I've always felt that the way the last verse repeats the first is so poignant. We hear how Spencer struggles and feels the need to escape, yet guilt brings him back home. He gets great pleasure from returning, and similarly everyone get great pleasure from his return. He's content now, and believes he'll never leave again. However, the original verse comes back around. Spencer is reduced once again. Nothing is solved.

Had a fight in an airport bar with John Martyn in '92. He told me he was a Freemason and I called it the mafia of the mediocre. Anyway still love his music. Had a big influence on my songwriting and performance. Click the profile and have a listen.

You're not attracted to sad music unless you have a sad soul. Some people have just melancholy in them and it helps their creativity. There is a sadness in Rory all too evident to see; not just here but even in younger moments. He spoke of the place where you can find company if you want it and stay away from company if you don't want it. Never married, probably only 'lived' on stage. But I think he had an understanding too that the stage wasn't a healthy life. To see him here losing the fight in many ways, (health and hope) it reminds me of Elvis who also loved gospel blues, sad music. Both in their 40s when mortality began to strongly knock on their door. Both absolutely aware of what ill health was doing to their looks and their ability to perform with the energy they needed. Some will say Elvis was self destructive but he wasn't alone. Blues/Rock is full of self destructive personalities. It's the kind of people the music attracts, and it is in turn the music such people create. One feeds on the other.

Never was one for lyrics ( more of a McCartney guy than Lennon)….i really listened to his tone and lyrics …..blew my mind. I think John is one of the few artists that hits you in the ears, gut and heart. Pure angst, pain and honesty.

A live rendition of "One Day Without You" (recorded in 1978) by British singer-songwriter and guitarist John Martyn (1948 - 2009), a song which first appeared as track 1 on the album "Sunday's Child", released in 1975 on the Island Records label. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lJmcmclved2ahso.htmlsi=tyhtN7I-155CZMRk Lyrics: One day without you And I feel just like I’m somebody else One day without you And there’s a fear there might be somebody else. You know that I’d like to keep you Keep you to myself, and by my side You know I’d like to keep you Just like I know it’s wrong to try Just like my babies were born to cry Every bird that sings is born to fly. One day without you And I feel just like some lost ship at sea One day without you And every friend I meet seems strange to me. You know that I’d like to keep you Keep you to myself, by my side You know that I like to keep you Just like I know it’s wrong to try Just like my babies were born to cry Every bird that sings is born to fly. One day without you I feel a hole just where my heart should be One day without you And I feel just how sad my life could be. You know I’d like to keep you Keep you to myself, keep you by my side You know I like to keep you Just like I know it’s wrong to try Just like my babies were born to cry Every bird that sings deserves to fly John Martyn - One day without you (1978)

I don;t know John Martyn's story at all but in these videos I see a man bursting with creativity and love. If he had any struggle at all it was likely how to release all the beauty he saw into the world.

I could be wrong, but wonder if the lack of a response (or at least I couldn't hear one) about his remark regarding The National Front triggered the yawn that followed. John was so feckn smart, funny, and fast, that it seems like sometimes his audiences didn't get the jokes. Even when he was so out of it that he was barely intelligible, even then you could sometimes pick out the diamonds amidst the coal. ❤☮🌎
