Very nice, excited to hear the whole thing! I may have asked this before, but what was behind the choice of using a pure gut G string? Are there any sources that indicate that this was common usage in Saxony at the time? The "dry" sound of it is quite refreshing.
Hi Joannes, thank you! I am sorry for the delay. A Beethoven marathon concert - all his piano/'cello sonatas in one concert - has kept me busy but I am happy to come back to you now. Good question and we might have touched the subject already before. I still want to - have to! - find out more about '...common usage in Saxony..'. But a few thoughts for as far as I am now: as you of course know, things were not so standardized in those days as it is now or as we might think it always has been. I guess that with the development of covered lower strings - C/Bflat and also the G? I don't know now - in Northern Italy in the 17th century, it was not common good custom everywhere. I actually even remember when I studied in the USA, a fellow student of mine had played on uncovered gut lower 'cello strings in his youth. And don't be mistaken, I am not 95 years old. I found it quite remarkable for those days (1990ies). Another thing, a luthier once gave me an old pre-second world war D-string. It was the best string I ever had and thicker than we usually see on period on non-period instruments. Of course for more or less 440 Herz. I still fear that gut string making had reached a higher peak than today. Furthermore, I think a sound or interpretation becomes cleaner and more beautiful/refined and more intellectual the farther away it is from the source or original moment. You hear this already when you compare Rostropovich first rendition of Shostakovich and the way young 'cellist play it now as a standard piece. So also Beethoven must have sounded so different from what we do now. And the same for even earlier music. In general I think the sound was rougher, less polished than the standard baroque sound of today's recording industry. Also, think of a hobo with the real original style reeds sounding much more like a shawm, or the trumpet without holes. For me it is the challenge to define a new beauty within that much rougher general sound picture. This uncovered G-string, which was used of course, as well as the lower tuning are some of the parts of that story and challenge. But nevertheless, the search goes on!
