wings effect where a very good team seems to keep popping out elite level talent every year. Because once the pipeline is primed regardless of how well the NHL club is doing those prospects keep developing and when one is ready to make the leap to the NHL voila! A new prospect shows up to add to an already strong team. Think those great Sakic led Avalanche teams that then popped out players like Milan Hayduk (sp?) and other high end talents and Detroit after winning the cup retools their roster and along come all these great players led by Lidstrom and once again they are challenging for a cup with an array of European talents leading the charge. This is what I am excited for when I look at the Sharks pipeline filling up from every league around the world. Yes, some prospects may fail of their potential but, others will not. Its like darts at a dartboard. If you take enough shots you will hit a bulls eye eventually. Think Yvgeny Nabokov (7th round pick) Joe Pavelski (7th round pick) and so on. With all those pipelines filling up from every league we are going to see some of those prospects you just detailed fulfill their potential. Remember Joe Sakic a first ballot hall of famer was the 15 over all pick his draft year! How many GMs' were kicking themselves that they passed on one of the best players of his era? Thanks again Sebastion for doing this. Uh....at the risk of being offensive I have to tell you an unrelated story. When I was a kid in high school we had a dog of mixed parentage named Woody who was a trained frisbee dog at 100 lbs. Massively strong, fast enough to match 40 mph when my dad tried to outrun him in our car down the street and just a muscular physique. Woody's arch nemesis on our street was a big golden retriever who lived across the streets named...yep ...Sebastion. All it took to get Woody furious was to just whisper: "Bastion" and Woody would run to our dinning room picture window that afforded a clear view across the street to see if his enemy was in his front yard! Hahaha Woody did not like Sebastion at all but, I am sure Woody would like you just fine so long as we didn't mention your name probably. hahaha Cheers! Peter St. John Clovis, CA

After drafting and not signing 2 goaltenders recently from the CHL (Beaupit and Gaudreau), the Sharks draft strategy for goalies seems like it’s focused on the NCAA and Russian route because of the bigger development windows.
