    It’s personal. Black women are expected to be subservient and social in corporate America. We’re expected to run up after our white coworkers even if they’re disrespectful to us. If our manager is a non black woman forget it they have a bias toward their own. They will look out for their own before they look out for you. Ex. They will know a black woman is dealing with disrespect from non black coworkers and single the black woman out if she has a backbone and retaliates or even worse if the black woman just doesn’t fool with them anymore the manager will say she’s not a team player. You’re expected to “bond” with people who openly show they hate you and they get away with it and we don’t. It’s pure good ole fashioned racism. And when we do act social it’s too black or too ghetto and they act like they’ve never been around black people or ignore you in conversations like you aren’t there. Sorrry corporate America was not meant for black people heck, it wasn’t meant for white women…the only reason we are there is for LABOR. If you become successful it’s because you worked hard and got through but they don’t like it. It’s not that whites don’t trust us they want to get intel to bring you down and it’s about control.

    Sherri, if you work closely with someone that you support and they deliberately don't say "good morning" when they enter the room, ie. their office, what is that called besides rude? And, when you say "good morning" to the person and they don't respond, what is that about?

  • @BCWNetwork
    @BCWNetwork Жыл бұрын

    It's rude not to respond, but take it with a grain of salt and not allow their attitude to impact what you are trying to accomplish at work.

    Thanks Sherri & Makeda! This video was great! Doing a mid-year or a 1:1 with their manager is key b4 your performance review too. But, definitely document all your significant contributions throughout the year so you can bring to your manager's attention all that you have done. Definitely, be your own advocate! ❤

    Imposter syndrome, I come to learn occurs when you observe others too much, highlighting their strengths without doing the same for you. But it can also be manipulated as well as insecurity by others' micro or passive aggressive words and behaviour

    Excellent video, I work as a scientist in the lab, but it's also business related (technically corporate) and I can attest to all the issues relating to the glass ceiling, manager representation, and how we are treated versus literally anyone else. I helped form an African American Employee Resource Group at my job and so far it's helping a lot of other black people and women who though they were alone at their location in their struggle. I am also reading a book called 'our separate ways' by Ella Bell and Stella Nkomo. I highly recommend.

    I’m experiencing this as well in the same industry, but as a project manager. I’m finding that I’m internalizing these disparities in treatment, and it’s impacting my confidence/self-esteem. In turn, my work performance is waning as I am double-minded, never wholly present in the moment because I always have a second set of thoughts about my race/gender going in the back of my mind.

    I’ve had a Supervisor tell me my natural hair would look great if it were straightened. I’ve also had an adult touch my hair without permission and other adults I was able to prevent from touching my hair. Eventually I began to think about straightening my hair. Leaving that environment was beneficial to my health.

    My thought is, when it comes to truly difficult people at work, if you share information about yourself, it will be used against you. If you don't share, they'll make something up to use against you, and the social power of some of these people is something else. Share and get involved if you wish, but don't expect to receive the sense of security one might think it will give you. Workplace bullying and mobbing are on the rise and because there's no protection, it shows no signs of stopping. Be careful putting your all into a job. It's easy to lose everything. Most people are probably better off networking outside of work.

    I just don't talk about my personal life in the workplace. At all. I pretty much keep to myself because of the dynamics of the office. Team lead is the spy for the supervisor and people gossips. So because of that, I feel the need to be closed off to people. People have been proven to be snakes in the workplace. So it's very hard for me to let people in.

    I have gained respect in my company using my manners!! Working with white people in today’s world that has gotten me along way!! They have a great deal of respect for me and they expect my culture differences just based off the fact that I respect all elders and use manners
