Drive Tour Episode 32: When Toll Roads Were...Starting? (Dallas North Tollway - Dallas TX)

Welcome to Episode 32 of Drive Tour. This episode will focus on the Dallas North Tollway located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in Texas, the oldest active toll road in Texas (key work is active, as it's not the oldest...that honor belongs to the Dallas-Fort Worth Turnpike, which was covered in Drive Tour Episode 29).
Our tour starts at the interchange with US-380 and ends just after the I-35E / Harry Hines Blvd split. It's a nice toll road, rather quaint in its design, especially in the section between I-35E and I-635.
As always, thanks goes out to Storyblocks (www.storyblocks.com), Artlist (artlist.io), Epidemic Soun (www.epidemicsound.com), and now Amazon Music (www.amazon.com/music) for the music on this program. Another shoutout goes to Storyblocks for supplying some of the graphics used today.

great video, remember the north dallas north tollway extension turns cashless in late 2010, all ntta toll roads are the same date as the north extension they have to close cash collection to protect traffic on all ntta toll roads. just like from the rayburn tollway to i-35e are built without cash collection

Correct. Both NTTA and TxDOT went cashless around the same time (I believe NTTA was first, then TxDOT). HCTRA was the last holdout as they were still collecting tolls through a cash option until COVID hit. Most of their toll roads were already converted to all electronics with the exception of the Sam Houston Tollway (their cash cow). Sam Houston Tollway also the only facility in the HCTRA network of toll roads that has a pay-by-mail option. The others do not allow pay-by-mail. The only sections without a pay-by-mail option is the northeast section (that was built as all electronic as a start) and the Sam Houston Tollway Ship Channel Bridge (as that was converted to all electronic prior to COVID).

@@ki5aok yeah, all toll plazas already turned ez tag only because the people merged in the non-tag lane is dangerous. they install the new gantry system in fall 2024 so they can turn all-electronic gantry.

@@WeatherAirCtrl672 So they finally got moving on that electronic gantry project. According to the last update I got from HCTRA (which was a few months ago), they were looking for someone who could do it in a short time frame and was submitting bids for it. They had talked for a long time on going all electronic, and they did convert Hardy Toll Road to all electronic before Grand Parkway Segment G opened. All the other roads were either already all electronic (i.e. Westpark) or they had already converted it (i.e. Fort Bend). Sam Houston Tollway was the last one.

@@ki5aokOklahoma and Kansas are converting to cashless and should be finished by late 2024 or early 2025. Meanwhile, the Central Expressway Expressway Authority is the only agency in Florida that is not cashless. On their main toll plaza, you have the option to pay exact change, change provided, pay-by-mail (for higher cost than cash), or E-PASS/SunPass/E-ZPass.

@@RoadsOfAsiaBen I thought Oklahoma and Kansas would've been completely cashless by now.

Great drive! Do you problems with your toll tag(s) where it is not read and they sent you invoice/violation mail? I had this happened occasionally when I use E-ZPass, even my license plate is correct so I had to call the toll agency to correct it.

It happens occasionally...more so with the EZ-TAG when I'm trying to use it on Grand Parkway (which is TxTag). This improved greatly when I switched over to TollTag (NTTA). Seems like HCTRA and TxDOT don't get along very well. I used to get violation notices from TxDOT because Grand Parkway was not a pay-by-plate system (unlike the other TxDOT toll facilities that were). I think that stemmed from the fact that HCTRA was suppose to manage the tolling part, and HCTRA doesn't do pay-by-plate (at least, not until COVID hit...but that will likely change back once the new toll gantries on the Sam Houston Tollway are opened later this year. However, either HCTRA didn't manage it from the start or dropped when COVID hit, because Grand Parkway (at least the TxDOT segments) do pay-by-plate. If it happens now, I get an invoice from TxTag stating I owe them money. No violations anymore. I remember the one at Morton Ranch Road and 99 Toll. They sent an invoice to me for three tag crossings in a row. Something was wrong with that reader (likely malfunctioning and needed a software reset).
