If you look over my videos you will see that I still use this filter today. Well over a decade later nothing has changed. You will never have water chemistry issues with this filter as it uses stone. Which is exactly what's in peoples ponds. Rocks and stone. It Adds a place for all the beneficial bacteria to grow. Take a look at my latest videos to see the pond quality. I'm way overstocked. I have NEVER worried about water chemistry. People go nuts over trying to chase something that's really not easy to control. If you have poor water chemistry problems its 100% a root cause of bad filtration and poor anaerobic bacteria growth. You need tons of Bio filtration. So put in a huge bog filter, or build a sand and gravel filter. Nothing good happens fast in a pond.

Mesh size will always determine the materials you can get out. In this case I used a large hole mesh bag just for rocks and large materials. Never too heavy to lift out. This would be way more efficient with a large air pump. I want to try it with high volume aquarium pump instead of an air compressor next. Don't need air pressure but rather more air volume.

Hi, so you said you have a gradient of gravel grit size going through your gravel filter... When you clean it by blasting air through it does this not mix the gravel grit sizes together? How do you stop that from happening?
@RobsKoiPond3 жыл бұрын
Because you're only blowing enough air through the filter to boil the crushed granite (chicken grit) if you get some kind of high powered blower it'll mix and drop to the bottom of the filter. But the leaf blower shop vac I use doesn't do it. Easy fix if it does. Add a ball valve to the inlet pipe and restrict airflow.

So you made a sand filter upside down? Never would have thought of that. flowing the water slow enough that it doesn't mobilize the filter particles. So when you inject air to mobilize the fishwaste for backwash the larger particles stay lower. Does that depend on the specific flowrate? I would think not enough air you'd get the larger gravel not moving and too much air without tapering the flowrate at the end you'd get the gravel locking in place further up, not having a chance to seperate from the sand.
