Hey guys, if half of your squad are missing do you think that squad rotation should be postponed and vacated spots be filled by other squads with similar problems.I had to shoot 5 stand at nationals with myself and one other guy and had no clue of target presentations once we started to rotate through the stands. It’s a horrible position to be in. Thanks

I shot USPSA pistol through the 80s and 90s. I had to earn a slot to attend the National Championship at my local club which would get a couple of slots based on attendance through the year, or at an Area Championship which had slots for the top positions overall and top shooters through the classes. In those days the nationals could only have 500 to 600 shooters.

I wish I had learned to trust the process and patience as I grew and continue to grow in the sport. Also, I would have invested more time and money for a coach, to learn not only to be a good shooter but a good competitor. So many great points I agree 100% about the shells, I was guilty too.

Interesting change of shows. It brought out some thoughts of my own. I had punch fever, used shells that bruised my shoulder, listened too much to my friends and avoided larger events. A couple more of my own. Read clay books earlier. Check out KZread videos earlier. A comment on coaches. If I had a coach earlier I think by now I would have found a Level III. Difference in skill training. Thanks to all of you for your work for the sport.

Unless and until you can get televised sporting clays competitions, with the type of cameras and expertise used in golf, there won't be big purses in clays. With shot tracking technology, super slow motion etc it is possible. But you can't have people pitching a fit, throwing shells and using profane language when they miss. There needs to be a code of conduct, a dress code, and some standardization in the flow of a tournament.

I heard the talk of the shoot-offs and stuff. My home club in Ione California has a special shoot-off 5-stand that has spectator seating, neon green targets that are easy to see and splash with color good when broken, and very tough targets with varying range and speeds (it’s on the side of the hill so the target setter gets really creative with terrain). Some of the shoots the club holds that use more than one of its 3 courses have a special Top Gun award where the top score of each course face off at the shoot-off 5 stand and the seats are always packed every time it’s quality entertainment

As a C class shooter, I had a totally different experience than you guys are describing. I've been to tournaments that threw "unfair" targets with simple distance, speed, and light on "separator stations" that felt like luck and not skill. That was not my experience at SE Regionals. I feel like I had a shot at every target, I just didn't technically execute on it and missed (and I missed a lot). Most of the stations, I had a chance to learn from my mistakes and correct on the 3rd or 4th pair. I left knowing what i needed to work on to be a better shooter. That, to me, is far more valuable than a number on a score card. I've got a long way to go in this sport and I feel like this tournament helped me more than any other.

  • @Clay-Sport

I went to the SE Regional. I am somehow in A class but realistically a B or C class shooter. I usually shoot 75ish percent at larger shoots. I shot 56 percent there. I am normally 20 targets below the pros, not 30 or 40. Some of the problem was the wind making some tough targets near impossible for someone like me. I enjoyed everything about the weekend except the targets. I have registered for two more regionals and the World Championship this year, but I am strongly considering cancelling those as I just may not be ready for that level of difficulty. If others with my skill level feel the same way, big shoot attendance will drop way off. That hurts the club, the sport and the shooter. I think part of the fun is to shoot the same targets as the pros and see how you measure up, but this was too much in my opinion. Let the big guys shoot a hundred straight and let the shoot-off be the separators and encourage spectators for those shoot-offs.

You know you described me to a T. I’ve ended up in A because Im a decent Fitasc shooter. Never done any good in Sporting. I end up shooting at big tournaments and regionals almost exclusively because I shoot with my son and thats where he wants and needs to shoot. I get frustrated at times because of never being able to shoot a good score. I have however found that even though I never shoot a good score I have gotten better. Shooters that used to beat me up tremendously aren’t beating me up so much now. I agree with these guys you need to set the courses to let the decent shooter get a decent score. Last year they set the Western Regional easy - they all complained it was too easy. This one they complain is too hard. Everyone shoots the same targets so in reality it doesnt matter how hard they are but it does take a certain minimum score /number broken for it to be fun. People don’t do this to go home depressed it aught to be fun. The really newbies need to break a few and have fun. I help coach a school team and we struggle to get the kids motivated because they get beat up so bad at the competitions.

I feel like this only applies to people in A class or higher. I’m C class shooting mid 80s that is going to state championships and I plan to go to some big blast stuff and I plan on going to Nationals next year because in my class maybe I can pull something off but I invite the challenge and also the experience of an event like a Florida swing shoot or Nationals

I shoot consistent 70's. Im still learning. Still trying to improve. I'm poor, lol so I do what I can. But me and some guys shot at snake creek over the weekend in Oklahoma. They had 3 stands in a row. That were stupid hard. It kicked our butts. But even still I shot a 65. I was happy with that considering how hard those were. But in the end, it makes me and the guys I shoot with. Want to try harder, And try to get better. Of course I don't have that " I'm a bad ass in my own pond" ego or mentality. I always try to learn something from every time we shoot. All I can say about this is... do better!

Interesting discussion. I'm pretty new to this sport. I've shot pistol competitively for years (IDPA/USPSA) and they also have "classifications", but the shotgun stuff is relatively new. What always strikes me as odd is people getting excited for winning in a lower class. To me, I never cared where I finished in relation to anyone else but the guy that won the event (maybe the top 3-4). What am I missing? Also, if I choose to go to a big shoot, I expect to be humbled. What other sport can you go and play on the same exact course as the best in the world... on the same day... ? But... I also get people who don't want to go to a shoot where they can't hit anything. Maybe the marketing needs to be different... Maybe it needs to be sold as "see where you stack up against the best". Again... just some thoughts from a random newbie...

Excellent content, trying to decode many concerning topics, with various ideologies from different geographic expertise. However, we need to fully understand that target setting for "main event sporting clays courses", is primarily meant to be shot with a Multi Choked 12 Gauge Shotgun utilizing a maximum load of " 1 1/8 oz.". of 9 -7.5 shot. With the combination of the above, the Sporting Clays Shooter/Competitor, is almost always equipped to break a target consistently with his equipment of choice, from 10 yards out to a good 60 yards. Personally, I want to enjoy the performance of my over priced equipment to the fullest from 10 to 60 yards with out getting summonsed, or being down played by continuous cry- babies. Basically, I want to enjoy my Ferrari going 200 miles an hour, for 2 hours and burn every ounce of the fuel in my tank. If I don't like "far/difficult targets", then I need to consider shooting/competing in the sub gauge events. The level of difficulty or not, regarding Target Setting and Score Performance, varies primarily on a shooter's expertise, physical - mental ability, plus 100 other variables and quirks that are too many too list. We seem to forget that the " Score " is the end result not the process, where as, we are continuously being taught to focus on the " Process" and not the " End Result/Score". Sporting Clays is not a " Static Game" with specific target setting rules, such as Skeet and Trap. Even in Skeet and Especially in Trap, you will come across of the most unhappy, complaining, moaning and groaning competitive shooters, who nag about every little thing, that needs to be changed because it has screwed their scores. Travelling from State to State to compete in various events, it is a personal choice and has different meaning for every individual competitive shooter, regardless Classification and Event Type. We are not all the same, and we all come from different geographic backgrounds. Personally, I love travelling from the Northeast down South and shooting various events, regardless the level of target setting difficulty /score performance. Every club and every event has its own flavor and vibe. People are people and at the end of the day, people are always trying to to do the best they can, whether professional or not. Competitive Sporting Clays Shooting is a personal choice, period.

I'm an active-duty Law Enforcement officer myself, I live in the New Jersey area and shoot at M&M and Cedar Creek often. I have friends who absolutely will not go to Jersey with a firearm of any type because of the Jersey gun laws. I guess Jersey is New York lite when it comes to gun laws. Great episode, and super informative. I find that shipping whether for repairs or other reasons has gotten more and more difficult with the various carriers.

I don't think it will affect the Master class pot negatively by reducing the number of Master Class shooters. I know I do not buy any options at big shoots because I have little chance of winning. Being down classed gives me the opportunity to win again, and I will buy options. I believe more people will buy options with the downclass introduction because they are put in a class that they can compete in. I am excited to hear there will be a Pro Class. I would be more inclined to buy options in Master class, knowing that I will not be competing against the Pros. I have faith that over the next 5 years and through refinement of the Classification system, a more fair system will come of it. Thanks Mark for explaining this. Thanks Jason and Sean.
