Turns 15 years old today! Still the best movie of 2008 Christopher Nolan has managed to make a superior follow-up to Batman Begins rebooting the Caped Crusader making it more dark and gritty with a theme of fear escalating It manages to go further with deeper intensity than previous Batman films being a political allegory Lots of themes, metaphors, and morals here; should a city idolize a masked vigilante?, is democracy still needed or do we put it aside for one person to protect the citizens?, you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain, do the ends justify the means?, some men aren't looking for anything logical they just wanna watch the world burn, there is no black or white the only true morality is chance, even the self-appointed hero can fulfill the fantasy crossing the line, deep down is everyone as ugly as the rest?, we can’t make our own luck, maybe the line between heroes and villains isn’t as distinct It also makes a very interesting crime saga with the titular character doing some actual detective work Keep in mind though you're on the edge of your seat glued to everything that's happening and most of what happens here isn't all happy-go-lucky, this really isn't a kids movie as it's way more grown up in nature than other Batman outings The plot itself makes little sense given the larger interworkings of how it plays out It's also long making it tiring for some but so many things remain consistently engaging and the conversations are compelling despite everyone analyzing everything The late Heath Ledger as The Joker is very scary; not only does he embody the character but he perfects it as the inevitable consequence of a masked vigilante It's probably due to the fact that he encompasses every other incarnation from other mediums: the comic, the cartoon, the Jack Nicholson performance heck, there's even a bit of Caesar Romero in there He's the perfect foil for Batman equated as an "agent of chaos" and seeing if he’s incorruptible being an unstoppable force meets an immovable object, we know everything about Batman but so little about this Joker which makes him more fascinating and threatening Batman is looking for someone to take the mantle as he doesn't want to do this job forever, he might have limits and he's whatever Gotham needs him to be Nolan makes everything grander on the scale from action to effects to even the moral dilemmas being more politically relevant A much more memorable score here by Hans Zimmer The suit is even improved on making it slicker and more mobile for the character to easily move about as well as the gadgets more utilized like spy equipment from sonar to the Batpod motorcycle, the iconography comes off less silly Threats have evolved from terrorism to technology and homegrown tyranny itself; it's true a population filled with civilized people can easily turn on one another making it all fall apart, everyone loses their minds too when it comes to a pre-ordained attack on a politican plus the invasion of privacy is a huge cost to us in order to track down a threat going back to wiretapping under the Bush administration next to the NSA's Terrorist Surveillance Program affecting public discourse The ending is also very bold for Nolan to do having our heroes making the ultimate sacrifice to save their city This ultimately remains a very grown-up superhero movie forever changing the genre showing it can be taken seriously

An unnamed engineer quits his job at a chemical company to become a stand-up comedian, only to fail miserably. Desperate to support his pregnant wife, he agrees to guide two criminals through the chemical plant where he previously worked so that they can rob the playing card company next to it. The police inform him that his wife and unborn child have died in a household accident. Grief-stricken, the engineer tries to withdraw from the plan, but the criminals strong-arm him into keeping his commitment. At the plant, the criminals encounter security personnel, a shootout ensues, and the two criminals are killed. The engineer is confronted by Batman. Terrified, he jumps into the chemical plant's waste pound lock to escape and is swept through a pipe leading outside. He discovers to his horror that the chemicals have permanently bleached his skin chalk-white, stained his lips red and dyed his hair green. His disfigurement, compounded with the loss of his family, drives him completely insane and marks the birth of the Joker.

i didnt live to see the eighties. batman entered my life through video games, watching my dad play the arkham games and teaming up with him in lego batman on the playstation 2. doesn't matter how you like batman and what your favorite rendition is, all that matters is that it's a multi-generational icon that has improved the lives of many. hold on to whatever batman you love the most, because there is no right or wrong batman.

I'm tempted to say the Phantasm one, not because of 90s nostalgia-bias, but because it was part of BTAS, it had Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill in it, and a female main villain with a very complexed story who was a threat and a badass but ultimately not truly evil on the inside (Plus Phantasm is an underrated villainess too)

Two things, Batman is very batass! Ya get it?! Also my first favorite Batman movie is The Dark Knight and my second is Batman Begins. The Dark Knight Rises is just a big ripoff of The Avengers 1.

That's the cool thing about The Joker is, as long as they can portray some kind of crazy maniac, then they can do the Joker because he has so many personalities. It's interesting to me to see who plays him in their perspective versions.

This is what batman is meant to be a symbol to inspire people not a campy comical hero, this batman was meant to have a beginning, middle & end not be batman forever because this trilogy takes place in real life. I watch this trilogy all the time,I can't stop watching them because there SO GOOD, it makes makes the marvel world look like a cartoon. Nolan said in 2012 "For me comic book movies have become too much, we'll shoot a film that looks like the pages of a comic book, I wanna make a real film", Nolan was smart to do that, that's why so many people love batman & it will continue for generations.

Dark Knight Rises was an insult. It was almost as bad as the Clooney Bullshit. They go from rubber nipples to a sore throat. Does nobody else want to punch Nolan in his vagina? He had a decent thing going until he rushed and molested his third turd everyone else calls a masterpiece. People actually clapped in the theater. They should all clap themselves across the face.

For all users to the people who are living, in this generation need to know something I grew up in the 80's. I enjoy this, "Batman trilogy" the first two Batman movies made history and told a story everytime I come on to watch it all I see is arguing about how much the ones back from 1989 and 1992 are horrible. I need to tell you something these viewers are Nolan fans and those individuals did not live to see the 80's you don't know anything so shut up.

ok makes more sense now lol. anyway my list is almost completely inverted. the dark knight returns parts 1 and 2 in my opinion are the best batman films. also, i like all the animated ones you mentioned more then the nolan trilogy (even tho he is my favorite director) the main problems i have with that trilogy is there is not enough detective mode. in fact there is none. also, batman didnt need to take the fall for dent
