Thanks for the info. Worked perfectly. A little tricky with the timing as you pointed out but it gets you there. So many people are held captive by dealerships and auto manufacturers after purchasing their automobiles for maintenance they can otherwise perform themselves for much better value and know that it's done correctly. My wife has taken her vehicle to the dealer for oil changes and they didn't even bother actually doing the service but charged anyway. After checking the oil after the oil change and noticing there was no oil on the dipstick I did the oil change myself. The engine was 5 quarts low and oil was extremely black. Had paid for many oil changes but the oil filter and oil plug looked as though it had never had a wrench on it. Makes me wonder about all the other services paid for that probably was never done under the warranty or extended warranty. Do the work yourself and know it's done correctly. I can't stand car manufacturers that hold you captive to their services and rates. Many don't realize that there are laws that allow you to do the maintenance yourself despite what the dealer tells you that require you to have them do the service or the warranty is voided. Completely false. The dealer or car manufacturer must pay the complete cost of the service as part of the stipulation in the proposed false statement of coverage if performing the service yourself or by others voids the supposed warranty. In the United States it is called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Don't let the dealer swindle you into the overinflated service warranty when you can do the service maintenance yourself or have a reputable mechanic shop do the same.

If you are changing the filter for the first time there will be 2 spring clips, one on each end of the filter to housing. If they dont shoot off into space you can either re-install them after new filter is installed or leave them off.

Not as easy at it looks. My 2015 E coupe had the 2 metal clips mentioned in a comment below. One on each end. The one on the far end is really difficult to remove and replace as there is only about an inch of space to work in and no way of seeing what you are doing. The filter must be completely in especially on both ends for the slide to connect properly. The filter is in a really awkward position to be comfortable working on it. All in all, I think it's worth the $100 or so to have the dealer or professional service tech replace it and save your back and sanity!

  • @syrarax

    B. B. Done this today on a 2013 e220. Everything you said and more. The filters come in different shapes so even a few mm of difference either way will give you a REALLY hard time. Do you know if the cover tray that you put back on has clips at the back to hold it up in place? Or is it held in place by simply being wedged behind the surround plastic and the three screws?
