  I always assumed the grooves were like the blood groove in sword. To efficiently keep the blood moving in a waterfall like fashion and not inhibit the meat grinder from claiming more victims.

  Escalators are meant for walking on so you can get from one point to another faster. Same with moving sidewalks. MOVE OUT OF THE WAY IF YOURE JUST GONNA STAND THERE.
