Hi, I'm JD and I moved from Alaska to central Portugal after buying a house for $15,000 near Coimbra. It was livable, but over 70 years old and had sat empty for many years and in need of some restoration and modernizing.
Subscribe to follow along on the journey restoring and renovating this wonderful little cheap old house.

Interesting house upgrading thanks!
Thanks for this video. It’s great to see your progress. Do you envision yourself living there part of the year only or full time? Do you have friends in the area? Do you have hobbies? Good luck in all your efforts.
House is looking good dude! Glad you're getting out and about too.
This room has a damp problem on that part of the wall, which cannot be solved by painting. You must first remove the dampness and then paint, otherwise the paint will separate from the wall after a short while. And it is not good for health either.
Thanks for showing the paint chunks coming off. It's oddly satisfying.
On the 4th of July, Coimbra's municipal holiday, the city's patron saint (Raínha Santa Isabel) is celebrated.
Great to see an 'easy' fix for the walls, love the way that paint peeled off on chunks! ❤ n best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪
Great progress, good to see you
Maybe shek your gutters the wall gets wet 😇
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you JD 🙏 good work 👍😁.
Looking good! I think whitewash is the way to go on these walls rather than paint. The paint spalled off because it does not 'breathe'. So moisture got trapped between the conventional paint and the plaster. Trapped moisture caused the spalling. I like your plans for the room. You may want to put a few finishing nails through the face of the ceiling panels to flatten the sagging areas. Finish nails won't be visible after a coat of paint. It will be fun to see the wood beneath the brown paint. Best of luck! :)
Keep up the good work!
Not sure what you found for the woodworms, but apparently vinegar will cause them to crawl out. On the alkaline side, I know that Simple Green will kill bugs and disolve them. When I was a barber, an aircraft carrier came back and everyone pretty much had lice. We were checking people on the sidewalk before letting them in! Anyway, the inspector told us to use it when we ran out of Barbercide.
It seems that you are determined to restore the house without changing it much. There are some things that I would completely renovate. The electrical installation is one of them. Those cables are very old and that is dangerous. Especially if you have to leave the house closed for a while due to work... Good luck and enjoy the Portuguese summer.
What a gem of a cottage ! I suppose due to heat you are keeping shutters closed. Love those doors, wooden floor will look beautiful once varnished. Will you use the small room as a dressing room? I too had those Victorian strip ceilings. Underneath were beams and boards. So think about that as you have beastly woodworm in the ceiling and fascia boards and may rather remove them. Thanks for the walkabout!
lol no it has a broken window thats why the shutters are closed
Always a joy!
Great headway and lovely walk!!! ❤ XXX
I use those gliders to move my furniture, really works well, especially on carpet.😊
I can't wait to see you fix the doors! I love old doors and fixing them 😁 The wall looks much better!
Nice job. Hope you enjoy you Summer, take your time. See you on the next one.
I love the bead board ceiling.❤

The most important thing is the roof. Are you worked on the roof? Good wishes from hambourg.
Perharps the humidity in the wall came from the ground.?
👍
Amazing progress! The house is going to be so lovely. Well Done!
PS: hard to hear your voice over the music. Great video and interesting to see how you restore your house 🙂
Those slider things are great!
Another great video ! are you going to put skirting boards in ?
I think what you were peeling off the wall (you referred to it as paint) was the top coat of the plaster. The bigger issue is the incursion of moisture that caused all that damage. Have you looked into that and corrected the problem? What's on the other side of that wall?
I know nothing about plaster myself, but I watch other channels that are restoring old stone buildings. Please check out about water damage in stone buildings. I don’t want you to have todo double work. Keep up the good work, wishing you all success.
no its paint my house did the same thing. Where he applied what was left of the whitewash looks like it was a concrete patch job and someone used regular paint after their repair you can not paint adobe, plaster, gypsum block ,etc it will crack and come off in huge chunks like that
Is the wall suffering from rising damp?
I wondered if that was the issue
Great job JD! Ciao from Italy
Another great video. Thanks again.

Would you consider doing a new tour of the house? It’s been so long I can barely remember what it looks like. Room looks great!
It's pretty crowded with stuff right now so I might have to wait til I get the next room finished so I can move things around
