    Listening to this, the echoplex piece at the end, I could still be there, sat on the Uni hall floor, pint of Mitchells in a plastic glass, a joint, MJ smoke all over completely surrounding John. The place completely quiet, *everyone* totally transported by this music, maybe to the same place everyone is when they listen to this now. I open my eyes, music stops. Take me back, back to 1975.

    I'm kind of obsessed with John and his performances there's such a mystique to his whole routine, the acoustic guitar pickups and wires often gaffer taped to the top of the guitar, alternate tunings with effects not seen in this era. Just Amazing!

    The mics are AKG C451 condensers with a CK5 capsule screwed onto the end of a VR1 extender tube. The BBC had acquired a large number of these kits from AKG in the early 1970s, and you often see them used on BBC2 music programs of this period.

  • @johnnyhurst3108

    @johnnyhurst3108

    Thank you man - honestly have been searching for what the mics where around this time period for ages - they looked so cheap and flimsy, yet rendered such amazing detail; they were also so unintrusive to the performer. As you can imagine without the knowledge that there is a microphone and extension unit involved, google didn't show anything. The question I was searching for for the best part of 2 years was finally answered 9 years ago!

    @gaspanda I saw this when it was first broadcast in Spring 75 :-) John had just played 'One Day Without You', and is tuning up from the standard tuning pattern four semitones below normal he used for that number. The magic button that 'Bomber Harris' gets to press is the power ON switch of a Maestro PS-1 Phase Shifter wired ahead of the Echoplex EP-3 in the FX loop.

    I've always felt that the way the last verse repeats the first is so poignant. We hear how Spencer struggles and feels the need to escape, yet guilt brings him back home. He gets great pleasure from returning, and similarly everyone get great pleasure from his return. He's content now, and believes he'll never leave again. However, the original verse comes back around. Spencer is reduced once again. Nothing is solved.
