If your car does not have a knock sensor and you run regular in it and it calls for premium you can damage the engine. The higher octane stops preignition in high compression engines, if the knock sensor hears a knock it will retard the timing to stop the preignition. STOP STARTING SENTENCES WITH "SO"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@dzim88222 жыл бұрын
You never talked about the actual problem with running 87in a car tuned for 91. If you use regular, it can cause the fuel to explode when the piston is traveling upward still. So it is trying to push the piston down while it is still moving up. This is called pre-ignition and can cause engine damage. In modern cars, though, there is a knock sensor which will tell the computer to retard the timing, thus preventing pre-ignition. But when you retard the timing, it loses power and maybe some gas mileage. You didn't go over any of this.
@falcorthewonderdog27582 жыл бұрын
Actually the octane rating has nothing to do with spark plugs or how much energy you need to create a combustion event. Octane is a value of the amount of heat and compression a gasoline vapor can withstand before it ignites from the heat and pressure. This is called PREIGNITION. A low octane number indicates a fuel that has less tolerance to heat and compression and will PRE IGNITE above a certain level. A higher octane number like 93 indicates a fuel that will resist preignition at higher compression ratios. That's all it is folks. You get the same amount of energy from either high or low octane fuel. Higher octane fuels are recommended for engines designed for performance because these engines are high compression. Example my Subaru 3.0 litre H6 engine runs 10.9 compression ratio A standard Subaru 2.5 litee H4 engine is closer to 9.0 to one. The 3.0 litre requires premium gas for good gas mileage. Close to 30 mpg. The 2.5 H4 gets about the same mileage but the 4 cylinder lacks the power of the 6.
@rolliemoon50822 жыл бұрын
That’s what I thought. Or at least been told. I think a good way to explain it is in relation to the air as well. I have gotten by with no problems with lower octane fuel at higher elevations because the air pressure is lower than at sea level. That is also why you can get 85 octane fuel in areas in higher elevations.
