    I had a patron at the library I work at just bring one of these in - all rusty in terrible condition with a cracked case - asking if she could donate it to our branch. We're not supposed to say no to donations (though we do inform people that if we can't use it, it usually ends up in the trash). So against my better judgement, I just took it home. idk what I'm going to do with it - I can't afford to pay someone to restore it. But maybe I can clean it up. I turned the crank and poked all the switches and everything moves perfectly fine despite the rust, so I imagine it's restorable to some extent.

    @@tksewingmachineandrepair4243 Yeah I'll give it a go. Since the mechanical parts still seem to move well enough, I bet just cleaning the rusted components and oiling it up good will be enough to get it sewing stitches. I'm more worried about the electronics. I don't think I want to deal with that at all, so maybe if it makes stitches just from hand cranking it, I can look into modifying it with a handle and making it a hand crank machine. I'm also going to need parts. The person who brought it in said it was just missing the cord, but it is missing a lot more than that. Bobbin case, feet, slide plate, and spool pin are the immediate obvious things missing. But it seems like finding parts shouldn't be hard. There seems to be a lot of them out there.

    When winding a bobbin, you loosen the stop motion wheel with the right hand, place thread on the spool pin and take the thread to the left between the tension discs on the top of the machine then over to the bobbin winder passing alongside a post that helps control the thread. Then through one of the four holes in the top of bobbin. Position the bobbin on the winder spindle and engage the latch by pressing against the bobbin. Hold the thread end to start winding. ( Hold tight until thread breaks ) Activate machine with foot controller. The full bobbin will automatically release. Tighten stop motion wheel. Cut thread. It will wind perfectly on the bobbin when you use the tension discs.

    I just got one of these Singer 15 clones (I think it is a 15-88 clone) off Craig's List. It was branded as a Grand Sewing Machine on a really cheap and shabby formica cabinet and flimsy cast iron treadle. I just threw the cabinet away and will probably discard the treadle. I looked forever for information about Grand Sewing Machines but came up empty until I came across your KZread. I have not yet had time to fully explore the machine but it looks exactly like the one in your video and appears to be top quality. Thanks.

    Make sure you are using a universal needle. And that it is inserted correctly. The flat needs to go towards the bobbin case. So if the bobbin insert from the front, the flat goes to the back.

    The modern class 15 bobbins (despite the name lol) do not work particularly well with the 15-91 machine in my experience. You need the solid metal version that they used to make standard for 15s without the holes on the outer wheel. The modern version dose not work well with this machine because the little groove it is supposed to slot into and spin the bobbin while winding is not deep enough and it just ends up slipping and spinning without the bobbin. It is also not the right fit and gives to much play for the bobbin to move around on the shaft making it difficult to fit the bobbin properly. I struggled with the modern 15 bobbin for a while before figuring that out. Now it works like a charm with the orginal design of the class 15 bobbin. They are easy to find too you dont need an actual vintage model they still make brand new ones. 😊

    I have exact machine and I love it. However, the Mercury foot pedal just began not working when depressing it, if I give hand wheel a push then it sews fast. I opened foot pedal and it looks fine. No carbon build up, put back together and it’s worse. I want to replace it. Should I go with newer electronic pedal? I’ve replaced my singer 15 with newer “electronic” pedal (new from Amazon) and it works fine. Thank you.

  • @tksewingmachineandrepair4243
    @tksewingmachineandrepair42433 ай бұрын

    There are a couple of different types of vintage foot pedals. If it is the one with the carbon disks, there is really not an easy way to rehabilitate that type of pedal. If it is the kind with the wire springs looped around the contacts, I have had varying success with those. You can use just about any foot pedal you can get your hands on. If you prefer a vintage pedal, I do have some for sale. You would have to disconnect or cut the wire from your pedal, then rewire. Personally, I prefer the metal pedals over the plastic ones. Only for their weight. They dont slip around the floor as easy.

    Thanks! Was looking for a solution for my antique handcrank Singer. Clutch won't tighten all the way. Probably got the washer in the wrong position when I put it all back together after cleaning. Will try this to see if it's the problem. Handcrank sews great until it comes to four layers of poly/cotton mix sheet material (like where double seams overlap). It should be able to sew right through--these machines are tanks!

It gives the choice of either 360, which is blurry, or 1080, which I don't have the internet speed for and so the video just freezes. The 720 allows the video to be seen clearly without the problem of freezing. Thank you!
