Andy and Sarah Mandarin

Andy and Sarah Mandarin

Hi everyone,

We are Andy and Sarah, both majored in teaching Chinese as a second language and have been teaching Chinese since 2009.

We co-founded a Chinese school in mainland China in 2013 and had to close it due to COVID-19 in 2020. As two headteachers, we both have over 20k-hour Chinese teaching experience and are passionate about exploring new methodologies to make learning Chinese an easy and enjoyable experience.

With our unique Chinese learning tips and tricks, thousands of our students have learned Mandarin effectively & fast and passed HSK exams at all levels in months or weeks instead of years.

Hi Andy/Sarah, great content and presentation.👍 I would like to ask a different scenario? If it’s the Chinese person who is the “foreigner”, for eg. In Australia. After confirming the person is Chinese, what’s the correct way to follow up, by asking what city/province they’re from…in mandarin of course? Authentic way, to impress?😊 Ni sh nă li rén? 你是哪里人? sorry about the missing tone marks.

My Chinese wife has told me that ni Hao MA?, Is the correct way to ask.. How are you? I've traveled around China for years with her. It's how I greet her family and friends. Usually, I say hello (ni Hao) and then how are you (ni Hao MA?). It's totally appropriate. So keep asking Ni Hao MA?... They will gladly answer.. Wo hen hao..

Great technic to help knowing how the words work vs an English sentence. My wife is Chinese and speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese but she is no teacher. I crack her up as I repeat what she says when she talks on the phone with her sister. I have no idea what she is saying but I am just trying to say the words correctly with some accent as well. I have been with my wife for 34 yrs and my Cantonese skill is pathetic.

Great lesson, thank you very much. Quick question about Ni chi guo le ma? I have seen this sentence before and wondered why we both need the experimental suffix "guo" and the "completion suffix" le as well. To me the meaning comes across as "Have you ever eaten?" LOL. But what do I know? That is why I am asking you, Dear Andy.
