I saw this island advertised for sale. I was intrigued to see photos from the top, but there aren't many. Turns out, probably because it's actually kinda hard to get up 😅 Apparently the "caves" are from mining activity, but so far I haven't found more detailed information. Nice little phantasy of building a little cottage from self-quarried stone and living off grid. Though the proximity to the road bridge is letting it down a bit, and I guess as seen in the video, it is fairly frequently visited.

I've been looking over Google Earth and identified several spots. Some I've been to and some just look interesting. The relative legality of each is largely unknown to me. There is Brooks Island off Richmond. It might be bad because of being a wildlife location. There are many island separated by sloughs in the delta. Some are only accessible by water. There are 2 free ferry boats which are open to cars. The Sacramento Northern Railroad ran from a Train Ferry across form Antioch/Pittsburg up to Rio Vista Junction. Black Diamond Regional Park south of Antioch has a complex geography with many hidden spots. There are old vents and other entrances scattered all over. There were 3 railroads and 5 Ghost Towns. They mined coal and special sand. To the south of that Mount Diablo has an interesting history and is really big. There are many hidden valleys and ponds. Chase Pond, Hidden Pond and Frog Pond are some. In the south bay there are many islands. A Ghost town is at Drawbridge on Station Island. It is forbidden. You can see it from Amtrak. Out in the bay between the San Mateo and Dumbarton Bridges is a sunken ship called the USS Thompson.

The Paulinskill viaduct was also constructed that year and is much taller. I think you might be mixed up with it. That said I've been to both, they look similar and are both amazing to explore!

Newton Creek, one of the most polluted waterways on the planet, enters the East River just below that island. I grew up in Brooklyn not too far from there. I left as soon as I could, and have run rivers and camped in beautiful places all over the world. I live in Teton County Wyoming. And you come there to camp? Interesting. "Psittacosis (also known as ornithosis) is a disease caused by the bacterium Chlamydia psittaci, carried by birds. Humans most commonly catch the disease by inhaling dust containing feathers, secretions and droppings from infected birds."

Lmao this is insane. My favorite part about NYC is the Empire State trail/bike path which goes all the way to Canada. My father used to bike pack with his friends before there were trails. They ended up being the people who founded the “5 Boro Bike Tour”.

I'll suggest Pollepel Island in the Hudson River. It has the ruins of a faux castle, built by the arms dealer Bannerman. I paddled to it several times in the 1980's, and explored it. That would be an interesting one to camp on I think, and spooky. I never spent the night, myself, and I'm not sure if others have.
