I’ve been listening to the menu music of this game in my study/work playlist for 10 years and this is my first time ever seeing the actual game. It fits so perfectly

I know this was a while ago, but at 58:53 you say you can't kill them. From memory, you can push the delete key to scuttle troops. Used to do it all the time.

This game was so mind-blowing to 4-year-old me it gave me an epileptic seizure while I watched my dad played it lol. One of my earliest memories is watching him do the disguise section with the little robot you hop into. My dad kept the name of this game hidden from me for decades, thinking I'd die or something if I played/watched it again, but I've had little snippets of this game running through my mind ever since. I stumbled upon a different KZread video about this game only a few years ago, and that was how I rediscovered MDK. I recognised it instantly from the thumbnail alone-- that's how deeply ingrained it is in my noggin. Sounds like I'll have fun trying to get this to run on my current hardware, but I'll have to play through this game myself sometime. I've only ever watched my dad playing it in the late 90s, and a few videos on the subject!

I can't believe I'm still learning things about these games that I played into the absolute dirt when I was younger. I would level in the last lighthouse/final summon cave at night to help me fall asleep even though I had no reason to get any stronger after finishing the games, lol. I thought the affinity increase after using a summon in battle was permanent and cumulative so I just kept summoning things thinking I was maxing my characters. Woke up with the GBA stuck to my face and music blaring in my ear quite often. Good times. Great video!

9:07 aww don't shot the Barkhang monks man, they're bros. Also, when my family first played this on PlayStation we spent years not knowing you could save anywhere, because the game only prompts you to save when you finished a level. We started every level from the beginning if we died. Trained on the 8 and 16-bit eras, we simply assumed that the game was simply that unforgiving. I only later discovered that you could save anywhere, buried in the menu, playing it on PS2 - and my parents assumed at first that somehow it was a feature of playing it on the new hardware.

A checkpoint system designed to be frustrating? One of those usual Dark souls comparisons would be appropriate here. "Failure doesnt mean restart at the bit you failed at, it means restart the long journey to get to the bit you are going to fail at." Literally bonfires. You should replay Dark Souls on this channel and critic it the same way as the other games, trying to be objective and being open to the idea it may very well not be as good as you (or everyone) think it is.

I remember this game fondly because of all the reasons you stated. Not being a horribly designed assault on my senses, like those insanely bad Five nights at Freddy games (which to this date I cannot for the life of me understand how they are even remotely liked). The first Amnesia was absolutely great and deeply, truly horrifying. The second however, did almost everything wrong, what the first did right. It was such a hot mess of a garbage pile of design. And the most laughable attempt at being scary I haver ever seen. It felt like an accidentaly comedic parody of the first game. Like how the monsters where just shown instantly, removing the effect of the unknown instantly (also showing they are just cute pig men). And how you could cheese them by accident with almost every step you took, making them feel like a slap stick comedy routine.

LoB is just not thought through. some of the enemies have so much health, that even with perfect gear and spells, you need to pound on them for 30+ minutes.

The Adrenaline system sounds like a fancy take on the typical arcade timer (kill enemies to add time to the clock, get bonuses for finishing with a lot of extra time, etc.), and that can be quite fun under the right circumstances (see: Resident Evil Mercenaries/Raid Mode), but can be quite tricky to balance in a game that also includes significant rewards for exploration and discovery. I imagine the devs wanted to use it as a way to increase replay value (having the player inevitably fail during the first few runs, but gradually learn the maps, the secrets, and the most efficient paths over time), but with the unintended penalty of massive load times, that plan clearly didn't work out. If anything, perhaps they could have saved the Adrenaline system for a separate time-attack mode.

It's still unnerving and really sinister. I think the crude graphics of the original 4 games lend well to that feeling as the games age with time. The newer games can recreate this but should try something totally different like PT.
