    If you’re a Muslim, regardless of your racial background being Javanese or what. These practices are forbidden in Islam, it’s simple. This is considered as shirk the eating of glass, whipping, things the summoning of jinss. It’s forbidden is Islam and its sad to see Muslims of sg still practicing this.

    We believe that the nourishment children gain from moving their bodies and learning through games and play is significant. The adults also seem to share in the joy, seeing the children’s smiling faces as they engage enthusiastically! We enjoyed this groundbreaking event, while also feeling your identity.☝️✨ Yosh and Iku

    Yea, I remembered the story behind this festival. My mother used to tell us when she is making the bak chang. Two to three days prior to the actual day, my mother will be busy buying the leaves and ingredients. She will wrap the bak changs, cook them and hang them on the bamboo sticks to let the water drip like hanging out the laundry in the kitchen. So the kitchen is a no go zone and the house will be filled with the smell the bak chang leaves. Still clearly remember the fragrance even after all these years especially since my Chinese birthday is one day after the Dumpling Festival so double the joy (bak chang and red egg) 😁

    The neon lights of Chinatown are dazzling, and colorful tuk-tuks speed by. Adult and street musicians create an impromptu symphony, while performers, against the canvas of the city, create an explosion of creativity. Each flame at the food stalls tells the story of culinary artistry. The video footage moves through the chaos, capturing the rhythm of the street. The bustling market, cheerful vendors, and lively customers all come together in a vivid portrayal of Bangkok’s night, a living testament to the city’s undying spirit!☝️✨ Yosh and Iku

    Chinatown Bangkok is always busy at night from Tuesday to Sunday as Monday is compulsory rest day as required by the authorities for street cleaning. There's plenty of street food and restaurant-standard food by the street. There's Michelin starred hawker stalls too but I didn't locate them. Buskers keep the place lively as music drift through the air above the traffic and chatterings. Chinatown Bangkok is very bustling and dazzling! Visited by tourists and locals. I will be sharing a video on a food street in Bangkok that is bustling and almost solely visited by locals. This video will be shared in a couple of weeks while I clear my backlog of overseas videos.

    The always vibrant Waterloo Street seems to be even more lively with the Dumpling Festival Bazaar. In preparation for the Dragon Boat Race, many dumplings are lined up as a tribute to tradition. The video camera captures the shopkeepers diligently explaining their products, and you can feel the essence of your video style in their communication!☝️✨ Yosh and Iku

  • @SingaporeCityWalks
    @SingaporeCityWalks5 күн бұрын

    Thank you Yosh and Iku for your comment. There are so many different flavours of rice dumplings. There's even a difference in the wrappings which I did not know till now. I first asked the young lady to introduce her vegetarian dumplings. On seeing her enthusiasm, I decided to ask the older vendors to introduce theirs. To my surprise, they were so friendly and obliging. So instead of simply showing dumplings all wrapped up and looking similar (except for the coloured strings), this video is able to show the different types of dumplings through the explanation by the vendors. 😀

  • @JimNicholls
    @JimNicholls6 күн бұрын

    Very odd - throwing dumplings in a river to supposedly scare away fish from a dead body (which is not found), somehow turns into a festival of eating dumplings at a specific time. It seemed to be mainly older people buying the dumplings, so maybe this is not a tradition that appeals greatly to younger people. Will you be showing the dragon boat racing?

  • @SingaporeCityWalks
    @SingaporeCityWalks5 күн бұрын

    Qu Yuan was a renowned poet and his suicide was recorded in China's history. So I think the throwing of dumplings to feed the fishes may have some truth in it. This practice of eating rice dumplings and dragon boat racing has survived centuries and is still practiced today. Dragon boat racing has become International events with Western countries taking part. You are right that older folks are the ones buying the dumplings. I hope this tradition will live on. My dragon boat racing video last year was well received. However, this year, I will be travelling in Sichuan and will miss the races in Singapore.

    looks like there are a plethora of flavours of bak chang sold at Waterloo Street including the lotus paste, black pepper chicken and Nyonya pulut hitam changs. it's interesting to feature a rice dumpling wrapped in a fragrant pandan leaf that gives out a pleasant aroma upon boiling.

  • @SingaporeCityWalks
    @SingaporeCityWalks5 күн бұрын

    The selection of Bak Changs at Waterloo Street suits all budgets. From the affordable ones to the more pricey ones. Most of the vendors were happy to be recorded as they understand that this will in some way raise their profile. I have yet to try the bak changs wrapped in pandan leaves and the sweet-salty ones. There are so many types there.

    Mouth watering. I just completed a 3-month walk in Taiwan. It’s turning Japanese. All newer foodcourts are Japanese. For those Chinese who like to travel Japan, may think Taiwan, much much cheaper. Singapore is trying to maintain its Chineseness. Dragon boat festival is very Chinese, a patriotic poet as shown in the walk video. Nyonya dumpling not my favorite but the Bakchang is very good. Chinese in that region make good dumplings.

  • @SingaporeCityWalks

    Wow, 3 months in Taiwan. Where were you during the earthquake? I went there, a week after the earthquake. Saw many Japanese stores there. The Qing Dynasty ceded Taiwan (Formosa) to Japan from 1895 to 1945. So it's not surprising to see many Japanese establishment there.

    @@SingaporeCityWalks We were in Taoyuan during earthquake,quite a shock, buildings damaged in Hualien. Somewhat same as the SF I experienced. About the ‘Japanese things’ even many Taiwanese smart guys don’t understand. I covered temples, traditional markets, street food, underground mall for my wife to shop her dresses. And, the temple festivals! I have been to Taiwan in 1978, saw ‘Republic of China’ in glorious days and now vanishing. Walk video is a great life experience. By walking we get to know the places much much better. Walk the talk. Videos refresh memory as we exercise through the streets. With latest 3axis camera, video while walking is so easy. Past 2 years I covered Msia/Spore, thorough. This year Taiwan, next year mainland including Hong Kong.

    This is a light festival that I look forward to every year. The light installations are very creative and eco friendly. You have described it very well as 'a gallery of innovation and community..." Iwagumi (Japanese rock formation) is Japanese art of aquascape where small rocks are are placed in tanks to form underwater landscaping. In iLight Singapore, they recreated this on land, a few thousand times larger. Walking through this installation gives a sense of awe and mystic. A wonderful creation.

    I like many of the items. These 2 stand out for me. Iwagu - for the uniqueness - giant boulders in the heart of the city. And Kickit Team Tennis - for bringing strangers together to play a spontaneous game of 'tennis'. People pass by, play a game, and move on their way. This is something very lacking in our stressful society.
