Backwoods Boys

Backwoods Boys

We (Dale and Shane Barks) have spent most of our lives on a remote northern trapline. We were filmed for Discovery Channel's "Sons of Winter," which followed our family around on our trapline.

Dale has an honours degree in Environmental Biology; a field which offers unique insight into the animal behaviour and ecosystem mechanics that we come into contact with every day while trapping. He has been enjoying life trapping and found employment using his backwoods experience to monitor threatened woodland caribou populations. He is currently completing his masters degree studying Chronic Wasting Disease in deep-boreal whitetails.

Shane is building his construction experience during the summers and guides for the family outfitting business (black bear and whitetail deer) in the spring and summer. He has built Bear Essential Wilderness Adventures (literally, including the hunting lodge) over the past few years and is kind enough to employ his poor secondary-education-seeking brothers.

Beavertail was considered a real delicacy during the mountain man and fur trade era trappers and Old West outdoorsmen of many stripes. But I think this was primarily based on the appetites and physical conditions of those consuming it. For 300 years the peoples of European descent their staple foods were jerky and hardtack.... Jerky has very little fat in it animal fat tends to go rancid and get moldy relatively quickly. As some may not know, hardtack is a type of dense biscuit (British English) or cracker (American English) made from flour, water, and sometimes salt. Interestingly, it cantains no fats or oils of any kind fsince hardtack molds and goes bad quickly if it has oils in it whereas without oils and stored properly has been known to remain fully edible for 25 years. For over 300 years, explorers , traders and others not in cities or on farms depended on hardtack and jerky as their primary foods.. This was true for soldiers of the Napolonic Wars across Europe, likewise for American soldiers between the war for Independence through the Civil War. Poneers on wagontrains and cowboys working the cattle drives depended on hardtack as their main source of calories. Simply getting enough calories was a problem even for farmers and city dwellers, but especially so for all the other previously mentioned groups. Since animal fat is the most concentrated form of calories, very hungry prople often crave fats and oils. I once heard a lecture given by a climber who was a lone survivor of an expedition climbing Mt Everest. They were hit by extended storms early on, that left them stranded i n place, freezing to death, unable to go up or back down to safety. He confessed to getting into the food stores early on and stealing all the tins of lard. He believed the extra calories he got from the lard saved his life, giving his body fuel to stay warm and strength to endure while the other members, basically all died from fatigue and cold. When you're freezing to death and lacking calories to burn, he said pure lard tastes better than any other foods be they meats or sweets... Hence the historic attraction for eating fatty beaver tails.

These pests also lowered the water level in my pond but by digging dozens of holes and bank runs in the pond dams. That means war, I have to eradicate these nuisance critters. But they avoid all my traps so far. Conibears and snares either

All hunters are sadistic psychopaths who use animals to vent their frustrations, inadequcies and anger upon a weaker being, with the exception of those who hunt for pure survival and don't sit there with a big sh*t-eating grin on their face with a dead animal. Hunters try to tell you that they do it for a love of nature or what-not, but if that's the case, they would be a wildlife photographer or hiker, and wouldn't feel the need to end every experience with the act of killing. Hunters are absolutely no diffrent than a psychopath who tortures puppies and kittens before becoming a serial killer; hunters are simply dressed better and use equipment they buy at a store to engage in their depravity. Predators don't require much management by hunting, as they control their own populations and carrying capacity through competition and prey availability. If there's a lack of deer, they'll eat something else. Predators take the sick/weak, which keeps the herds strong, while human hunters go after the biggest/best, which weakens the gene pool. If you are in a blue state, please move to a red state like I did and work hard to pass laws that ban all unnecessary hunting. Help us destroy this archaic, sadistic culture. We have made progress in banning trapping and hunting contests, let's keep up the good work. Humans are the problem and we should give nature more areas for it to be left alone instead of developing every square inch of land. Here is the latest Federal bill that is extremely important is getting passed which will ban killing contests on Federal land. Keep up the pressure!

Nice job to u & mom! Do you guys ever make three ingredient Bannock bread on the trapline? I believe it's actually 4 ingredients with the water! Other than cooking it on the stove/open fire like most trappers do, you can also mix it in a baggie on the trail and form the dough over a stick and prop the stick over the fire to make Stick Bannock. I'm looking forward to trying your bread and Stick Bannock in the Alaskan bush. Keep the vids coming! Thanks!

Married life is very good! Between outfitting this fall for bears and deer, and working on my (Dale) CWD project, we've been keeping busy, which is good but has unfortunately put a dent in our KZread time! We're hoping to remedy that now. That is an excellent dream; there is something very healthy for the body and soul to have a cabin out in the wilderness! Merry Christmas to you as well!
