How do you turn continuous on in the zf. I can’t find it for nothing. Thanks.
you didn't get a prerelease of the Z6 III? I'm waiting for your review
@@brettgoulder5208 hahaha, I did not get one of those unfortunately 😂 I’ll try to get my hands on one! Super happy to hear you are waiting for me to review it though ❤️
Very good video. Loved the photos and the model also did great. I'm looking to buy the Nikon Zf for similar kinds of photos (low light urban portraits) and this is precious information. Would you be interested in doing a similar video but using the camera's auto-focus? I've found only one video with the Nikon Zf + 50mm 1.8 S doing low light portraits.
Thanks for the message and happy to hear my video was helpful! That is a good idea, I don't think I have done that with the Zf, thanks! I will try and do that soon, just busy with my actual photography work at the moment so it might take a little bit to get one.
What lens did you use?
Its kinda just some random Nikon old fifty mm lens I found in Shinjuku and an old camera store. Looking at the lens its a "NIKKOR-S.C Auto 1:1.4 f=50mm" lens if that helps.
Lovely shots, I am considering a 85 for the Nikon. How was the weight overall?
Thanks! Weight with this lens is nothing to worry about. Very light and easy to use for sure!
@@jasonhalaykophotography awesome good to know! Thanks 😊
thanks for your experience. I bought into Nikon Z9 first and grabbed the plena when it came out. Recently I went backwards and bought a D850 and had just picked up a 105 to go with it. I do agree with your findings particular the distance between subject and camera: 135 is less flexible if we want to do whole body shots. 105 makes it much easier while having that compression and bokeh. This is something for people to consider because Plena will be a specialized specialty lens, heavy and big to carry around into the field just for a particular look. What I find myself using Plena mostly for are kids photography. Because they are smaller in size, I dont have to stand back so much and the compression and bokeh makes everything really nice (usually area with children are messy but colourful so melting that background into a candy pop colour canvas is perfect). Meanwhile the 105 gives me an adult "fashion" style look that you see plastered all over malls. Both are great to have if you have the budget and scope of service. I probably will not adapt 105 into Z9 because it will be quite a long lens together with the adapter - D850 is a great B cam to go along and the native mount makes it all sweet to go with 105.
Sounds great! Thanks for the detailed comment.
How often do you need the long end? Did you consider the 24-120 for a single lens solution?
@@Pdubbcooking that would be a nice focal length for sure, if it was f/2.8 and not f/4. A large part of my shooting is fast action in darker areas so the 2.8 is a nice little boost for sure. Outdoor events…that could be a good little option as well! Thanks for the comment!!
@@jasonhalaykophotography I see, so you shoot wide open for the most part?
@@Pdubbcooking generally the conditions of where I’m shooting dictate that I shoot wide open, darker venue, fast action, and I don’t want to raise my ISO too high because even on the Z9 when you get above 4,000ISO I don’t like the noise. In this video I’m shooting outside, but I just left it at 2.8 because it was looking good and working for what I wanted to do, separate my subject from the busy background. Of course as needed I do step down my aperture, but having the option of going to 2.8 when needed verses only being able to shoot at f/4 is more important to me as a professional photographer. Hope that helps.
@@jasonhalaykophotography it does! I shoot mostly outdoor wildlife and have a gap to fill between 70-180 so I’ve been going back and forth.
@@Pdubbcooking I see. Getting a new lens is always a tough decision. And the “nice” ones for wildlife can get VERY expensive. Good luck with your search and your shooting!!
I'm thinking what's inside the red box is what's in focus, but there's a circle around her as well. Mind explaining these focusing options? Nice shots by the way.
@@HenryMullins so the red box is the camera’s AF box, but as I am shooting in manual focus because this is a vintage lens that box actually does nothing here and is more of a distraction than anything. Probably should have just shut that off for simplicity. The circle one comes up when using these old lenses and kinda just shows you the center of the image, pretty sure old film cameras also looked like this when shooting, but I could be mistaken. Happy to hear you liked the shots though!! Thanks! And I’ll make sure to shut of the red box when doing this next time.
Wonderful portraits. This lens is a beast. Not easy to harness. 👍
@@tinshum7412 Thanks!! Yes, it is a beast of a lens, very nice but as you say, not easy to have on a harness for a long time for sure.
Is it better at nailing focus than the original Z 40/2 version..?
I think the difference in the two lenses could just be cometic, but I have not tried the older version so I couldn't say for sure. Never had a problem with focus on this lens though.
May I ask a fast quality comparison with the "old" 70-200 2.8 VRII? Do you recommend to change it and upgrade the lens? 😊
Well I still have an old 70-200 f mount that I am using and still like the quality. I think both lenses are just fine so if you are wanting to improve your image quality only this might not make a massive difference in my opinion.
@@jasonhalaykophotography I see.. but I feel in a difficult position then, because if quality of the new one is fine compared to the "old" one, then it's weight it's just an half.. and I can but the old one and buy the new one with a "small" effort, depending on some factors, but at around 3-400€. So, that's just confusing me.. will I loose something else? Water and dust resistant maybe? Or it can be a pitty to loose the "non-zooming" lens? Today and tomorrow, combining Nital's sale and Amazon prime days, the new 70-180 is going to cost 1099€.. now it's really affordable I think..
@@jasonhalaykophotography Thank's for your reply!
@@070701984 When in this position I tend to try renting the lens for a couple days and seeing how I like it for myself and see if it fits my needs. But that is a pretty good sale price...good luck!!
What lens did you use?
I was using the 40mm f/2 the 85mm 1.8 and I think I used my f mount 105mm 1.4 as well
No Vignetting is a big advantage if you do Panoramas, especially for weddings, environmental portraits and such.

@@bdelfin714 that's crazy you found the exact same one! Great little lens! And thanks!!

@@TopshelfJunior thanks for the sub!!! The Nikon Zf is a great little camera! Loving the images I’m getting out of it❤️
i think you attached the strap in a wrong way. the original strap lugs which came with the camera should first be removed and then install the strap into the strap holes on the camera body. not a big issue just a friendly note❤
Amazing video, that lens looks sweet!
@@hanadojo thanks!! It was just a cheap find at a used camera shop in Shinjuku but really been enjoying using it these days on the Zf!
Thank you, such an inspiration ! Outstanding pictures, lovely lady! What a joy to watch that chill video!
@@sigurdrille9693 thank you sooo much for your amazing comment ❤️❤️❤️
Love this - especially the shots low to the water in the alley! Really cool to see how good the IQ is with vintage manual focus lenses on the ZF. Of all the focus aids (peaking, zooming in, eye detect) which do you use most with manual old lenses like this?
@@japandrew thanks!! Ya, that last alley was great, happy I could find it in the end, haha. For this shoot I was actually just going by feel for the focus. Didn’t really use peaking or zooming in or anything as I didn’t want to kill the flow of the shoot. Didn’t get 100% of the shots, but that’s part of the fun of using old lenses.
Very impressive work… did you use only available light, or did you bring along a speedlight or LED to light her face? In similar circumstances, I’m sure I would have struggled with shaping the light properly to create all those flattering shadows in the final images. I would have definitely also struggled with colour-cast issues, I’m sure. I’d love to see a video talking about your techniques in that regard. The final scene was so dark at first and you’ve even dialled in negative exposure compensation… all this is to say I’m blown away by the final product 🙂🍻
@@canadianwatchguy6768 thank you VERY much for the amazing comment. I was only using the “natural light” available to me, but the 1.4 really lets you push your camera pretty far. That last screen was crazy crazy dark by the time we got there but just did what I could with slowing down the shutter and cranking the ISO. If you were to look closer those shots are a little noisy, but in the end it kind helps the vibe.
@@jasonhalaykophotography super-impressive work and very inspiring. Using the Zf has pushed me to experiment with manual focus lenses for the first time, and the experience has been great. I’ll have to look into some of the vintage Nikkor lenses… the images they can produce look beautiful. Thanks for sharing your work with us!
@@canadianwatchguy6768 thanks for checking out the videos and your amazing comments. Don’t know what it is about the Zf boy shooting with old manual lenses is so fun with it, way batter than on my Z9. @@AlexSinclair wow! Thanks a ton for the nice comment and the subscription. Means a lot!
Excellent photos and composition. Were all those shots at 1.4?
@@MB-dq2gz thanks!! Ya, as it was quite dark in all the locations, especially that last spot, I just kept it at 1.4 to make it easy on myself and keep the ISO lowish
@@jasonhalaykophotography Impressive performance wide open 👍
@@MB-dq2gz especially for a super old second hand lens!
Jeez that guy, your par course athlete, is incredibly agile! Drawn to your vid as i’m considering the ZF as a do a bit of everything camera. Have you found the mix of the PASM lever as well as the dials to be confusing to operate the camera quickly? Do you stay in manual mode? Thanks, Craig
@@craigcarlson4022 ya, those parkour guys are amazing!! Now that I have had the camera a while I’m pretty used to how it works in general, but it can be a little confusing at first for sure. I always shoot manual or aperture priority. Both work great and I’m quite happy with how the camera exposes on aperture priority.

Just wondering why didn't you do this with the Z7II? It gives you more resolution. And nothing was moving very fast here so autofocus is not that important.

Just bought one! I’m an old man and was in NYC when breaking started hitting the clubs (it was on the street long before that) but it’s cool to see the medium some 40 years later especially in Japan! 🔥💪🏽👍🏾
Thanks! The level of breaking these days is crazy compared to where it started, but it is SUPER fun to photograph. And some of the best dancers in the world are in Japan so it makes things even more exciting for me! Good luck with the lens!
Thanks for your video - it is an awesome one. About the point regarding FTZ, many folks have an FTZ (hopefully II) when they switched from the F-mount. So typically that is not an add-on purchase. I understand the point that it can be inconvenient taking the FTZ on or off. However, now that I have a lot of Z lenses and only a couple of F-mount lenses (the Nikon 105mm f/1.4E and the Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF VR), I have a dedicated FTZ II adapter always glued to each of them. Hence I can use both of these like native Z mount lenses.
@@user-mj4pt4vu3h sure, what you say does make sense and would make changing lenses faster and easier, but I don’t want to pay for another couple adapters for lenses I don’t use all that often, and if I was to just leave them on they wouldn’t fit into my compact travel bag so… If that works for you though that’s amazing!
can't relate, i went out of my way to find this crunchy little fella and I'm in love with the lil photos of Japan I've taken with it so far 😊

This is great for when using ND Filters in mid day light!
@@MrDan1509 with being able to shoot up to 1/8000 with the Z9 and 800 output of the Broncolor flashes I have never needed ND filters.
@@jasonhalaykophotography Not all photogs have HSS flash or the money to make them hyper sync after dumping an arm and a leg for a camera body!
@@MrDan1509 for sure, just meant that with the flashes I’m using in the video there really is no need for ND filters. Of course not all can afford these flashes, but they sure do make life easy if you can use them! Good luck with your shooting ❤️❤️
As owner of both 85 1.8 S and 1.2S, and I like the 1.2 so so so much more, actually not becasue I spent more money so I like the 1.2, I owned the 85 1.8 first, but coming from Canon 85 1.2and Sony 85GM, I really don't like the Bokeh I am getting from the 85 1.8 so I bite the bullet and went ahead to sped the extra money on the F1.2 lens, But the 85 1.8 is a great lens for landscaoe, it'ds small and light so I am just keeping it, but I actually use the Zeiss 85 Loxia for landscape most of the time so it will be just matter of time I will eventually get rid of the 1.8S.
As an owner of the 85 1.8S, I really like the sharpness this lens produces, but I am not a fan of its Bokeh, looks pretty harsh and in some case even ugly in my opinion so I normally only use it for landscape and use other lens such as the 105 F1.4, 85 F1.4G and even my old 105 F2 DC. and recently also picked up a 85 1.2S. i consider the 85 F1.8 the worse portrait lens among them.
Nice one Jason. I'm switching over to the GFX 100ii soon for some "Ninja Boom" stuff and just saw your video while doing some research. - Matt
Hey! That’s amazing you found my video. I hope it was helpful for you. Good luck with the Ninja Boom stuff!
I guess the 105 is easier to get more creative angle since it is wider. 135 is longer, more restrictive when used in closed space
@@hendrikmintarno ya, you would be correct. If you have the space the 135 is an AMAZING lens though.
Very well and interesting movie. Indoor low light could of been interesting compression . Thank you
Thanks! Doing a shoot at night would be great with this lens as well for sure, both the 1.2 and 1.8 are great for this.
I loved this lens, the look, the feel(not so much the price lol) I bought it but returned it. Mostly I didnt like the distortion in the corners, coming from a traditional fisheye i prefer that look in my photos. I wish Nikon/ someone would make a quality fisheye for Zmount. Currently using a TT Artisans 11mm. *wear a helmet haha
Ya, would LOVE a nice little Z mount fisheye with AF. I would buy that in 5seconds for sure. But the zoom on this was super helpful as well, so hard to decided, haha. And ya, getting a helmet is a good idea, hahaha!
I just got a Z8 and I’m seeing banding on my pics using HSS with godox ad400pro flashes. Such a shame since i thought it would be a great camera for me
Sorry to hear that. I see a lot of people here complaining about Godox not working well or as intended. Are you sure your setting are correct? Where you select your flash sync speed in the menu, maybe that is not set properly?
Good insights thanks
Thank you for checking out the video! Much appreciated.
I went through the dilemma of getting this or the 14-30mm F4 S lens. After trying them side by side, I could only conclude that there was only a very minor contrast improvement in the 14-24mm f2.8 and that was easily fixed in post. I guess for the club scene stuff you are shooting there, the f2.8 makes more sense. My primary use is tripod mounted real estate stuff, so brightness is not really relevant. But, also having moved from the F mount 14-24mm f2.8 absolute physical beast, I just love the small and compact nature of the 14-30mm, plus you get that little bit of extra reach at the long end, which does make it more useable and that's before we even start talking price.... Interesting vid Jason, thanks!
Ya, where I was shooting in the clubs the 2.8 is a real necessity, especially since I am shooting at such a high shutter speed as well. Happy to hear you were able to get something that was best for your needs though. Good luck with your shooting!
What an incredible atmosphere to shoot in. Certainly a lens to consider if these are the results. Love the shots.
