Drive Tour (Robert T Kirton [KI5AOK])

Welcome to Drive Tour, a project created by me, Robert Travis Kirton, that shows you various road (especially toll roads) that I travel. It's a similar concept that a few KZread creators use, but I try to make it fun, entertaining and informative.

The concept is basically to make you, the viewer, experience the drive. I add different types of music as part of the experience, similar to if you were sitting in the vehicle listening to something like Spotify. I also narrate on some of the videos, so it's like listening to a driver/tour guide. Fun facts are also displayed on the bottom of the screen as well as GPS location and map information.

Come and visit with me and experience the joy that driving can be.

    Great drive! This might be long comment because of multiple questions so read it carefully: Did you know that Interstate 465 around Indianapolis, Indiana has 9 routes that multiplex it (including future Interstate 69)? Here's the routes all running counterclockwise: Interstate 74 from exit 16 to exit 49 US 31 from exit 2 to exit 41 US 36 from exit 13 to exit 42 US 40 from exit 12 to exit 46 US 52 from exit 25 to exit 47 US 421 from exit 49 to exit 27 Indiana State Road 37 from exit 4 to exit 37 Indiana State Road 67 from exit 8 to exit 42 Future Interstate 69 from exit TBD to exit TBD Have you heard Interstate 515 in Nevada was replaced by Interstate 11 in May 2024? It starts at Arizona state line near Hoover Dam along US 93, then runs south of Boulder City, then runs along former Interstate 515 (US 95/93 still remains intact) until Interstate 15 interchange where it continues as US 95/Interstate 11 until at Kyle Canyon Road interchange where Interstate 11 currently ends. They're now proposing extension to Mercury. What do you think? Have you heard of Brightline West (that owns the Brightline passenger train in Florida) high-speed rail is under construction that will run from Las Vegas, Nevada, and then run on Interstate 15 in the median for most of the length until it stops at Victor Valley, California? They are also considering extending from Victor Valley, California to Palmdale, California. The service should begin in 2028.

  • @ki5aok
    @ki5aokАй бұрын

    Future I-69 around Indianapolis will go from Exit 5 to Exit 37. Interstate 11 is planned to go from Phoenix AZ to Reno NV. The section from Las Vegas to Phoenix is badly needed as there is no existing Interstate connection between those two cities. As for high speed rail from Las Vegas to California, I was not aware of that project. I know that, here is Texas, there has been a push to get high speed rail between Dallas and Houston, but I don't see that happening for at last another 10 years.

    Great drive! Do you problems with your toll tag(s) where it is not read and they sent you invoice/violation mail? I had this happened occasionally when I use E-ZPass, even my license plate is correct so I had to call the toll agency to correct it.

  • @ki5aok
    @ki5aok2 ай бұрын

    It happens occasionally...more so with the EZ-TAG when I'm trying to use it on Grand Parkway (which is TxTag). This improved greatly when I switched over to TollTag (NTTA). Seems like HCTRA and TxDOT don't get along very well. I used to get violation notices from TxDOT because Grand Parkway was not a pay-by-plate system (unlike the other TxDOT toll facilities that were). I think that stemmed from the fact that HCTRA was suppose to manage the tolling part, and HCTRA doesn't do pay-by-plate (at least, not until COVID hit...but that will likely change back once the new toll gantries on the Sam Houston Tollway are opened later this year. However, either HCTRA didn't manage it from the start or dropped when COVID hit, because Grand Parkway (at least the TxDOT segments) do pay-by-plate. If it happens now, I get an invoice from TxTag stating I owe them money. No violations anymore. I remember the one at Morton Ranch Road and 99 Toll. They sent an invoice to me for three tag crossings in a row. Something was wrong with that reader (likely malfunctioning and needed a software reset).

    great video, remember the north dallas north tollway extension turns cashless in late 2010, all ntta toll roads are the same date as the north extension they have to close cash collection to protect traffic on all ntta toll roads. just like from the rayburn tollway to i-35e are built without cash collection

  • @ki5aok
    @ki5aok2 ай бұрын

    Correct. Both NTTA and TxDOT went cashless around the same time (I believe NTTA was first, then TxDOT). HCTRA was the last holdout as they were still collecting tolls through a cash option until COVID hit. Most of their toll roads were already converted to all electronics with the exception of the Sam Houston Tollway (their cash cow). Sam Houston Tollway also the only facility in the HCTRA network of toll roads that has a pay-by-mail option. The others do not allow pay-by-mail. The only sections without a pay-by-mail option is the northeast section (that was built as all electronic as a start) and the Sam Houston Tollway Ship Channel Bridge (as that was converted to all electronic prior to COVID).

    @@WeatherAirCtrl672 So they finally got moving on that electronic gantry project. They had talked for a long time on going all electronic, and they did convert Hardy Toll Road to all electronic before Grand Parkway Segment G opened. All the other roads were either already all electronic (i.e. Westpark) or they had already converted it (i.e. Fort Bend). Sam Houston Tollway was the last one.

    Great drive! Remember I showed you differences between NTHS numbering system in mainland China and the numbering system in the US that I showed you the video? Well mainland China has changed that in 2017 for the auxiliary only to remove the "W", "E", "N", "S" suffix and changed to 4 digit auxiliary numbering. Here's the format and this is for auxiliary only and nothing else. GXXxx where: The first two digit is a primary route, the third digit indicates Spur (联络线), Parallel (并行线), and City Ring (城市环线). The last number is additional 9 auxiliary routes. GXX1x: Spur Expressways - equivalent to US auxiliary Interstate first digit odd number GXX2x: Parallel Expressways GXX0x: City Ring Expressways - equivalent to US auxiliary Interstate first digit even number The exception for this is listed below. G9901 to G9912 - Metropolitan Area Ring (都市圈环线), added in 2022, equivalent to US auxiliary Interstate first digit even number. There's no G99 Expressway but China tried to proposed G99 Taiwan Ring Expressway but it is not reorganized due to political reasons and Taiwan uses their own numbering system. It was canceled in 2017 and was removed off the book in 2022. Facts: The G4218 Ya'an-Yecheng Expressway (auxiliary of G42 Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway) is the world's longest spur expressway in the world at currently at 1,975.508 km (1,227.524 mi). When fully finished, it would be over 4,000 km long (2485+ mi) but this progress has been slowed due to difficulty of building it over the mountains and other terrain steepness. Still, this is longer than any of auxiliary Interstate Highway in the US combined. If you gonna ask why this is a long spur. Because according to China National Highway Network Planning (2013-2030), all prefecture-level capitals and an absolute majority of counties must connect to the NTHS network. This results a lot longer spur expressways than the spur Interstate Highway in the US.

  • @ki5aok
    @ki5aok3 ай бұрын

    That's just too complicated to work with. China needs to simplify. As for that spur route: 1. Any spur route that is over 1,000 miles long needs to be its own route. This looks like a misunderstanding of exactly the function of a spur route. 2. They're having troubles going over the mountain? Have they considered burrowing a tunnel or two? Granted, those aren't cheap to do, but unless they're trying for the world's tallest bridge again (which would be stupid in mountainous terrain), I would do the tunnels.

    Great drive and first! Texas and Florida toll roads are common, but what's different about Florida toll roads compared to Texas toll roads listed below? -Florida uses unified highway shield with the integrated word "TOLL" in black text in yellow background on the top, used to be white text with green background. The exception for this is the Florida's Turnpike and the Extension. Texas as you mentioned uses various marker for toll roads depending who owns them. -The following operators who runs the toll roads in Florida: Florida's Turnpike Enterprise - division of FDOT. Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX), created to replace Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA) in 2014. Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority, owns the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway (State Road 618 and the unsigned State Road 618A for the reversible express lanes). Lee County Miami-Dade Expressway Authority Leon County Public Works Department Osceola County Public Works Department Texas on other hand has bunch of toll road operators so I'm not gonna listed here. It's time consuming. -ETCs: Florida: SunPass (FDOT)*, LewWay (Lee County)**, and E-PASS (CFX)***. Texas: TollTag (NTTA), TxTag (TxDOT), and EZ TAG (HCTRA), all three of them works in OK, KS, and parts of toll roads in FL. Doesn't work in with E-ZPass and that is owned by Central Florida Expressway Authority in Florida. *SunPass works parts of toll roads in Texas (Mini and Pro transponders) and where E-ZPass is accepted. And also in OK and KS. **LeeWay is accepted only in GA, FL, and NC. ***E-PASS works where E-ZPass is accepted with the Uni transponders. -Florida has a toll road that isn't a freeway, the Goldenrod Road Extension (CFX), Orchard Pond Parkway (Leon County Road 0344), a privately built and operated by Leon County Public Works Department, and Osceola Parkway (Osceola County Road 522) operated by Osceola County Public Works Department. Texas has no toll roads that isn't a freeway. -Texas has one toll tunnel, the Addison Airport Toll Tunnel (NTTA) where Florida doesn't have one. What's the same? -2-lane freeway Texas: Grand Parkway (SH 99) Segments H and I-1, SH 49 around Tyler, and southern portion of Chisholm Trail Parkway. Florida: State Road 538 (Poinciana Parkway). -Express lanes, not gonna listed here due to long list. -Toll bridges, not gonna listed here due to long list.

    Unless something has updated since the release of Episode 29 (Dallas-Fort Worth Turnpike - I-30), I think you have some information incorrect. As far as I know, TxDOT and HCTRA is negotiating with Florida for interoperability with TxTag and EZ-Tag. The only one that does interoperability is NTTA's TollTag (they usually do it first, then everyone else follows in two or three years, at least that is how it was with PikePass and the reason I have a TollTag rather than an EZ-Tag). (Update: The Florida SunPass Pro works on the following toll roads in Texas (according to the Sunpass Pro website) : All NTTA toll roads in Dallas and Fort Worth (this includes the Express lanes). All of CTRMA (Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority). This would include Loop 1 Express (not Loop 1 Toll at the north end of Loop 1), 183 Toll Road, 183A Toll Road, 290 Mopac Expressway (I guess I should have noted that on the videos...oops), SH-45 Toll Southern Segment (not the rest of SH45 Toll that creates the eastern loop around Austin), 71 Toll Express Lane. SH550 in Brownsville. SH49 in Tyler. What's not included: SH130 Toll SH45 Toll (all segments owned by TxDOT) All toll roads in Houston (Hardy Toll Road (including the Hardy Toll Road Airport Extension), Sam Houston Tollway, Westpark Tollway (both Harris and Fort Bend County), Grand Parkway (TxDOT and Fort Bend County), Fort Bend Toll Road, Fort Bend Parkway Toll Road, Katy Tollway/I-10 Managed Lanes, 288 Express (both TxDOT and Brazoria County) I would've included the upcoming Hardy Toll Road Downtown Extension, but by the time anyone decides when to actually build it, we should be accepting EZ-Pass. Technically (with exception in the Houston area), all Texas Toll signs look similar, with the white numbers on blue background and the word TOLL in the lower right. The only difference is the logo on the lower left, as it represents the agency who owns the toll road. Each of the regional agencies are operating as political subdivisions under the State of Texas (meaning they are individual entities that are operating under the watch of the state government). Houston is different, as each of the tolling authorities are county owned (i.e. Harris County Toll Road Authority, Montgomery County Toll Road Authority, Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority, Brazoria County Toll Road Authority). Each county can designate their own designs on the signage. Harris County takes a traditional approach and uses the pentagon symbol that is usually used to indicate a county road, with a change of color from blue to purple. Montgomery County and Fort Bend County uses their own custom design, and Brazoria County is currently using the standard Texas Toll sign (I'm sure they'll come up with something later). I should also mention that none of the Texas tags work on anything ran by the Central Florida Expressway Authority. Apparently, NTTA hasn't worked out an interoperability agreement with them yet (and the other two don't have interoperability agreements anywhere in Florida). I have read NTTA is trying to work something out, but if you say they are EZ-Pass, then it may be a while as NTTA would probably want to interoperate the entire EZ-Pass system into the TollTag system. Plus, that would give them a huge advantage over TxTag and EZ-Tag. I don't know about Florida, but if you exclude the toll bridges that separate Texas from Mexico, you have two: Lewis Lake Toll Bridge and the Mountain Creek Toll Bridge, both ran by the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA). The Addison Airport Toll Tunnel (AATT) is a tunnel that allows Keller Springs Road to cross Addison Airport. It basically goes under the runway and taxiway. I've been on every toll road, toll bridge and tunnel in Texas (not including Express lanes) with the following exceptions: Mountain Lake Toll Bridge 360 Toll Road (this was built after I had left Dallas) The Florida's Turnpike (it's Florida's Turnpike, not Florida Turnpike...I've been saying it wrong for over 40 years) was the first toll road in Florida, just like the Dallas-Fort Worth Turnpike was the first toll road in Texas. The Florida orange growers needed a quicker way to get their produce to market, so the co-op donated land and built their own toll road. It was integrated into the Florida state system. I believe the arrangement is that if you are an orange grower and you belong to the orange grower co-op, then you get to use the toll road for free. Everyone else must pay (with the obvious exception to emergency personnel on duty). Did you know that Oklahoma has a special law enforcement company (company as in a platoon as opposed to a business) that enforces the law on their toll roads only? I know in Houston, the Constable offices will work each toll road, but I have seen Harris County Sheriff Department work it as well. Houston Police and Texas DPS cannot perform traffic monitoring and enforcement on the county toll roads. Grand Parkway can be monitored and enforced by TxDOT on TxDOT's segments.

    Great drive and first! I already mentioned that about E-ZPass that I got from Massachusetts (MassDOT). What if I tell you that I also signed up for E-PASS issued by Central Florida Expressway Authority and have transporter shipped to here in Tennessee? E-PASS has the normal sticker (works in FL, GA, and NC only) which they are free, Uni original (white)/Uni Black portable that blends windshield ($14.95 plus tax, works where E-ZPass is accepted including FL, GA, and NC), or CollegePass sticker ($18.50 plus tax, works the same way as the normal free sticker in FL, GA, and NC). I chose the E-PASS Uni - Black transporter option because I can pay at Orlando International Airport parking lot whenever I go there for vacation or use as a backup in case of E-ZPass Massachusetts goes wrong and use it for rental car. I didn't go for SunPass (issued by FDOT division of FTE) because they had billing issues and complaints.

    Be careful using two transponders that work on the same network. If both are in your car at the same time, you could be charged twice if the toll reader reads both transponders. This was the reason I removed my EZ-Tag from my windshield when I got the TollTag, as both transponders would work on every toll gate in Texas.

    I presume that this very long post is if you were in charge of designing I-610 to modern standards, this is what you would propose. I can see you have taken a lot of time to think this out and, frankly for me, it's a bit hard to envision without actually drawing it out, because there is so much information here. I presume when you talk about lane counts, it's the number of primary lanes in each direction. I'll look for some time in the next week and I'll take your information and map it to the existing road. That should show me your idea. As for underground express, Episode 30 (I-635 in Dallas Texas) shows the LBJ Texpress Lanes, which are literally express lanes laid out in a trench between I-635. It looks impressive, but I can tell you it took about five years to build it and the costs were rather high. In the case of Dallas, private firms and the NTTA paid for those express lanes. Here in Houston, it will likely be TxDOT, possibly some private firms, and METRO paying for those express lanes (they might get HCTRA to help pay for them like they did with the Katy Managed Lanes, also known as the Katy Tollway, but other areas such as US-290, I-69/US-59 (both sides), I-45 (both sides), and SH-288 (TxDOT paid for the Harris County side while Brazoria County Toll Road Authority (BCTRA) paid for the Brazoria County side) HCTRA didn't contribute. In fact, HCTRA had a chance to build the SH-288 Express Lanes in Harris County, but they refused. I do know that HCTRA did dump some funds into a design plan for the Hempstead Managed Lanes project (also known as Hempstead Tollway). This project is separate from the US290 Express Lanes as it is an elevated structure following an abandoned railroad right-of-way from Cypress to I-610 in Houston. It would run mostly parallel with US290. This project is on indefinitely hold...it may be build, but I seriously doubt it. I think we'll end up with a complete SH-99 Grand Parkway before the Hempstead Tollway is built.

    @@user-wf6oc3fe6s Calimanci, you say? My wife used to have a calimanci tree in the backyard, along with a guava tree. Both used to produce fruit, but they were the unfortunately victims of the February 2021 deep freeze event. She also had a sizable a Chinese okra plant that also got hit in that freeze. The next video that I'll release today is the President George Bush Turnpike in Dallas. The next one I had planned is the Dallas North Tollway, but I can switch to the video of I-10 between SH-99 in Katy to SH-99 near Baytown, as that is the last freeway video that I haven't released for Houston.

    It's to encourage people to use the Express Lanes (so they can collect tolls). They don't do that here in Houston (although the Express Lanes at one time were 70mph while the main lanes were 65mph, but that was "corrected".

    Great drive and first! Did you know South Korea uses similar numbering system used by US Interstate but with differences for their expressways? Here's numbering rules for the expressways in South Korea: -Major routes are designated with two-digit numbers with north-south route with the odd number and east-west with the even number. Primary route ends in 0 or 5 while a secondary route ends in other digits. The exception to this rule is Route 1 Gyeongbu Expressway because it is first and most important expressway. -Branch routes has three-digit number where the first two number matches the parent route as opposed to US Interstate where the last two number matches parent route. For example, the Route 102 Namhae Expressway Branch 1 is branch of Route 10 Namhae Expressway. This can be either be a bypass or spur. -Ring expressways has a three-digit number where the first digit matches the postal code (equivalent to ZIP Code in the US). For example, the Route 100 Capital Region First Ring Expressway around Seoul comes from postal code 01XXX for that city. This differs from US Interstate where the first digit that has even number where it is bypass and ring roads. -Route 70-99 is not used. Reversed for designations in the event of Korean reunification (which it won't happen anytime soon).

    I didn't know that at all. Good to know. Did you know that the US Highway numbering system (these are the ones with the black and white shields as oppose to the red, white and blue shields) have a numbering system that is opposite of the Interstate highway system: Routes are numbered with the last number being an even number if it was an east-west route and odd if it is a north-south route (same as Interstate highways). They are ordered from lowest to highest from east to west and north to south (as opposed to Interstate highways that are numbered from west to east and south to north). Three digit highways are suppose to be similar to that of the Interstate Highway system, odd first digit is a spur-like route that does not return to its parent route and even routes do return to the parent route. Suffix routes are more common on US Highways than on Interstate highways. Interstate highway system has the following suffix routes: The exception to this route is US-101, which is not a spur route of US-1 (US-101 is on the west coast while US-1 is on the east coast, some 3,000+ miles apart.) According to the AASHTO, US-101 is actually "Route 10-1" and is actually identified as a two-digit route (poor number planning on AASHTO as US-99 is too far inland) I-35E and I-35W in Dallas/Fort Worth and Minneapolis/St. Paul I-480N in Cleveland Ohio I-69E, I-69C, I-69W in Texas These are the suffix US highways: US-6N - Pennsylvania US-9W - New York to New Jersey US-11E / US-11W - Tennessee to Virginia US-19E / US-19W - North Carolina to Tennessee US-25E / US-25W - Tennessee to Kentucky US-31E / US-31W - Tennessee to Kentucky US-45E / US-45W - Tennessee US-49E / US-49W - Mississippi US-70N - Lebanon, Tennessee = Crossville, Tennessee US-70S - Pegram, Tennessee - Sparta, Tennessee There is also no I-50 and I-60 as AASHTO was concerned that the numbering would cause confusion in states where there would be an I-50 and a US-50 (and I-60 and US-60). However, this rule didn't hold well (future I-69 will cross US-69 in Texas and, even worse, I-41 would be concurrent with US-41 in Wisconsin.
