Welcome to madFame!

I love synths, I collect them, fix them, play them and make videos about them.

On this channel, you will learn the easiest, fastest way to program FM synths. I also will share in-depth synth demos and short feature videos on synths old and new.

Thanks for watching :)

    3:48 Love that snapple cap rimshot! It's a lot cleaner than the Mini Pops or CR-78 rimshot. I love the look of the thing with that big knob like it's an '80s microwave or washing machine or something. And I love those '70s cash register buttons kinda like the start/stop and tap buttons on the 808. But I don't really wanna mod the hell out of one just to sync with things. I'd rather just use the CR-78 kit on my TR-6S or Orbit 3 ROM. But there are a few things it could work really well with, like a KO2 or a Volca - but not the 1st gen Volcas that can't be set to 4 ppqn. A Volca Nubass would work. I just don't think it's awesome enough to make it the master clock of a setup. But the real reason I don't have one is that every time I see one under $300 it's beat to hell. 😂

    do you (or anybody) have a written ref for this rtype of analysing fm? this technique of naming what operators do in an algorythme is really interesting, i feel like this might be comming from some document (yam's dx book maybe? i have regen and a dx 27. the dx is a 4op, and regen doesnt use the same type of configuration, allthough imo there isnt any type of sound a dx can do that a synclavier couldnt, reverse isnt true, but that's because of other synthesis types available... very intersting the way you explain this, please give ius a link toi the book if there is one...

    I tried this but in the triangle wave, with Dexed, the 1:2 ratio just creates a square wave. 1:1 did create a triangle. Not sure what's up with that.

    Very interesting to see that both revisions have a SCREW above the VCA diagram. I'm sure you opened both synths to verify that indeed they are as you say. I know it is impossible to determine which filter each synth comes with unless you take an inside look. Great vid !!! THANKS :)

    The Polys had a bit of a bad rep as a kind of thin sounding cheap keyboard. The problem wasn't the device imho, it was just the crappy patches. I spent a *lot* of time reprograming mine, and had a bunch of seriously fat sounding things that I used *extensively* in my band. I'd also couple it with some guitar pedals , a chorus (its own chorus was terrible) and an overdrive pedal for some gritty bite. If i'm brutally honest, it wasnt a great synth, but with a bit of creativity , it was more than capable of being a useful rock and roll synth. Apparently these are popular targets for circuit benders and modders due to the cheapness you can find them second hand, and some of the mods turn them into actually great synths. I think I might even have mine sitting in my dads shed somewhere. I should ask the old boy if he could find it for me next time I visit.

    Major boast "This is the BEST video on..." is validated by the clear and concise advice 1.) Treat the carrier ADSR as AMP ADSR, separating the modulators as overtone generators and 2.) something I'd never heard before but: after your ADSR values are set, focus on the decay rates for most sound design. Those two bits of advice make SO MUCH sense after having struggled for so long to get the sounds I want out of FM synths... and yes, they only make sense if they follow the Yamaha envelope model (decay rates don't exist on the opsix for example.)

    What does the detune do? In terms of actual frequency

  • @madFame
    @madFame3 ай бұрын

    Frequency (Coarse and Fine) is programmed in numerical stepped values, which don't always produce oscillator frequencies that are in tune with other oscillators. According to the DX7 manual, Detune further adjusts the combined Coarse and Fine frequency values by +7 or -7. These numbers are arbitrary in practice, what Detune really does is refine any tuning discrepancies (if any) between oscillators, so they can all be perfectly in tune.

    I know a person who was on sound development of some of the stock patches that launched with the DX-7. Some of the most infamous sounds he developed was the bass sound used in Danger Zone. When he was brought in to demo early units, he absolutely hated the stock bass sounds, so he reworked them. He now has a propensity to hoard DX7's he has about 50 units, about 30 are funtioning with some variation of maintenance required, so he won't sell them unless they all are functioning.

    Hey Mad Fame! I just got into FM synthesis by discovering a DX7 emulator VST called Dexed (maybe I will own a real DX7 someday). Even though the software interface is very different (and intimidating), your videos are really helping me understand how to navigate the basic principles even without a real DX7 to play with! Thank you for doing such a great job, and for opening doors for so many people!

    hey man, just wanted to say thank you for all your dx7 patch vids. I recently picked up a sonicware xfm and alot of them translate well. Am really curious about the operator lfo trick. It seems like (on the xfm at least) it makes more sense if the "lfo" is the modulator rather than the carrier. then increasing the level of the modulator increases the depth of the lfo effect. When the carrier operates as the lfo, you can't increase depth without increasing volume. Is that just a hardware quirk between the 2 devices? Btw, you should reach out to soniceware and mention this post. They may add you to their subscribed channels and increase your views from xfm users.
